Horse Edition Planned in January

rBulletin

Calendar-

The Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin special winter horse edition is scheduled for Jan. 11, 1989. This issue will include notices for horse shows in January, February and March, as well as notices for horses at stud, boarding facilities and miscellaneous equine equipment. A 30-word limit will be observed for these notices. Deadline for the edition is Dec. 28.
Owners are reminded that notices included in the "horses, ponies and mules for sale" column must be accompanied by a copy of a valid, negative coggins test (made within the past 12 months). Ads submitted without this test will not be published.
In addition, under the new Georgia Animal Protection Act, boarding and breeding facilities must now be licensed. Your license number must be submitted with notices for the "at stud" categories in order for ads to be published. For licensing information and applications, call 404-6563725.
If your organization has a show scheduled for January, February or March, submit your announcement, not to exceed 30 words, by Dec. 28.
Makin' Do
To renew rusty iron railings and prevent them from rusting further, paint them with an oil-base aluminum paint, let them dry and then paint with the preferred color of enamel.
To remove quickly residue left on windows from tape or adhesive paper, rub with warm white vinegar or nail-polish remover. For tough spots, rub with a brush or a nail of nylon net.
For an inexpensive toothbrush protector, use a plastic pill bottle container. Make a hole in the top large enough to accommodate the toothbrush handle. Close the container with the brush part inside.

Post-Holiday Christmas M, Tree Tips

Stockings are empty and ornaments put away, but hold on to that Christmas tree. It can be used well into the new year. Louie F. Dean, senior urban forester with the Georgia Forestry Commission, suggests several uses for discarded Christmas trees:
- Attract birds this winter by providing shelter and food with the tree. Stake or brace the tree near a bird-
feeder to provide a landing and shelter for birds. Roll warm paraffin and birdseed into balls or candle shapes and tie to the stronger limbs
near the trunk. - For use as kindling, cut
limbs into 6-10 inch sections and tie together into small bundles of no more than 3inches in diameter with
heavy-duty twine. (Be careful to use only small bundles since Christmas tree limbs and needles are
highly flammable.) Store additional bundles away from the fireplace.
The tree trunk can be cut into firewood, but for best
results should dry out approximately two months. Never burn an entire Christmas tree at once. Sparks are a fire hazard inside the home and at the top of chimneys.
- Several trees tied together serve as windbreaks

around plants, shrubbery and cold frames. Stake or tie them around leaf or compost piles to hold material in place. Limbs can also be used to cover flower beds or bulb beds or for controlling spring weeds.
- Cut limbs short and fine to use as mulch or add to compost piles. The trunk can be cut and used to stake tomatoes.
- Use Christmas trees to help conserve valuable topsoil. A whole tree or portions of the tree can help prevent soil erosion in gullies. Place the tree with its top uphill to catch, filter and stabilize loose soil from water erosion. On dirt banks, place trees on bank crossings overlapping the ends and stake them down to prevent bank erosion.
~ Improve a favorite fishing hole by tying several
trees together with old cable, wire or nylon rope.
Then, tie on several concrete blocks to weigh the bundle down and sink it in 4 feet or more of water. Be sure the trees are anchored properly. The branches will provide protecetive cover for baby fish or fingerlings. Sink the bundles away from swimming or wading areas or water traffic patterns to prevent entanglements while boating or swimming.
