Food Programs Boon to Farmers
Twenty-two million meals served each day; 107,000 separate dining locations; fifth largest food preparation and serving organization in the country sounds like a mammoth
fast food chain, right? Wrong. It's the National School Lunch Program.
It takes a lot of food to fill lunch trays for kids every school day. And, since one of the most dependable sources for that food is Georgia's farmers, the state's children and farmers both benefit.
Our guest columnist this week is Charles Kirby, regional director, Special Nutrition Programs for USDA's Food and Nutrition Service, Atlanta._______________
For example, during the school year that just ended, the U.S. Department of Agriculture purchased $10.2 million worth of chicken from Georgia producers. Another $5.5 million was spent for Georgia peanut butter; and $4.6 million went to purchase peanuts in the state. These Georgia commodities were then shipped to school districts across the nation.
Add to this total all of the milk and other food commodities purchased locally by school food service organizations in the state and you begin to get an indication of the impact of the school lunch program on Georgia's farmers.
Of course, not all farm products acquired by USDA from Georgia farmers end up on school lunch menus. Other programs also administered by USDA's Food and Nutrition Service likewise benefit from the ability of farmers to produce abundant, high-quality commodities.
For instance, the School Breakfast Program serves more than 3.2 million meals nationwide each day during the school year, and the Special Milk Program delivers 700,000 half-pints of milk to children each day. The Summer Food Service Program and summer camps provide children with 1.5 million meals daily during vacation months. And, the Child Care Program in homes

Beware Phone Sales Of Pesticide Products
Grandpa's
Garden
Those devilish vine borers can be controlled early in squash with weekly applications of rotenone at the plant base. Later on in the season, if you see sawdust piles around the base of the squash plant, then you can dig out the borers with a sharp knife and cover the wounded area with soil.
If you love long-blooming roses during the summer, cut off the blooms as they fade. Look down the stem until you see the first leaf cluster with at least five leaflets, and cut off the bloom a quarter inch above that point.
"It's just as good as Roundup...". If you've heard that phrase lately, especially in an early evening telephone call from a slick-talking salesman, beware. Think twice before sending any money, says Tom Delaney, agricultural manager for entomology and pesticides for the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Companies operating out of telephone boiler rooms are trying to pawn off ineffective or unregistered pesticides on unsuspecting customers, Delaney said.
"They'll tell you what they're selling is just as good as a certain product, such as Roundup," he said. "And at cheaper prices. Many times the product they're selling is not registered in Georgia, or has little active ingredient. And the company won't supply a label for the product if you ask for one."
The operators of these businesses work out of either New York or Florida, and are very difficult to catch, but authorities are focusing their attention on them, Delaney said.
State Tobacco Markets Set to Open July 26
State tobacco markets are scheduled to open July 26, according to Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. The opening was announced upon the recommendation of the Commissioner's tobacco advisory board.
Although final approval must be granted by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Richard Lyng, the USDA historically has concurred with the state's recommendation.
"Despite drought conditions, prospects for Georgia's 1988 tobacco crop look excellent," Irvin said. "Although dry weather may cause a slight reduction in yield per acre, leaf which has received adequate moisture appears to be of good quality."
Following tradition, Irvin will get a firsthand look at Georgia's crop during his annual tobacco tour, scheduled to begin July 26 the proposed opening date.
"Demand for high quality, naturally ripened gold leaf is strong, particularly for the export market," Irvin said. "Tobacco companies have indicated that they will be able to utilize all the good quality Georgia tobacco they can get."
A good rule of thumb is to never buy any type of pesticide without first reading the label, he said. "And if there's any doubt about whether it's registered, please check with us," said Delaney.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's entomology and pesticide division can be reached at 404-6564958.

Q: Is there any way to keep yolks from being off-center when boiling eggs. I make deviled eggs often and the yolks are usually off-center when I cut the eggs in half.
A: You can prevent this problem by stirring the water while the eggs are cooking. If you store eggs with the heavy side up, this will help keep yolks centered also.
Q: My garden is overrun with Japanese beetles. What can I use to control them?
A: Sevin is effective for controlling these pests. It is recommended that you use the liquid instead of the dust because it is safer for bees to use the liquid and bees pollinate the vegetables. Apply in the evening when the bees have retired for the night. Read and follow all label directions carefully.

Food Programs
(Continued from page 1)
and daycare centers serves 2.8 mil lion meals per day.
Federal food assistance programs such as these have been closely linked to American agriculture for more than 50 years. In 1935, the nation's lawmakers directed USDA to remove price-depressing surplus farm products from the market by seeking out domestic uses for food -- uses which would not interfere with commercial marketing channels. At that time, the basic categories for food assistance were also estab lished: schools; nonprofit summer camps for children; charitable insti tutions; and needy families.
Since that time, food assistance programs have guaranteed addi tional domestic markets for locallygrown products and insured a higher degree of market stability for producers. Meanwhile, farm sur pluses have also proved to be a boon for schools, institutions and the needy as commodities purchased for Food and Nutrition Service pro grams provide them with a wide variety of nutritious foods.
Finally, here are figures which highlight the importance of USDA programs to Georgia farmers. In the past seven years, approximately $214.5 million has been spent by the federal government to purchase Georgia farm products for food as sistance programs. This has fluc tuated from a low of $20 million per school year to a high of almost $40
million. Commodities purchased in the state have ranged from blueberries and honey to vegetable oil and beef.
This partnership between Geor gia's farmers and USDA's Food and Nutrition Service is a real success story. Because, not only do growers benefit, but also the nation's chil dren and needy families.
Peaches and Ice Cream
Ingredients: 2 cups sugar; 1 cup water; 2 cups peeled & chopped Georgia peaches; juice of one lemon; 1/2 tea spoon almond extract; one quart vanilla ice cream; sparkling water.
Directions: In a medium saucepan over low heat, mix sugar and water until sugar is dissolved; bring to a boil. Remove from heat and cool. Add peaches, lemon juice and almond extract. Cover and refrigerate. To serve: spoon a little peach syrup into a tall soda glass; drop in a scoop of ice cream. Top with more syrup; fill glass with sparkling water. Top with another scoop of ice cream. Serve with straws and long-handled spoons. Makes 8 servings.
July Celebrations Feature Peaches and Ice Cream
July is Peach Month and Ice Cream Month so combine the best of both to create this mouthwatering recipe for Peachy Ice Cream Sodas (captured in this "delicious" photo).
