Reforestation Vital To Georgia's Future
During the past four years, Georgia landowners have planted more than 1,685,000 acres in trees. That required a lot of seedlings! In fact, the demand has been so great that
the Georgia Forestry Commission this spring established an additional nursery to meet future seedling needs.
Actually the reason for the great surge in seedling demand is twofold; our continuing countyby-county reforestation drive has retained its momentum and the overwhelming results from our participation in the Conservation Reserve Program, a program in which
Our guest columnist this week is John W. Mixon, director, Georgia Forestry Commission, Box 819, Macon 31298.
Georgia landowners have received approval for planting 30 percent of the national total under the act.
The new Flint River nursery near Montezuma is being developed on an 832 acre tract in Dooly County. Approximately 80 acres at the new site have been seeded for harvest this fall and winter and underground irrigation lines have been installed on 230 acres of the new facility.
Governor Harris and the general assembly during the 1987 legislative session appropriated funds for the purchase of the Flint River nursery, which will produce 50 million seedlings this year. A section of the nursery will be used to establish additional slash and loblolly pine seed orchards. The new orchards along with existing seed orchards will enable the Commission to eventually produce all the genetically superior seed needed in its reforestation program.
When combined with the production of nurseries maintained by the Commission near Byron and Reidsville, the Flint River Seedbeds will bring the total to 200 million seedlings annually.
The Commission started accepting seedling orders July 1 for delivery in the fall and winter. Order forms are available at all Commis-

Opening Date Set For Tobacco Market

What does it mean when "Reg. Penna. Dept. Agr." is printed on the

label of a food product?

The phrase designates the company that made the product is

registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and is thereby

able to offer its products for sale in that state. Pennsylvania requires any

company that manufactures food products to be sold in that state,

regardless of where the company is based, to register with the Pennsyl-

vania Department of Agriculture. When a company becomes registered in

Pennsylvania, it agrees to manufacture or prepare its products under

conditions that meet the standards of Pennsylvania's consumer protection

laws. Most companies find it easier to put this information on all their

product labels instead of making separate ones for items going to

Pennsylvania.

I planted some tulips around the end of November and they bloomed really well this spring. When should I dig up these bulbs for replanting next fall?
According to our plant specialist most tulip bulbs only last one or two years in Georgia, then they decline and fail to bloom the second or third year. To insure beautiful tulips, new bulbs should be planted each year. (If you insist on replanting the old bulbs, however, carefully remove them from the soil in early summer after the foilage has died. Store them in a cool, dry place until August, when they need some heat to mature the flower bud. Replant in November.)

Georgia tobacco markets are set to open Tuesday, July 28, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced last week upon the recommendation of his tobacco advisory board.
Final approval for the opening date will come from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Richard Lyng, but historically, the Secretary always follows the states' recommendation. Florida has designated July 29 as opening date for flue-cured tobacco markets there.
Irvin said he will begin his annual tour of tobacco markets on that date and will likely be joined this year by Georgia's junior Senator, Wyche Fowler. Fowler serves on the U.S. Senate's committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
"I am delighted to announce that if Senator Fowler's Washington schedule will permit, he will join me on as much of the tobacco tour as possible," Irvin said. "The Senator has expressed keen interest in

Enjoy Georgia Peaches During Peak of Season

Consumers who look forward to the taste of fresh Georgia peaches will be pleased to find adequate supplies of this nutritious fruit now available at farmers' markets, roadside stands and pick-your-own operations throughout the state.

According to the Georgia Crop reporting Service in Athens, the crop is expected to equal last year's production of 105 million pounds with 87 percent of the crop rated good as of late June.
According to Taylor County Ex-

Peaches have long been a part of Georgia's history, and although the state is no longer ranked first in production, its producers grow some of the finest peaches in the country. Since July is recognized as National Peach Month, let us pay tribute to these farmers and to the fruit that earned Georgia the name "Peach State."

tension Director, Jim Willis, harvest was 60-70 percent complete in his area as of July 1 and expected to continue for approximately three more weeks. "Peaches harvested during this time will be the best to eat fresh," he noted. Customers of pick-your-own operations will have the added advantage of harvesting these naturally sweet, tree-ripened
peaches. Willis said growers have received
a good price for their crop, particularly for the larger fruit. Consumers should have an adequate supply although they may pay a slightly higher price this year.
Recent rains helped improve the size of peaches, but they also increased the occurence of brown rot, a disease caused by the fungus Monilinia fructicola. "This year is the worst I've ever seen it (brown rot)," noted Peach County Extension Director Joe Chapman. He added that growers now have the problem under control after missing a couple of sprayings earlier in the season because of the weather. Chap'man said the crop in his county is expected to be about half of a normal harvest, but the prices received by growers have been good thus far.

Georgia Cooking

Mrs. Blondie Wesbrooks of Clarkston, Georgia, was selected as the winner of the annual Georgia Beef CookOff. The cook-off is sponsored by the Georgia CattleWomen's Association in cooperation with the Georgia Beef Board and the Georgia Cattlemen's Association.
After seeing the article in the Market Bulletin, Mrs. Wesbrooks entered her recipe for Burgundy Beef Stew. Her winning recipe gives her the opportunity to represent Georgia at the National Beef Cook-Off in Sun Valley, Idaho, September 20-22.
Mrs. Wesbrooks' recipe is featured below.
BURGUNDY BEEF STEW 1 cup Burgundy 1 clove garlic, finely minced 1 bay leaf
2 whole cloves
1 teaspoon salt Vz teaspoon pepper VA teaspoon thyme 2 pounds stewing beef, extra lean,
cut into 1 inch cubes % cup olive oil 2 (10% ounce) cans beef broth 12 small onions, whole 12 fresh mushroom caps 3 large carrots, cut into 1 inch slices Hot cooked rice or hot buttered noodles
Combine Burgundy, garlic, bay leaf, cloves, salt, pepper, and thyme. Blend well. Pour over beef in a shallow baking dish; tightly cover and refrigerate overnight.
Drain meat, reserving marinade. Remove cloves and bay leaf and discard. Heat oil in heavy dutch oven over medium heat, add beef and brown on both sides. Add beef broth and reserved marinade. Bring to a boil. Cover; reduce heat and simmer for one and a half (1 1/2) hours. Add onions, mushrooms and carrots. Cover and cook for an additional thirty (30) minutes.
Serve on a bed of hot rice or noodles. Yield: 6 servings

Horses, mules, ponies for sale
If you have questions regarding this category, call Ora Garel 656-3727.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication.

Helping 'Each Ot\ie\

Dear Editor,

We own and direct a licensed residential group

home that provides 24 hour care for teenage girls.

We currently are seeking donated farm animals to

develop a program that will assist our residents

who have emotional, intellectual or behavioral

limitations. Knowing that caring for animals can be

tremendous therapy, we are interested in all kinds

of animals: chickens, hogs, cattle, sheep, goats,

horses, rabbits, etc. Thank you for any assistance

you can give.

Dear Editor:
Everyone is asking, "Where have all the martins gone?"
The bridges at Lakes Oconee and Sinclair are covered with them. Hundreds have built nests on the steel girders, and some of the nests are eight to ten inches high.
The birds have easy access to mud and grass for their nests, and to say the insects are plentiful would be putting it mildly. It is amusing to watch them and they do not seem to be frightened of people.
Now, can someone tell me where the gulls have gone? The first two or three times we went to Oconee, they were plentiful; now there are none.

ill areas of agriculture, and since tobacco is such an important part of Georgia's agricultural economy, he is very interested in learning first hand about its marketing and sales."
Based on reports from the advis ory board, Irvin said Georgia's tojacco crop is maturing about two weeks behind the historic norm, due n part to a wet, and mild spring alanting season. However, the 1987 :rop is on target with last year's )pening date of July 29. In most growing regions, tobacco develop ment is uneven, but the quality of ;he crop appears to be good overall, jvin said.
"With the buyout of the surplus ;obacco held by the Flue-Cured Sta bilization Corporation, our growers ire in a position to reap the rewards )f a more market-driven commodty," Irvin said. "We have been told ;hat interest from domestic compalies will be strong as long as our growers produce a crop that is

clean, naturally ripened and of good quality."

If you enjoy gardening and help[ing others, there are openings in ! the 1987 Extension Master Gar dener Program. The objective of the program is to train volunteers to help the Extension Service reach more county residents with educa tional programs.
Learn Food Preservation Methods Through Correspondence Course
If you have always wanted to take a course in food preservation but never had the time, you can enroll in the DeKalb Extension Service's home study course.
The six lessons are mailed to your home and include valuable information on food safety, freezing, canning, and drying of fruit and vegetables. Instructions for making jams, jellies, pickles and relishes also are included.
The $5 fee includes all printed materials and postage. For further information or to enroll, call 404371-2821.

Each person chosen for a specific job description is expected to volun teer the same amount of time to their county Extension Service.
These jobs may include answering inquiries of telephone callers, edit ing information and setting up mini-clinics in public areas.
The 20 class sessions will begin September 8 and continue each Tuesday and Thursday through No vember 17. Morning sessions will be held at the Atlanta Botanical Gar den in Piedmont Park from 9:30 p.m. until noon. Evening sessions are scheduled for 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at Clayton State College in Morrow, located off Interstate 75 south.
The program costs $50 (for train ing supplies) and deadline for appli cations is August 3. Call your county extension office for job de scriptions and application forms. Only persons who qualify for spe cific volunteer job descriptions will be selected.

Grandpa's Garden

Blossom end rot is a fairly com mon problem affecting tomatoes during the summer months. This condition, caused by a calcium defi ciency, appears as large, dry, brown or black spots on the bottom of tomatoes.
The long term solution to a cal cium deficiency is to lime your tomato plot with dolomitic lime stone in both the fall and spring. Limestone is a slow-releasing, but safe, form of calcium for your gar den. If tomatoes already are suffer ing from blossom end rot, it is too late to apply limestone.
You can provide a quick cure by spraying the leaves with calcium chloride, available in most garden centers and farm supply stores. The treatment will not improve the af fected tomatoes, but it will prevent future occurences of the problem.
Fertilizing the plants with cal cium nitrate also will provide a fairly quick response, but you can easily burn the roots with this fer tilizer unless it is applied carefully and with adequate water.
Provide your plants with an even supply of water to prevent root stress. Plants in containers fre quently suffer from soil that is too dry one moment and too wet the next. These plants frequently show symptoms of blossom end rot since the roots are damaged and cannot pick up the calcium in the soil.
Reforestation Vital

sion offices and at the offices of the Soil Conservation Service, Agricul tural Stabilization and Conserva tion Service and county Extension Service across the state.
Landowners who intend to plant this year are urged to order early as demand for seedlings is expected to be high. Landowners who have not taken advantage of the Conserva tion Reserve Program are also re minded that the next signup period for the federally funded incentive to plant trees has been scheduled for July 20-31. Detailed information on the program is available at all Commission and ASCS offices.
We are currently harvesting ap proximately 200,000 more acres an nually than we are planting in trees and it is obvious that a very vigor ous reforestation drive must be maintained if we are to eventually close this gap between demand and supply. It is important that land owners in our state replant every acre that is harvested and also convert low productive crop lands and other marginal acreage to for est land.
As we increased the 24 million acres of forest land in Georgia to meet the needs of an ever expand ing forest industry complex, the Georgia Forestry Commission is fully committed to providing the necessary quality seedlings.

Use Good Cultural Practices

Makin'

Throughout Growing Season *

Insects and plant diseases can reduce the pleasure of gardening by lowering the quality of vegetables and reducing yields. Therefore, good cultural practices should be used throughout the growing season, be
ginning with soil preparation and continuing past harvest, to mini mize insect and disease problems.
Now that the growing season is underway, follow these guidelines to ensure your plants remain heal thy until harvest time.
* Use a mulch around plants. Disease causing organisms, which live in the soil, can be spread to vegetable foliage especially when
splashed up from soil during rain or watering. Covering the soil with a mulch will help prevent disease spores from spreading to plants. The mulch also preserves moisture and reduces weed populations.
* When watering plants, do not allow plant foliage to remain wet for more than eight to ten hours. Furrow irrigation is best because it gets water right to the roots where it is needed. However, if overhead sprinklers are used, plants should be watered in the morning or early afternoon to allow the foliage to dry before night.
* Do not use tobacco when han dling plants. A virus, tobacco mo saic, can be transferred from to bacco to many vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers. Gardeners using tobacco should wash their hands with soap and water before entering the garden. Those who use tobacco while transplanting toma
toes, peppers and eggplant should dip their hands in sweet milk. This procedure will prevent viral infec tion for a short time. Controlling insect populations such as aphids, also will help prevent the virus from being spread.
* Since some insects overwinter in plant debris, reduce insect popu lations by composting or burning the plants after the last harvest of a

they are exposed to attacks by in sects and diseases. Also, overripe vegetables are more attractive to
certain insects. * Do not allow weeds in or
around the garden area. Some in sects which are attracted to weeds will later move to garden vegeta bles. Heavy weed stands also in crease humidity, which results in greater disease problems. Remem
ber, mulching is a good way to keep weeds out of the garden.
* Use proper insecticides to con trol destructive insect populations. Sevin, malathion and diazinon are three readily available insecticides for home use which will control
most insects pests. Remember early detection of damaging insects is the key to their control.
* Apply chemical sprays to con
trol foliage blights and fruit rots. If they are not sprayed during pro longed wet periods, beans and toma toes can become defoliated. Before infection occurs, spray foliage with Maneb or Bravo. Either of these chemicals should control diseases on most vegetables. Follow direc tions and use these sprays only on the crops for which the chemicals are labeled.
* To save time and effort, consi der purchasing premixed combina
tions of pesticides. For instance, insecticides can be purchased pre mixed with fungicides. This will
allow gardeners to control insects, as well as foliage blights and fruit rots, in one application.
* Use a bacterium on cabbage and cabbage related crops. Bacillus thuringiensis, sold as Dipel, Biotrol or Thuricide, is a bacterium deadly to cabbageworms, but harmless to
man, pets and beneficial insects.

Save empty foil or waxed paper boxes to use for dispensing rolls of shelf paper the same width. Pull shelf paper out to the desired length and use the cutting edge on the box to tear the paper evenly.
Make your own ceramic tile cleaner by mixing one fourth cup of baking soda, one half cup of white vinegar and one cup of household ammonia in a bucket. Add one gallon of warm water, stirring until the baking soda dissolves. Wear rubber gloves and apply the mixture with a brush or sponge, then rinse.
Use buttermilk and a pinch of baking soda, instead of whole milk, to make your homemade waffles soft and light.
If you have an electric stove, Mrs. Samuel Jenkins of Bainbridge recommends keeping a tea kettle filled with water nearby. When you finish cooking on a burner, set the kettle on it. This holds the heat in and occasionally will provide you with a "free" kettle of hot water. If you do not have a tea kettle, a boiler filled with water will work fine.
Fernbank Center Hosts Open House
The Fernbank Science Center will open its botanical garden and green house to the public Monday through Friday, July 6-17, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. These hours are in addition to the regularly scheduled times of 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
A staff horticulturist will be on hand to answer questions and pro vide advice. The gardens and green house are located at 765 Clifton Road, and there is no fee. for addi tional information call 378-4311.

Japanese beetles have again begun their attack in Georgia. Each year this insect inflicts millions of dollars in damage to over 275 kinds of trees, crops and garden plants.
The range of the beetle seems to be widening each year since its arrival from Japan in 1961. Today, the insect is found throughout the Southeast and Middle Atlantic sea board.
Described as having copperbrown colored wings and a green oval-shaped body, the Japanese bee tle is about one-half inch long and has 12 spots along the rim of its back.
After spending most of the year in the soil as a grub, the beetle emerges as an adult in June. The adult beetles live for about two months eating foliage, flowers and fruit.
Despite their continuous wide spread attack there are some meth ods you can use to fight these pests.
Diazinon and liquid Sevin can be ' used to protect fruits and vegeta bles, but repeated use of these chemicals can lead to a buildup of
mites.

Systemic insecticides, such as dimethoate (Cygon) or acephate (Orthene), give longlasting protection for ornamentals and other nonfood crops. Although these chemicals can be used to control other insects, they are not as safe to use as Sevin. Therefore, read the package labels carefully and exercise extreme cau tion during application.
If you have a limited number of beetles, handpicking can be effec tive. To protect roses, tie the buds loosely in an old nylon stocking. Certain traps also are available and can be used effectively if placed away from the plants to be pro tected.
Your lawn may be the source of the problem if your garden is being attacked by beetles. Check your lawn in September or October. If you can roll your turf back like a carpet or find more than 10, fat white beetle grubs per square foot, consider treating your lawn with milky spore disease. The disease lasts for years and will not harm you, but it will kill the grubs.
