Students Study Ag in Classroom
Agriculture in Georgia classrooms is an exciting new dimension of the school curriculum intended for implementation in the state's kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms during the winter and spring of 1987. Not intended as a new course, "ag" can be infused into various areas of the curriculum including social studies, art, language arts, mathematics and science. Once the program is begun, children will no longer wonder about the sources of their peanut butter sandwich or glass of milk.
Thanks to the Ag in the Classroom Task Force established by Georgia's Farm Bureau Federation approximately two and one-half years ago, Georgia is among the

early states becoming a part of the national program intended to help our children understand and value the source of their food and fiber. The Task Force claims members not only from the Bureau but also from other farm organizations, the State Department of Education, university system institutions, private institutions, schools and the Georgia Council on Economic Education.
Funded by a legislative appropriation designed to cover primarily the publication costs of 5,000 educational packets, the project has been developed by several contributors: a team of classroom teachers who studied the economics of food and fiber in a summer institute at Berry College's Center for Economic Education; professors from Berry College and the University of Georgia; representatives from the Department of Education and Georgia Council on Economic Education; and the Farm Bureau Federation.
The materials for each grade cluster include the following: a scope and sequence showing six unit topics, along with lesson divisions and objectives for each; the lessons developed with background notes for the teacher; motivating

A Time for Thanksgiving
Although this has been a difficult year for many Georgia farmers, we have experienced the true spirit of giving as individuals from throughout the nation assisted our state in a time of need.
During this Thanksgiving season, let us be grateful for the generosity of our fellow man and be mindful of our many blessings.

Pecan Crop Increases Slightly Despite Unfavorable Weather

Although Georgia's pecan crop has been reduced this year due to the summer drought, the harvest is progressing and there should be an adequate supply of nuts for consumers, according to Dr. Tom Crocker, Extension horticulturist in Tifton.
Irvin Appoints Spooner Head of Field Forces
Cecil R. Spooner has been named assistant commissioner of General Field Forces for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin recently announced.
The General Field Forces Division is responsible for the
[enforcement of laws governing the surveillance, eradication and prevention of livestock disease; licensing and bonding of livestock markets, dealers I and packers; and Spooner the acquisition of samples of fertilizers, feeds and seeds for laboratory testing. These responsibilities are carried out through regional offices located in Atlanta, Albany, Cartersville, Griffin, Jesup and Thomson. Spooner joined the Marketing Division of the department in 1964, and was promoted to director of Plant, Food, Feed and Grain in

The crop is projected at 85 million pounds, down from earlier estimates of 120 to 130 million pounds.
Georgia's harvest usually begins in early October, but was delayed due to the weather earlier in the season. Many of the state's commercial growers, who also raise peanuts, use their peanut wagons for drying pecans. Since the drought delayed the peanut harvest, wagons were not readily available for the pecan harvest.
Problems experienced by Georgia growers are typical of those in other states that have resulted in an estimated decline of 14 percent in national production.
"We lost nuts because of reduced size and, in some areas, a lot of the nuts aborted and dropped," noted Crocker. However, rains in late August and early September prevented further damage and allowed this year's crop to exceed 1985 production by two million pounds. Last year's crop was cut short due to hurricane-spawned rain in south Georgia and a natural down year in the reproduction cycle of the trees.
Ideally, the weather should be drier and colder during harvest than it has been this year, said Crocker. He noted that the recent wet/warm weather provides ideal conditions for the development of mold and embryo rot, which could lead to lower nut quality. Thus far, neither has been a serious problem.
Producers also experienced some insect problems this year. "This is

Feed Program Assists Eligible Ga. Farmers
Eligible livestock owners in drought disaster counties will receive about 11 million dollars under the Emergency Cost-Share Feed Program, according to Samuel F. Brewer, state executive director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). The funds will be used to assist producers in purchasing needed hay or feed grains for their livestock or poultry.
As of October 31, 1986, ASCS offices had received 6,996 applications for assistance under the Emergency Cost-Share Feed Program. County ASCS Committees have approved 5,115 applications for 334,997,740 pounds of feed and have issued payments totaling $1,572,143.
The Emergency Cost-Share Feed Program pays eligible livestock or poultry owners 50 percent of the cost (not to exceed .05 cents per pound feed grain equivalent) purchased to replace that which is normally produced on the farm and which also is purchased in larger quantities than normal because of the emergency. To be eligible for

ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Each horse must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal. This regulation also applies to horses advertised in the special equine edition's "At Stud" category.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication.

Dear Editor: While visiting in Mississippi, I ate at a restaurant,
which had statues of a farm couple molded from pecan shells. I would like to try my hand at creating one of these figurines but I need to know how the pecan shells might be softened to be used for sculpturing. I would appreciate any help from your readers.

Dear Editor: I have been trying to find out how to do the crochet
stitch that looks like basket weave. With this particular stitch, you do not need to make a chain the size of the item you are making. For example if you are making an afghan, you just start at one corner and continue crocheting until it is the size you want. I would appreciate any assistance from your readers.

Ag in Classroom
(Continued from Page 1)

Fred Hood and his family will have plenty of pumpkins for pies during the holiday season. The Dahlonega gardener is shown with one of his prize fruits which weighed 165 pounds. During the season, the same vine which produced this giant also yielded an additional 555 pounds of pumpkins.

activities through which the chil dren will learn the principles incor porated; pretest and posttest, glos sary, and extensive annotated bibli ography.
Unit topics for each grade cluster run the gamut from the history of agriculture in Georgia to global considerations and implications.
* The Agricultural System Is Historically Significant
* The Agricultural System Is Basic to Human Needs
* The Agricultural System Is Interdependent with the Environ ment
* The Agricultural System Re quires Continual Access to Re sources
* The Agricultural System Is Interdependent with All Other Seg ments of Society
* Agricultural Production and Distribution Are Globally Interde pendent
Exciting activities such as a trip to the poultry farm or dairy to see where food items are produced and how they are collected and prepared for distribution should result in a much higher level of literacy con cerning our food and fiber system.

Also, Georgia's children will per form at much higher levels on such developmental examinations as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
A case in point is the Cedartown teacher, Mrs. Juanita Gulp, who piloted the materials in her class room during 1985-86: Sixty-three percent of her third-grade children scored above the 90th percentile; none scored below the 60th percen tile.
What a valuable contribution the study made in an area crucial to the livelihoods of all -- food and fiber which satisfy the most basic of our economic and physical needs -- food, clothing, and shelter!

If you are fortunate enough to beat the squirrels to a hickory tree for the harvest, you still must face the task of removing the hulls and cracking the nuts without pulveriz ing the meats. To remedy this prob lem, try the following technique.
After gathering the nuts, hull and wash, then assemble the follow ing items: hammer, nut pick, brick and shallow pan. Place the brick on a hard surface. Hold a hickory nut between your left thumb and fore finger with the pointed end facing right. Balance the nut, narrow edge dowr, on top of the brick and aim your hammer at a spot about onethird of the way down from the pointed end. Whack the nut with a short, sharp blow and it should pop open with the meat left intact. As you crack the nuts, drop meat sec tions into the pan, then use the pick to remove kernels.
Carol Sirles of Atlanta recom mends peeling grapefruit and or anges with a potato peeler. The peelings can then be placed in flower beds and around houseplants to repel cats.
If you have been unsuccessful trapping mice, try using cotton soaked in lard or bacon grease to entice them to the trap. Not only do the rodents like lard as food, but they also will be tempted to use the cotton to build their nests.

These fine turkeys, raised at the Wilkes Turkey Farm near Watkinsville, probably are now on their way to someone's table for Thanksgiving. Although small in comparison to the state's broiler and egg industry, commercial turkey production contributes over $34 million to our agricultural economy, making it Georgia's 14th top farm commodity.

I have heard that kudzu was brought over from another country and that it is edible. Where did it come from? Do you have any kudzu recipes you can send me? I would like to try it and see how it tastes.
Kudzu was first brought to this country from Japan in 1876 and was grown in the Japanese pavillion at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. It appeared again in 1883 at the New Orleans Exposition and, after that, a few Americans began planting this prolific vine for decoration and shade. Now kudzu can be seen all over the state, and most Georgians want to get rid of it, instead of praising its good qualities.
The Japanese have eaten the leaves and powdery starch made from them for years. We have sent the recipes you requested, as well as some nutritional information about this plant.

1967, a position he held until the promotion. In that position, Spooner was responsible for the regulation of feed and fertilizer marketed in Georgia, as well as supervision of the four grain grading laboratories in the state, and cooperative inspec tions with the Food and Brug Ad ministration of medicated feed mills.
On naming Spooner as one of his assistant commissioners, Irvin said, "I am confident that Cecil Spooner's nearly 20 years of leadership with the Bepartment will serve him well as assistant commissioner. I have every confidence he will continue to be an effective manager and leader."
Buring his years as a director in the Bepartment of Agriculture, Spooner has served as president of the Southern Feed, Fertilizer and Pesticides Control Officials, Ameri can Plant Food Control Officials, American Feed Control Officials and the Atlanta Farmers Club.
Prior to working for the Beparment of Agriculture, Spooner was an Extension agent in Telfair County and was employed by Coker Pedigreed Seed Company and BeKalb Agricultural Association.
A native of Bonalsonville, Spooner attended Berry College, and earned a bachelors degree from the University of Georgia College of Agriculture in 1953. He is married to the former Mary Ann McArthur and lives in Stone Mountain.
Spooner succeeds Assistant Com missioner Jack A. Leard, who passed away Oct. 31 after a short illness.

Pecan Crop Increases Slightly Despite Unfavorable Weather

the first time we have seen signifi cant damage from the pecan nut case borer," noted Dr. Jim Butcher, research entomologist in Tifton. Butcher said the insect's population has been building up gradually over the last few years, possibly due to reduced sprayings in late season.
According to Butcher, there was some damage from aphids, but their numbers were reduced this year because a fungus developed after the late rains and wiped out part of the population. Unfortunately, the late rains also led to an increase in pecan weevils.
In addition, Southern green stink bugs were a problem, particularly along the Georgia/Florida line near Thomasville and Bainbridge. Since these insects feed on a number of crops, Butcher advised producers to keep soybeans and other host plants away from their orchards. In addi tion, he recommended that growers begin looking for case borers and pecan weevils earlier in the season.
On-going research may help re duce many insect problems for growers. One such experiment in volves the use of lacewings and ladybugs to control aphids. Growers encourage the growth of ladybugs and lacewings by planting vetch and arrowleaf clover between tree rows. When the vetch is mowed, the insects move up into the trees to feed on aphids. According to

Butcher, the results of the tests look promising for commercial pro ducers.
Researchers also are evaluating a number of cultivars (varieties) to check their potential for commercial production in Georgia, according to

Br. J.W. Baniell, horticulturist at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin. Baniell said researchers also are trying to improve irrigation treatments to make pecan growers more effective and efficient. Cur rent research includes chemigation

Harvesting Pecans

Pecans are at optimum quality when they are har vested early and dried and stored properly, according to Tom Crocker, Extension horticulturist at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton.
Commercial pecan grow ers shake their trees with mechanical harvesters and then sweep them up and dry them in large peanut wag ons. In some cases, commer cial air drying is used. But small growers have tradi tionally allowed pecans to dry normally and fall to the ground to be picked up.
According to Crocker, pe cans are at their peak ma turity the minute the shuck starts to open. Therefore, pecan quality is highest the

earlier the nuts can be picked up and dried. Pecans should be picked up immedi ately after they fall on the ground or the trees should be shaken to make the nuts fall. Another way to harvest the nuts early is to knock the nuts out of the tree with a long cane pole.
If pecans are harvested too early, there will be ex cessive moisture in the nuts. This problem can be overcome by placing the nuts in loose bags and putting them under an open area, such as a carport, for three days to one week. Bo not stack bags filled with pecans because moisture may accumulate and cause the nuts to mold.

studies to solve insect and nematode problems and fertigation projects to enable growers to be more efficient in drip and sprinkle irrigation.
According to a recently completed grower survey, over half of the state's pecan acreage is now under irrigation, a feat accomplished only in the last 10-15 years. Since the highest quality nuts tend to come from irrigated orchards, the in crease in irrigated acres will benefit both the grower and consumers, Baniell said. "We're trying to im prove the quality of the product and at the same time improve yield and income to growers."
Although producers have been plagued by weather and insect prob lems, there has been less tree dis ease this year, according to Baniell. He said that growers with more disease-free trees should have a better start going into the next season.
Crocker said that growers with nuts to sell should get a fair price for their pecans although prices are not as high as expected in light of the reduced crop. Prices also have been hampered due to competition from the sale of walnuts and other nuts. Pecan growers usually receive their best prices early in the season when consumers are buying nuts for the holiday season.
