Group Promotes Ag Engineering
As past chairman of the Georgia Section of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers I would like to tell you about our society and the profession it, represents.
Agricultural engineering can be thought of as a combination of mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. We perform engineering services for the field of agriculture which include those required for the production and processing of food and fiber.
Our guest columnist this week is Dr. Jerry Chesness, chairman 1985-86, Ameri can Society of Agricultural Engineers -- Georgia Section, UGA College of Agricul ture, Driftmier Engineering Center, Athens

The American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) was founded in 1907. ASAE currently has about 10,000 members from the USA and 110 foreign countries. The national society is divided into 10 regional societies which are further subdivided into 41 chapters or state sections.
The Georgia state section of ASAE is the oldest state section, having celebrated its 50th birthday in 1985. Officers for the society, in addition to chairman, include chairman-elect, vice chairman for programs and'vice chairman for membership, secretary, treasurer, and several standing committee chairmen. The state section has about 240 members.
The objectives of the society are to promote engineering in agriculture, encourage research, foster engineering education and cooperate with other groups to advance Georgia's agriculture through engineering. The primary way in which the society endeavors to meet these objectives is through its two annual meetings.
The fall meeting is held at the Driftmier Engineering Center at the University of Georgia in Athens, and the spring meeting is held at different locations of interest throughout the state. The one and

For Conservation Program
Farmers in drought areas who have signed highly ero-
dible cropland into USDA's Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) now are being authorized to use their con-
tract acreage, under certain conditions, for hay production and/or grazing livestock^ Secretary of AgriteuL ture Richard Lyng recently announced this exception to
the CRP in an effort to bring; ipuch needed relief to drottgltt-stricken areas in
Fall is apple harvest time in Georgia and packing sheds are busy preparing the fruit for shipment to markets both in and out of state. With over 47 percent of the harvest complete, production is up 33 percent from the 1985 crop, which was damaged by freeze and drought. Total production is indicated at 30 million pounds, up 10 million pounds from last year, with an expected harvest of 600,000 bushels.
Although the extended drought has devastated many of the state's commodities, it has not had a severe
resistant to drought. This trait, along with the recent rains in northern Georgia, enabled growers to produce a favorable crop.
"Cool weather in recent nights will help the apples that still are on the trees to develop the deep red

impact on the apple crop. "The drought may have reduced the size of a few of our apples this year, but the trees themselves are sturdy and probably were not damaged by the dry weather," noted Georgia Com-
missioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
For example, the Rome and Granny Smith varieties are smaller this year because they are early varieties and were harvested before recent rainfall improved much of the crop.
According to Dr. Stephen Myers, tree and fruit specialist at the Uni-
color that makes them so appealing," said Irvin. "Our competitors in North Carolina have not fared as well this year, so the market for Georgia apples should be a little better." Irvin noted that the North Carolina supply is low due to frost damage earlier in the year.

Severe Drought Results In Ga. Milk Shortage
Over 50 milk trucks from as far
versity of Georgia, apples are fairly
away as Idaho are hauling milk
into Georgia each week to supply
demand for fresh milk, ice cream
and cheese because of a severe
shortage. Georgia Commissioner of
Agriculture Tommy Irvin attrib-
uted the shortage to the drought
and earlier heat wave and the fed-
eral government's whole-herd buy-
out program.
Complete figures are unavailable
at present, but overall production
by Georgia dairy cows was down
substantially during August, com-
pared with the same period last
year. Under the federal program,
119 dairies have gone out of busi-
ness during the past year.
Milkfat content also is down be-
cause the cows have been eating
less and drinking more water dur-
ing the summer heat and drought,
according to Irvin.
"We're seeing a severe crunch at
Georgia's top 4-H'ers recently met in Atlanta for the annual State 4-H our ice cream plants where they

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Dear Editor: The recent drought, which has plagued much of
Georgia, has posed a great hardship on many of our farmers. Adding to the problem, I understand that some individuals have been taking advantage of this bad situation by raising the price of hay to unreasonable limits.
I feel that the problem now facing farmers is more than a supply and demand situation. I would like to see farmers that sold hay for a certain price last year maintain that price this year.
Georgia farmers are facing serious times. For example, the very fact that many railway companies shipped hay free or at reduced rates only emphasizes this. I would like to see Georgia farmers work together to survive this crisis.

ATTENTION EQUINE ADVERTISERS
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months before being published in the paper. Effective October 15, 1986, each horse advertised in the Market Bulletin must be accompanied by a copy of a valid Coggins test before it can be published. A copy of this test must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., those advertising many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) can no longer be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing an animal.
In addition, all horse farmers must have had livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering animals for sale through this publication.

Back on the Farm
I remember long ago
when I was a kid, All the places we lived
and all the things that we did.
We were poor that's true But we didn't know,
There were things to do
and places to go.
The chores were many way back then,
We had no trouble staying thin.
When it was hot
we went to the creek, To bathe our feet
and cool our cheek.
The food was good the range was big,
We stacked the wood
and slopped the pig.
We ate fish and rabbit, squirrel and 'possum, too
Nothing seemed better, than a big pot of stew.
We milked the cow
and fed the hens, We followed the plow
and hunted dens.
Sometimes we had "hoecake" Cooked on the fire,
A big pot of beans, hung there by a wire.
Came home from school, and changed our dress,
Went to the spring for watercress.
With a handful of salt a biscuit or two,
We ate big bunches and enjoyed it, too.
Our family was big, we had lot of joys,
Six girls there were and then four boys.
When night came down our prayers were said,
We were put to sleep, on a big feather bed.
We were awakened early and sent off to school,
Where we learned and played and obeyed the rule.
Times have changed some since those days long ago,
Things move fast now where they used to be slow.
I've seen many moons my hair has turned grey,
But if I had to go back I would choose the same way.

Dear Editor: I would appreciate any information from your readers
concerning the origin of a one quart fruit jar which I purchased with other used jars about 59 years ago. The jar is made of clear glass, shaped like a vase and made by Spear Manufacturing Co. It has "7 design 7" on the bottom and "U.S. Government Trademark, Registered U.S. Patent Office No. E 1049," but no date. The jar is the only one of its kind I have ever seen.

purchase pure lanolin, please refer them to almost any drug store. Usually, only the pharmacist will understand that you aren't referring to lanolin-based products.

Editor's Note: In the July 9 issue, an ingredient was left out of the Peaches and Spongecake recipe. The recipe should have included two teaspoons of baking soda, which are added in with the flour, salt, water and flavoring.

one-half day meetings involve tech nical presentations, mini-seminars, group discussions, tours focusing on current engineering activities and needs in Georgia's agriculture. A highlight of each meeting is a ban quet for members and their spouse's and guests.
The state section has special projects, many of these relating to the approximately 130 students en rolled in agricultural engineering at the University of Georgia.
Six years ago the Georgia Section ASAE led in the establishment of the Agricultural Engineering De velopment Fund (AEDF) with the UGA Foundation to provide scholar ships and other projects to support UGA agricultural engineering.
Other activities include the subsi dized travel of ASAE student mem bers to national meetings. The state section publishes a quarterly news letter for members and other inter ested readers. Recently the state section, jointly with ASAE and the
Southeast Region of ASAE, spon sored a bronze historical marker to commemorate Eli Whitney and his invention of the cotton gin. The
marker is located in Savannah fac ing the Cotton Exchange Building on Bay Street.
Membership in ASAE is primar ily open to graduates of agricultural engineering and agricultural mech anization technology. There is an affiliate grade of membership for others working in their field who wish to be associated with agricul tural engineers.
Our members are engaged in teaching, research and extensions throughout Georgia. They also are employed by major utility compa nies, electric membership coopera tives, agribusinesses and organiza tions of practicing engineers. Some are in private engineering practice and some are engaged in production agriculture. The mission of our Georgia members is to provide engi neering practice for the field of agriculture in the state.

Consider Water Requirements Before Constructing Your Well
(Continued from page 12)
through the bottom of the well, and pumps almost always are installed.
Drilled well construction differs greatly from the previous types mentioned. The saprolite is cased off with a steel or PVC pipe and an open hole is drilled into the rock beneath it. The average diameter for a drilled well is six inches and a pump is used to remove the water. This type well is the most reliable because water is obtained from greater depths. Therefore, there is less susceptibility to water table fluctuations.
The chart below provides the av erage water requirements for house hold and yard uses. According to the University of Georgia's Exten sion Engineering Department, com mon household planning provides 50 gallons per person per day, with about half that amount used for flushing toilets. Since peak daily use can reach 100 gallons per day, this figure should be used when planning water requirements.

It also is important for farmers to know the water requirements of livestock, especially in hot weather. According to Dr. Otha Hale, swine specialist at the Coastal Plain Ex periment Station in Tifton, as a
general rule, an animal will con sume about twice as much water as feed. Since a gallon of water weighs
about eight pounds, an animal eat ing eight pounds of feed per day would need approximately two gal lons (sixteen pounds) of water daily.
The following figures should be used as general guidelines for plan ning farm water requirements. Re member, as temperature rises, con sumption will increase.

As the effects from the drought continues, it is important to con serve water whenever possible. Carefully follow these simple and easy water saving tips to help con serve our most valuable resource.
Saving Water Indoors
Do not use the toilet simply to flush facial tissues, paper and other similar solid and liquid materials. Put them in a wastepaper basket instead.
Reduce the water amount used in each toilet flush by installing a special tank insert or dam kit, or by placing a water-filled plastic bottle in the toilet tank away from the flushing mechanism. These kits or bottles can take up space and retain water in the tank. They can reduce up to one third the amount of water used in each flush.
Check the toilet for hidden water leaks. Most toilet leaks occur at the over-flow pipe or the flush ball or because of a defective float.
Use inexpensive flow control devices in shower head fixtures and in faucets. These can save from one to four gallons per minute.
Do not fill the bathtub too full. Usually one fourth of a tub is enough.
Take shorter showers. Unless a shower lasts seven minutes or less, bathing in the tub will use less water and will conserve energy.
Repair leaky faucets. One drop per second can waste seven gallons a day. A steady drip will waste 20 gallons per day.
Do not use garbage disposals except at the end of cooking or clean-up periods or when full. Whenever possible, do not use the disposal at all. Compost vegetable peelings for your garden or put them in the garbage can.
Run an automatic dishwasher only with full loads. Do not prewash dishes unless necessary.
Run clothes washers only with a full load unless a reduced fill setting is available.
For hand laundering, put a stopper in the washtub for both washing and rinsing, and do not let the water run.
Insulate the hot water pipes between the heater and the faucets to reduce the amount of water that must be run to get hot water.
Saving Water Outdoors
Carefully follow outdoor water ing restrictions or instructions, whether mandatory or voluntary, that may apply in your city, county or community.
Water lawns and gardens wisely and only when needed. Do not over water. Avoid watering on windy days, and water less on cloudy or cool days. Water in the early mornings to avoid evaporation losses.
Make certp*ny,, sprtaklers and hoses are adj.ust^ -Itf cover only

Wheji irrigating lawns, water slowly, deeply and infrequently for
Ug'e a '^-moisture-sensing device to turrf automatic sprinkler systems on andSpff. /
Carefully fertilize your lawn. A well-nourished lawn requires less watering.
Use a broom instead of a hose and pressurized water to clean leaves and debris off sidewalks, driveways, etc.
When washing the car, rinse it once and use a bucket of soapy water to wash it. Then give it one more quick rinse.
If you own a swimming pool, observe pool water restrictions if they become necessary. Consider purchasing a cover to reduce water evaporation. Keep the water level at least six inches below the pool's edge to reduce water loss from splashing.

Grandpa's Garden
If you want your poinsettia to "bloom" for Christmas, place your plant on a short day, long-night schedule starting in September and ending around Thanksgiving. You must keep the plant in total dark ness from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. the following day.
Christmas cacti also set flower buds under conditions of reduced day-length and cool night tempera tures. These conditions occur nor mally outdoors during late Septem ber and early October. Therefore, you can influence the bud set of your Christmas cactus by leaving it outdoors for several weeks in the fall, then moving it indoors. Should temperatures drop drastically dur ing this period, move the plant inside for protection.
Yellow jackets seem to enjoy out.door summer activities as much as people (particularly picnics). To dis courage these annoying pests, one remedy suggests filling a dish one third full of plain old cider vinegar and placing it nearby to keep them away.
You may also try trapping pesty yellowjackets in a homemade trap. Take a piece of screen wire cloth (screen wire can be used but is stiff and hard to manage). Roll wire to make a "cone" and staple it together, leav ing the small end open about one half inch in diam eter. Place cone inside wide
mouth fruit jar, fold excess wire over rim and screw ring over the wire to hold it in place. Bait the trap with fruit or jelly and place the . jar where yellow jackets swarm most. Put the jar upside down on one inch blocks (see sketch) with bait underneath. The insects will go to the bait and fly up the cone into the jar and cannot escape. When the jar is one-fourth full, fill it with water to drown the insects, empty, and the trap is ready to use again.
A strong cup of coffee left from breakfast should not be discarded. Sprinkle it on plants to discourage red spider mites.
Create your own personal scare crow from items around the house. For example, cut a plastic trash bag into long strips and staple them to the lip of a cup. Glue or nail the cup to a five foot stake and place in a strategic spot in the garden to deter birds.
Some gardeners take a different apporach when defending their gar den against birds. By planting sun flowers at the end of each row and down the sides of the garden, they claim that the birds are too busy eating the seeds to bother their vegetables.

Enjoy Delicious Georgia Apples
(Continued from Page 1)
Ga. Milk Shortage
(Continued from Page 1)
Another reason for the stronger market for Georgia apples is that Washington apples, usually still held in controlled atmosphere stor age, were depleted earlier this year, thus reducing competition for the early fall U.S. market.
The market is expected to remain strong until mid-September when other states begin placing their ap ples on the market. "Right now we're having a pretty good year with processing prices fairly strong," said Dr. Stephen Myers, tree and fruit specialist at the Uni versity of Georgia. Unfavorable weather conditions reduced the value of last year's crop to only $1,793,000, down from the $3,760,000 received in 1984.
According to Georgia Department of Agriculture Home Economist Ruth Rogers, it is more economical to buy apples in large quantities while they are in season. "Most Georgia varieties will keep fresh for several months if they are stored at cool temperatures," she noted. "Freezing and canning will assure a year-round supply."
For further information on Geor gia apples and recipes using them, call the Georgia Department of Ag riculture, toll-free, 1-800-282-5852, or write to Room 227, Capitol Square, Atlanta 30334. In metro Atlanta, call 656-3645.

I plan to purchase a wood-burn ing heater for use this winter and have been trying to learn all I can about firewood. I have noticed that wood usually is sold by the cord. What is the exact measurement or weight of a cord and how can I be sure I am getting all the wood I pay for?
A cord refers to the measure ment of cut wood when it is stacked up together. A true cord measures 4 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet, or any variation of this that equals 128 cubic feet. There is no stan dard weight for a cord, since it would vary depending on the type or types of wood that make up the stack.

What is a pregnant onion? Can it be eaten?
Ornithogalum umbellatum, com monly called pregnant onion or false sea onion, is a bulb that is grown indoors. It produces long, strap-shaped leaves that will hang down and trail up to five feet. The bulb grows on the soil surface, not beneath it. Bulblets form under the skin and grow quite large be fore they drop and take root. These bulbs are poisonous and should not be eaten.

cream and fresh milk. In some cases, milk plants have been forced to reconstitute powdered milk in order to meet local demand for buttermilk, and ice cream plants have begun purchasing butter and cream from the federal govern ment's surplus inventory.
The Commissioner added that milk processors have been absorb ing the transportation costs for moving milk to Georgia, but by the end of the month consumers could see a price increase at the retail level.
"We have stepped up our inspec tion and sampling program to as sure that this imported milk meets Georgia's high quality standards," Irvin said. "We had feared this kind of shortage would result from the federal buy-out program. Combined with the drought and the heat wave we experienced earlier this sum mer, Georgia is now faced with one of the most serious milk shortages we've seen."
Consider Water Requirements Before Constructing Your Well
Although a water supply system can represent a sizeable investment for a home or farm, often little thought is given to the planning and construction of a water well until a crisis, such as the recent drought, arises.
Over the years water use has increased greatly, due largely to more liberal general use and the addition of automatic water-using equipment such as dishwashers and clothes washers. The increase in number of swimming pools and in lawn and garden sprinkling has added further to the demand for water.
Before beginning the construc tion of a water system, consider your water requirements and the availability of supply. And, consult a licensed well driller for his recom mendations.
Following is a comparison of the most common water sources used by Georgia homes and farms which do not obtain their water from munici palities.
Well Types
There are three basic types of wells in use today - dug, bored and drilled. Dug and bored wells obtain water mostly from the saprolite layer in the soil subsurface. Saprol ite is disintegrated, somewhat de composed, rock that lies in its origi nal position. Drilled wells penetrate the underlying rock and obtain water from openings, cracks, and crevices in the rock.
Dug wells usually are con structed with a pick and shovel. As a result, they generally are confined to the saprolite layer and are the shallowest type of well. A dug well may be shored with wood or it may be bricked, but concrete pipe is used most often to case the well. Often only the bottom of the well is cased, usually the part below the water
table. The water generally is drawn by hand, but some wells are equipped with shallow-well pumps.
Bored wells get their water en tirely from the saprolite, because a well-boring machine is not capable of penetrating hard rock. If the water table is near the base of the saprolite, bored wells cannot be used. Concrete pipe, 24 to 36 inches in diameter, is used to case bored wells. The well is cased from the land surface to the bottom of the well. Water enters the well through loose-fitting joints in the pipe and
