Boll Weevil Referendum Fails

The cotton grower referendum on a proposed boll weevil eradication program has failed, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said last Thursday.
"It is disappointing but we had neither the required number of ballots from eligible growers nor did enough of those voting vote for the program," Irvin said.
Of the 1709 eligible cotton growers, 776 or 45.5 percent voted; 512 or 65.98 percent voted in favor of the pro-

gram. To pass, a minimum of 50 percent or 855 growers need to vote with 66.7 percent of that number voting in favor.
Irvin attributed the defeat to the depressed farm economy and to growers' concerned with damage to their crop from Hurricane Kate. He noted that another referendum could be held if conditions change and if members of the Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation so choose.
