Pest Control
Comes Together
Entomology, "bugology," pest con trol, eradication, biological control, chemical control, integrated pest control, vector control, mosquitoes, pantry pests, termites, house flies,
southern pine bee tle, boll weevil, corn earworm, and others too numerous to name, all mean something to the people and the State of Georgia.
Georgia is blessed with a
climate and a land which is suitable for very diverse agriculture. From apple production in the highlands to peanuts and tobacco in the coastal plain with forest products, bee pro duction, corn, soybean and pasture

throughout her realm. Along with this boon the conditions are likewise very favorable for some of mankind's oldest banes-insects.
However, the Georgia farmer is not without help. Entomologists con stantly are investigating ways to combat these age-old pests. En tomologists in Georgia include state personnel, University of Georgia research and Extension workers, U. S. Dept, of Agriculture researchers, private consultants and a group of technical and research specialists from private industry.
I, as an entomologist, and many of my colleagues have had the tendency to think that if we could solve the insect problems the grower would have most of his pest pro blems solved. The grower knows from personal experience that in sects are only a part (sometimes the least part) of his total pest problems.
Weeds, diseases, nematodes, viruses, mammals, birds, slugs, snails, etc. are also pests that can cause losses in yield and quality of a crop. Consequently, the farmer has

The luncheon meats, eggs and other products at our store have expired dates on them. This is my second complaint.
J. S. Woodbury Our inspector conducted an investigation at the store and explained the importance of meat violation on open dating to the owner. He also warned the owner that this was the second complaint of this nature against his store and a third violation on open dating could result in an embargo of all products. AH out-dated products were removed from sale in the presence of the inspector.

The packages of frozen food at our store are often wet and soft. Is this due to improper temperature?
S.W. Tucker We went to the store in question. The frozen food case temperature were from zero degrees to five degrees fahrenheit. During a defrost cycle, an in crease of ten degrees fahrenheit in product temperature is allowed. The boxes tend to be softer during the defrost cycle, but not the product itself.

Georgia Pecans
Crop Grew From a Few Trees
To No. One in U.S. Production
Compared with other orchard crops, Georgia's pecan industry is relatively new. It has developed from small three and four tree orchards to its present
magnitude primarily during this century.
The pecan is native to the United States, originating in the Mississippi Valley region. Like many other crops, the nuts were probably in troduced to Georgia by the Indians.
North American Indians are said to have pounded pecan kernels, add ed them to boiling water and used the mixture as seasoning for food.
This is the tenth in a series about the history of Georgia agriculture.
The mixture also was used to thicken venison broth, season hominy and in some cases allowed to ferment an in toxicating drink popular in tribal festivities. Eventually, the natives in troduced pecans to early settlers and began exchanging the nuts for trinkets and tools.
Georgia's commercial pecan pro duction began during the late 1800's. In 1886, the Southern Cultivator reported that several individuals suc-
cessfully had produced and marketed pecans on a small scale near Savannah. Nelson Tift established a 500 tree orchard in 1887 near Albany which he expand ed to 2500 trees within two years. By 1889 there were 97 acres of pecans planted throughout Georgia com pared with 1000 acres in Mississippi and 2000 acres in Louisiana.
The years 1880 through 1900 were often considered the "Golden Years" of horticulture in the South. G. M. Bacon of Dewitt, S. W. Peck of Hart well, and James Tift and J. P. Gill of Albany were considered pioneers in the early development of Georgia's pecan industry. In addition, H. P. Stuckey, director of Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Station, conducted pecan research in a day when the nuts faced an uncertain future. The success of the states'

The MARKET BULLETIN has received many Inquiries regarding our policy on advertising
lawnmowers.
Regrettably, space does not permit us to advertise lawnmowers in the BULLETIN. The only mowers which are per mitted are those which are used for agricultural purposes, i.e., hay mowing, bush hogging, orchard/pasture mowing, etc.
A mower should have a minimum 44 in. cut to be useful on the farm and/or accept at tachments such as tillers, plows and other implements.

pecan industry can be partly attributed to his early efforts.
As a result of the growing interest in the pecan industry, the Southern Nut Growers Association was established in Albany in 1901. Later the group became known as the National Nut Growers Association.
The Georgia/Florida Pecan Growers held their first con vention in 1907 and continued through 1933. This group was the parent organization for the Southeastern Pecan Growers Association which was established in 1934 and is still active today.
By 1905, there were several thousand acres of pecans across the state. These or chards provided a solid foun-

Pest Control

to manage his business so that his pest problems are minimized for maximum net return. In other words, he in tegrates his pest management.
"Integrated pest manage ment" has been a much used term in the past two decades. Academic, government and private forces gradually have been bringing all their exper tise into closer cooperation for a,total integration of pest management.
A case in point is that for the first time the main profes
sional state societies of Georgia concerned with pest management, the Georgia En tomological Society, the Georgia Association of Plant Pathology and the Georgia Weed Control Society, will be meeting jointly in March of 1983 in Albany.
Specific answers to specific problems will con tinue, of necessity, to be work ed on within narrow scopes, but the growers of Georgia should be encouraged by this greater professional coopera tion to combat all of his pest problems.
From a Few Trees To No. One in U.S. Production
dation for the further develop ment of the industry.
Over 450,000 had been established in the Albany area by 1910. After that, plantings seemed to be continous with more than 1,000,000 trees planted by 1920. Production also increased from approx imately 27,000 pounds in 1900 to 2,500,000 in 1920.
During the years 1910 through 1925, various real estate organizations and pro moters in the southeast planted thousands of acres in pecans. One company sold 25,000 acres of such orchards in five and 10 acre units in Doughtery and Mitchell Coun ties.
While some of these agen cies were trustworthy and worked to help the struggling
new pecan industry, other promoters took advantage of the situation. They made ex travagant claims for getting rich from pecans with little or no effort or additional costs. For example, one promoter claimed, "A pecan grove of five acres nets $2500 yearly with no worry, no loss of crop and little cost of upkeep. The papershell pecan begins bear ing in two years, produces fif ty to two hundred and fifty pounds at ten years, with yearly increases thereafter . . . five acres will keep the average family in comfort." Of course, no purchaser ever realized as much as promised by some development com panies; many lost their invest ment in pecan groves while others combined small acreages with larger and some
ventures were successful. By 1925, Georgia's pecan or
chards consisted of more than two million trees. From 1940 to 1948 pecan production almost doubled from 23,000,000 pounds to 40,000,000 pounds. By the 1950's Georgia's pecan was well established and the state led the nation in pecan pro duction.
Today, over fifty percent of the pecans grown in the United States are grown in Georgia and the state con tinues to be number one in production. In 1981, Georgia produced 120 million pounds of pecans. The value of pro duction was over $66 million.
