Ga. Livestock
The marketing sector is an impor tant link between Georgia's livestock producers and the ultimate con sumers of their products. Georgia's livestock markets are proud of their long history of service to the state's livestock buyers and sellers.
Georgia's livestock markets per form a variety of critical services to insure that the livestock industry has an uninterrupted channel of com merce, and to see that buying and selling transactions are handled ef fectively, and in a financially respon sible manner.
First, of course, the auction market way of merchandising livestock

means that there will be competitive bidding. On the seats of a typical Georgia market are a variety of buyers, with a variety of interests. For the seller, competitive marketing means that he won't be at the mercy of one buyer -- competitive bidding is still the best way to get the best price.
And for the buyer, attending a sale at a Georgia livestock market -- con veniently located across the state -- it saves time and energy, and certain ly beats driving from ranch to ranch, and up and down country roads looking for livestock.
The Georgia livestock market owner and his associates are full time marketing businessmen. They watch the market everyday, because it's their full-time job. That means that they're a good source of marketing advice for the producers in their area. They can tell the pro ducer the best time to buy and sell. Producers can put these years of marketing experience to work for them just by calling or visiting their nearest market.
No discussion of the merits of livestock auction market selling would be complete without mention ing the tremendous financial risk shouldered daily by Georgia markets. It's an awesome respon-,

Entomology, the study of insects, has an impact on all mankind, par ticularly farmers. For this reason, the field offers a variety of career opportunities as the search con tinues for new, inexpensive, safe and effective ways of eliminating insect pests.
"One motivating factor behind a career in entomology is that insects are important," Canerday said. "They often compete for the same things man wants."
According to Canerday, cost from insect damage and control is bet ween $300 and $500 million annual ly in Georgia. "This large amount of

I don't understand the new coding used in the grocery stores and the scanners are not accurate. When I checked my receipt last week, I was charged twice for the same item.

The mistake on your receipt was from human error, not the scanner. When you find a mistake on your receipt, bring it to the attention of the manager. We are sending you a pamphlet on the scanners and the Universal Product Code.
An example of recent progress is a discovery made by Coastal Plain Experiment Station entomologists. They have developed methods to at tract soldier flies to poultry houses which in turn reduces house fly populations which spread diseases. Soldier flies save poultry farmers money because they reduce manure 45 percent in bulk, make it 14 per cent drier while providing close to 100 percent fly control.

Agricultural seed and
plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are pro tected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale
unless the grower is certified. Pro pagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Seed Division of the Depart ment of Agriculture, 656-3633.

jobs require technical knowledge and a master's degree gives a can didate a competitive advantage."
The beginning salary range for a student with a bachelor's degree is $12,000 to $15,000. Graduates with a master's degree can expect to earn between $14,000 and $20,000 in their first year of work. A doctoral degree is a requirement to teach entomology in a college or university. The begin ning salary range for a doctorate degree is between $22,000 and $30,000.
The University of Georgia en tomology program was ranked by a USDA review team as one of the top programs in the country. The pro gram also offers a master's degree in plant protection and pest manage ment.
Canderday explained that this degree is offered as a joint program with entomology, agronomy and plant pathology. "This degree is
becoming very popular with in dustry," he said. "The students get such a diversity of course-work, they become valuable employees."
Private consulting, state and federal agencies, and the military also offer challenging careers for en tomologists, Canerday said.
The sunbelt states may have more opportunities for entomologists, Canerday said, because insect pro blems are more serious in the warm, humid climate. "Generally, all agricultural areas have jobs related to entomology."
More information on the universi ty's entomology program can be ob tained by writing to Dr. Canerday at the Entomology Department, Barrow Hall, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602.
