FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy Irvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin VOL. 68, NO. 30 Wednesday, July 28, 1982 Tftfti Da% Markets Move Ga. Livestock The marketing sector is an impor tant link between Georgia's livestock producers and the ultimate con sumers of their products. Georgia's livestock markets are proud of their long history of service to the state's livestock buyers and sellers. Georgia's livestock markets per form a variety of critical services to insure that the livestock industry has an uninterrupted channel of com merce, and to see that buying and selling transactions are handled ef fectively, and in a financially respon sible manner. First, of course, the auction market way of merchandising livestock (Our guest columnist this week is Tom Dally, Jr., President of the Georgia Livestock Markets Association, Inc., P.O. Box 546, Social Circle 30279.) means that there will be competitive bidding. On the seats of a typical Georgia market are a variety of buyers, with a variety of interests. For the seller, competitive marketing means that he won't be at the mercy of one buyer -- competitive bidding is still the best way to get the best price. And for the buyer, attending a sale at a Georgia livestock market -- con veniently located across the state -- it saves time and energy, and certain ly beats driving from ranch to ranch, and up and down country roads looking for livestock. The Georgia livestock market owner and his associates are full time marketing businessmen. They watch the market everyday, because it's their full-time job. That means that they're a good source of marketing advice for the producers in their area. They can tell the pro ducer the best time to buy and sell. Producers can put these years of marketing experience to work for them just by calling or visiting their nearest market. No discussion of the merits of livestock auction market selling would be complete without mention ing the tremendous financial risk shouldered daily by Georgia markets. It's an awesome respon-, (Continued on Page 8) ag consumer line . . . Please send an inspector to correct this problem. Insects have an impact upon every individual. Understanding this relation ship between man and insects creates a rewarding career, said Dr. T. Don B. M. Canerday, entomology division chairman at the University of Georgia Col Atlanta lege of Agriculture. The cans of peanuts and unlabel ed dog food were removed from sale. The owner has agreed to change the lights. Our inspector will do a follow-up visit to ensure the lights are changed. For this reason, the field offers a variety of career opportunities as the search con tinues for new, inexpensive, safe and effective ways of eliminating insect pests. "One motivating factor behind a career in entomology is that insects are important," Canerday said. "They often compete for the same things man wants." According to Canerday, cost from insect damage and control is bet ween $300 and $500 million annual ly in Georgia. "This large amount of keep in the refrigerator? money illustrates the importance in M. N. sects have on our economy," he said. When I checked my receipt last week, I was charged twice for the same item. J. P. Union Point The mistake on your receipt was from human error, not the scanner. When you find a mistake on your receipt, bring it to the attention of the manager. We are sending you a pamphlet on the scanners and the Universal Product Code. An example of recent progress is a discovery made by Coastal Plain Experiment Station entomologists. They have developed methods to at tract soldier flies to poultry houses which in turn reduces house fly populations which spread diseases. Soldier flies save poultry farmers money because they reduce manure 45 percent in bulk, make it 14 per cent drier while providing close to 100 percent fly control. pest control jobs, he said. Oppor tunities also are developing with pesticide companies in sales, promo tion, marketing, product develop ment and research. Students have a better chance of locating a job if they have a master's degree, Canerday said.
