Can I feed my "day old" light bread to my channel catfish?
T.M., Harlem The fish expert we checked with said that day old light bread is not recommended for catfish because it is not a balanced diet and can lead to problems in the long run. We have sent you a pamphlet on catfish farming with recommended feeding.

Consider Poultry Science Field
For Many Career Opportunities
The continuing expansion and diversification of the poultry science field, coupled with a lack of qualified personnel, is resulting in an abundance of rewarding career opportunities in poultry science, according to Dr. Morley G. McCartney, division chairman and poultry science department head in the University of Georgia College of Agriculture.
Students may choose from a wide variety of occupations in the field, from farming to management. "Science, business and technology are all involved in poultry science," McCartney said. "In addition to op portunities in teaching and research, there are jobs available in quality control, sales, poultry-related food science, management, parasitology, physiology, genetics, nutrition, pathology, toxicology, marketing and mycotoxicology, the study of poisons which grow from molds on feed grains."
Ninety-five percent of poultry
science graduates with bachelor degrees go into industrial work, ac cording to McCartney. He said that at the bachelor's level opportunities are primarily for service personnel, who function largely as contacts bet ween farmers and growers. "The poultry system in the state of Georgia is fully integrated," he explained. "Firms contract to grow chickens until they reach a certain weight, and then they turn them over to farmers." Starting salaries range from $16,000 to $20,000, and it is not uncommon to see poultry graduates with more experience earning over $40,000.
If you are planning a summer vacation and you do not have a plant-sitter, try this suggestion. Fill your bathtub with four to six inches of water. Place empty pots upside down in the water and set your plants on top of them. Tape a large plastic bag or piece of plastic over the tub. Open the curtains to let in as much daylight as possible and enjoy your vacation.
Approximately one-third of the total gross farm income in Georgia is from poultry, McCartney said. The poultry industry has more income and employees than all of the state's other animal industries combined.
The poultry science department at the University of Georgia has about 55 underg' aduate students and 25 graduate students. Georgia offers the chance for students to receive in dividual attention in this division which has 25 professors. "Athens has the greatest concentration of poultry research scientists in the world," McCartney said. "We also have other poultry units near cam pus such as the USDA Russell Research Center, the Southeast Poultry Lab, and the poultry unit in the vet school."
(Continued on Page 8)
To control destructive snails and slugs in your flower garden, Mrs. Lee Ball, Sr., of Tifton, recommends sprinkling Epsom salt around your plants.
"When planting trees, flowers, or shrubs, I stand a length of pipe (plastic or metal) off to one side of the prepared hole, then plant as usual," explained K. Lane of Valdosta. "This pipe can be used to take water directly to the roots and most plants will live using this method."
Learn to Preserve
If you are interested in preserving your own food, take advantage of free classes offered by the Fulton County Extension Service.
A food preservation class will be offered on the following dates at various locations in the Metro area: July 1, 8, 13, 14 and 16. In addition, a course on jelly and preserve making is planned for July 14. Make reserva tions for the courses by calling 393-4670.

plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are pro tected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Pro pagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Seed Division of the Depart ment of Agriculture, 656-3633.
