Pest Control
Helps Us All
June is National Pest Control Month, a time to make the public aware of the importance of the pest control industry to the welfare and economy of Georgia.
Because of the very nature of the services provided by the pest control industry, we are a vital link to the continuous pro cess of protecting the health and sanitation of the public. This is an enormous responsibility and requires constant education and

diligent awareness of the products and techniques available to us. We accept the challenge to stay abreast of the latest information available and to the changing needs of the con sumer along with the acknowledge ment that the public welfare and safety come first.
Because of our responsibility to the public welfare, we recognize the necessity of becoming actively in volved, through local, state, and na tional trade associations, in pro viding the consumer with educa tional information about our grow ing industry and monitoring the at titudes and actions of the public of ficials responsible for regulating the pest control industry.
The National Pest Control Associa tion recently conducted a national survey to determine the public awareness of the functions of the pest control industry. A complete report is available through the association.
Of importance to us here are the results of the survey when the public was asked to identify the term "pest control." A majority of the public related pest control with "household pest control."

What will kill moss on the ground under the trees in my yard? It is spreading and killing my grass. Also, what kind of fertilizer should I put on centipede grass?
B.G., College Park
In order to kill the moss in your yard, you will need to aerate it or turn it under. Under normal cir cumstances, you would use agriculture lime to control the moss, but a centipede lawn would be killed by this lime application. Centipede requires very little fer tilization. Never apply lime to a centipede lawn unless soil tests show an extremely low pH. To fer tilize, use five pounds of 12-4-8 fer tilizer to 1,000 square feet of grass.
June dairy month celebrates its 46th birthday this year. This annual event began in 1937 when June was selected as the most productive month in the dairy calendar. Since that time May has become the month with the highest milk production figures, but June is still celebrated because of tradition.

Go. Wheat Farmers Begin 1982 Harvest
Scientific authorities on fire ant control will take part in the program. Public comment and participation will be permitted during panel discussion on Monday afternoon June 7, Tuesday afternoon June 8 and Wednesday morning June 9.
The conference is scheduled for the Atlanta American Hotel in Atlan ta. There is a $20 registration fee.
The goal of the symposium is to establish a sound base of up-to-date scientific information on fire ant control and to assist USDA, EPA and state agencies throughout the United States in making future program decisions.
Although Georgia farmers will harvest a record 1,300,000 acres of wheat this spring, production levels are predicted to be lower than last year's record breaking yields.
If early production estimates become a reality, Georgia farmers should produce a total of 44,200,000 bushels of wheat, an average of 34 bushels per acre, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This estimate is nine bushels below last year's record average of 43 bushels per acre and total produc
tion of 46,200,000 bushels. A reduction in yield is expected as
a result of a higher occurance of fungus leaf diseases such as powdery mildew, leaf rust and septoria, a
disease which blackens the wheat head and reduces test weight, accor ding to Dr. D. D. Morey, agronomist, Coastal Plains Experiment Station, Tifton.
Extreme fluctuations in winter temperatures, along with damp, warm weather also provided favorable conditions for these diseases.
In 1981, ideal weather conditions were a major contribution to the record breaking production levels. Georgia experienced an unusually dry spring which reduced problems with fungus leaf diseases.
Winter wheat production appeals to Georgia farmers because it fits
