Homemakers
Reaching Out
The Georgia Homemakers Council reaches out and touches people across the state in many ways.
The purpose of the Georgia Homemakers Council is to help
homemakers join together in order to strengthen their homes and family which play a vital role in each com munity. Our educational and service programs, such as our Energy program and annual conference, are a natural outgrowth of the mutual concerns of homemakers across the state.
(Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Robert Jones, President, Georgia Homemakers Council, Box 7, Mat thews 30818.)
During the summer of 1981, 300 members participated in the Energy Education Program. This program was implemented by the Council in order to increase the comfort of the elderly, disabled and those with limited incomes as well as to en courage more efficient energy management in their homes.
We recently held our 58th annual conference in Athens. Approximate ly 250 delegates attended from all sections of the state. "Pathways to Progress" was the theme of the con ference. I can truly say that we took many paths and made much pro gress in all areas of our work.
For example, the conference of fered workshops on citizenship, safe ty, health, family life, public rela tions and cultural arts. Demonstra tions and displays made by council m&mbers were featured which in cluded machine quilting, cake decorating, egg shell decorating and origami, the art of Japanese paper folding.
Over 1000 items were entered in the 15 categories of the Cotton Crea tions Contest with over $1000 in prize money distributed. In addition, the annual dress revue attracted 40 contestants.

Grandpa's
Garden
With Georgia sweet onion season upon us, many people are interested in how to produce their own. Grow ing sweet onions is an art that our onion farmers in Southeast Georgia have perfected. However, if you want to try your hand at growing the delicacy in your garden, follow these guidelines.
Granex and Granex 33 are the two varieties now being used to produce sweet onions. Transplants should be set out in December in South Georgia. However, in the northern part of the state, you should wait un til late February or early March when extreme freezing temperatures have passed. Be sure and plant in sandy, loamy soil.
These sweet onions require a lot of fertilizer. Researchers recommend a heavy application of 10-34-0 at plan ting time with a top dressing of nitrogen every four weeks. Your onions should be ready for harvest in approximately four to five months.
Do not be disappointed if your onions are not as sweet as the South Georgia sweet onions you may now be enjoying. Only onions grown in sandy, loamy soil with a low sulfur content are as sweet as these.
(Note: The fertilizer 10-34-0 is not a common mixture. You may have to go directly to a fertilizer dealer and have it mixed.)

JW^ft Tern?
Many folks may remember a clump of Job's Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi) growing in the corner of their grandparent's yard. This old-fashioned grass is still grown as an ornamental as well as for its appealing fruit from which it gets its common name.
The seed, often known as "corn beads," are hard, shiny and range in color from white to gray. The seed's soft core can be removed and the "beads" can be strung on a thread for a necklace.
Some claim that the seed have "marvelous" properties. In fact, many infants grew up wearing a corn bead necklace because it was supposed to ward off teething pain.
The beads are edible and may be ground into flour which can be made into a nourishing but coarse bread. This bread is utilized in poverty stricken countries when food is scarce.
The seeds are known throughout the tropics as "po beads"; they were often used by the poor for rosaries and temple beads.
The grass is a perennial in the South but is grown as an annual in the North. It grows to a height of two or three feet and is advertised in many seed catalogs as an or namental grass.
