Equine Industry
The Georgia Horse Foundation is a non-profit research organization which was founded by horsemen representing all major horse breeds throughout Georgia. The Board of Trustees consists of 18 members who are knowledgeable about horses and who are active in many aspects such as breeding, racing, showing, harness, working cattle and simply pleasure.
The main objective of the Foundation is to provide basic research and recommend programs to horsemen

which will encourage and allow the horse industry to expand to the scope and vitality found in many states having more prosperous and valuable horse industries.
Such expansion would, of course, greatly increase the agricultural value of the industry by providing more jobs, expansion of feed crop

Wintertime Rain
Lowest In More
Than Ten Years
If the winter drought continues, water supplies throughout Georgia may be threatened, according to a weather expert.
Acting state climatologist in the Institute of Natural Resources at the University of Georgia, G. L. Plummer said, "Although drought conditions have been with us for several months, they became most noticeable in December."
Rainfall around Clayton was 5.6 inches short during December; Dahlonega was 4.7 inches short; and Rome 4.3 inches below normal. Middle Georgia was at least 3 inches less than usual; southwest Georgia, 3 to 4 inches short and southeastern parts of the state 2 to 3 inches below normal.
During January the severity of the winter drought increased. Record low precipitation occurred in Atlanta, Athens, Augusta and other parts of north Georgia. South Georgia received 25 to 50 percent normal rainfall.

Phony Exterminators Surface

When Termites Start Swarming

In the spring many people will see the most common indication of termites - a

swarm of hundreds of flying insects around their home. If you see a swarm you

may have problems, but your problems could be much worse if you deal with a

"fly-by-night" exterminator.

Grandpa's

The majority of termite and pest control companies in Georgia are lic-

Garden

ensed and reputable. There are, however, some bogus operators who

will take your money and run. Be

wary of people who knock on your

door late at night or telephone with

deals "too good to be true".

Here are some steps to help you

choose a pest control company.

"Purple Martin enthusiasts sh-
ould be getting their gourds in shape for the 1981 season," according to Jack Barber. "My sister Catherine
Day and I continue our Martin hobby with our plastic gourds and hope that other Martin enthusiasts will write us when they spot their first
Martin of the 1981 season." If you would like to write these
folks, their address is P.O. Box 3973, Hill Station, Augusta 30904.
For new readers, Purple Martins are insect eating birds that "come home" every year to the same place. Besides being an interesting hobby, attracting Martins to your home will
greatly reduce bugs in your yard.

Ask for identification. Each salesman of a licensed pest control company should be able to present state issued identification card attesting to his authorization as a company representative. If you want to be sure an exterminator is licensed before you sign a contract, call Ag Consumer Line at 1-800-282-5852 or 6563645 in Atlanta.
Read the fine print. Many homeowners believe that signing a pest control contract will end their worries about termites and other insects. This is not always true. Contracts vary according to the type pest to be controlled. A service con-

The Foundation seeks to work closely with the Department of Agriculture both in finding problem areas and helping to find solutions.
The University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine has received support with promotion of horse care seminars and the Foundation will expand this activity by funding future studies into equine health problems such as parasite control and broader vaccination for encephalitis prevention.
Also planned is a program designed to encourage larger production of alfalfa hay in Georgia as a means of providing less costly feed than imported varieties.
Membership in the Foundation is open to all citizens of Georgia who are interested in horses and your support is solicited.

An extended dry period ahead is very probable. Adequate rainfall in February and March will depend on the location of the Bermuda-highpressure system. If it remains over Louisiana, drought conditions are likely to remain.
BOUNDARY LINE
One of the most important things a forest landowner can do is locate and mark his boundary lines. Cooperative Extension Service specialists say it's a good idea to inspect land lines each year. They point out that failure to maintain property lines could result in deliberate or accidential timber theft or encroachment.
