Ag Curriculum
Southeast Georgia is one of the
most outstanding agriculture and
forestry regions in Georgia and the
nation, noted for a wide variety of
food, fiber and timber products.
Until recent times, however, little
has been done
locally to offer
academic pro-
grams at the col-
lege level for
students in-
terested
in
agriculture and
forestry.
Although the
most comprehen-
sive studies are still at institutions in
other parts of the state, agriculture
and forestry oriented programs have
been added in southeast Georgia at
Georgia Southern College.
Among the new programs are an
agribusiness emphasis, more than 20

options in pre-agriculture and preforestry and a pre-veterinary medicine program.
For the agribusiness option, the student pursues a four-year program in business, selecting elective courses in agriculture and Agribusiness. Excellent career opportunities are availble for agribusiness graduates in fields related to agriculture, including those involved with farming, forestry, transportation, distribution, marketing, processing of farm products and banking and credit agencies.
Students electing a pre-agriculture or pre-forestry program begin their college career at Georgia Southern and transfer to an appropriate fouryear agricultural or forestry institution to complete their last two years for a degree in agriculture or
forestry. The pre-agriculture program op-
tions include agricultural economics, education, extension, journalism, agronomy, animal science, food science, general agriculture, horticulture, plant

og consumer line...
I purchased a can of chicken noodle soup and it was so salty that I could not eat it. Are there any requirements regarding salt content in this product? Enclosed is the label in case you want to check out the product.
K. E. Alpharetta The information on the label you submitted indicated that the product probably did have a salty flavor. Salt was sixth in the ingredient listing, indicating that it was the sixth most predominant item by weight. Since all ingredients are listed in this manner, you may want to check the labels carefully. Products are now on the market which reflect consumer interest in lower sodium levels. Additionally, products must meet specifications for contents set by law, but the individual producers may season as they see fit. You may wish to try another brand or let the manufacturer of this product know your sentiments about their product.

What should I do to control prickly pears in my pasture? L. S. Blythe

Ground covers can be planted year round in the lower half of Georgia and most of the upper section of the state. However, the best time to plant them is in the fall. Fall planting is encouraged because the need for water is reduced and plants have time to establish new roots before hot weather.
Ground covers are ideal for planting on banks and slopes to control erosion. They also can be used in areas too shady to support growth of grasses. Among the recommended varieties for Georgia are English ivy, ajuga, dwarf liriope, and mondo grass.

Dear Editor Last year there was a picture of a man and his kudzu
Christmas wreath in the Market Bulletin. His name was Jesse Rodgers. I would like for him to write me right away concerning how he made his wreaths. I have to give a demonstration November 19 to our garden club on wreaths and I think that the kudzu wreath would be an interesting, unique addition.

Agricultural seed and plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Seed Division of the Department of Agriculture, 656-3633.

GSC Expands Ag Curriculum
(Continued from Page 1)
pathology / plant genetics, poultry science, agriculture engineering, agricultural mechanization, environmental health, and entomology.
The pre-forestry curriculum leads to a degree program with optics in timber management and utilization, forest water resources, fish and wildlife biology, forest resources
planning and administration and forestry science.
In addition to the college curriculum, Georgia Southern College also has developed other programs and services to assist those in the agricultural and forestry industries.
For example, the East Georgia Extension Center of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is located on the campus and serves the 36 counties of southeast Georgia. A new poultry diagnostic laboratory is operated on campus by the Georgia Poultry Improvement Association and research programs in agriculture and forestry involving ticks and mites, plant growth and development and peanuts are underway.
Also in cooperation with the East Georgia Extension Center, the
University of Georgia and others, Georgia Southern College has expanded its special public service programs, conference and meeting facilities, continuing education programming, and consulting services to better serve the agriculture and forestry needs in the southeast Georgia.
In an effort to provide additional programs and services to serve further the important agriculture and forestry industries of southeast Georgia, Georgia Southern College has created a new office of agriculture and natural resources.
