The association promotes agricultural economics through awards for alumni, faculty, students and agricultural leaders. Our longrange plans include endowment of chairs of agricultural finance, agricultural cooperation and agricultural marketing.
In August of this year the association entered into a fund raising effort with the University of Georgia Foundation to create scholarships and further advance special programs in the agricultural economics division.
We promote agricultural 3conomics through forums held throughout the state such as the tour md workshop in June at our summer meeting in Albany.
Through our newsletter we reach 2100 users of agricultural economics information.

Net Farm Income Lowest on Record

The 1980 crop year has the distinction of producing the lowest net farm income since record keeping began on these figures in 1949. In 1979 net farm income was $11,454 per farm - in 1980 it was only $705 per farm.
Livestock, poultry and poultry products were responsible for 55 percent of the cash receipts in 1980. Commercial broilers maintained their lead as the main source of cash farm income.
Crop sales amounted to only 43 percent of the total for 1980, down 12 percent from 1979.

I do wish one of your inspectors could catch the store down the street from my house selling eggs with expired dates.
F. L. Albany Thanks to your call an inspector went to the store and found 60 dozen of eggs with expired dates. The eggs were 10 days out-of-date and have been removed from sale. The store manager was informed of requirements concerning egg dating and he promised to be more careful in the future. ****
My well water smells like gasoline and I am afraid to drink it. Does the Department of Agriculture have a laboratory where my water can be checked?
M. B. Mauk Water from your private well may be checked by the local county health department in Taylor County. ****
Please identify the enclosed grass. It came from an unidentified bag of seed bought at a sale. I planned to use it for bird seed, but planted it instead. The birds love it.
R. M. Suwanee Our plant specialist identified your sample as Enchinochloa commonly called barnyard grass. It was introduced from Europe and is considered a bad weed throughout the United States and Mexico, especially on moist, rich soils. The stems are erect and the weed is easily distributed by seeds. It is sometimes called cockspur grass because of the long "Beard" or sticky awn attached to the seed.

Dear Editor

Could you please run a picture of a stink weed in the MARKET BULLETIN? I have smelled stink weed and have talked with others who also have, but have never seen one or do not recognize it when I do.

(Editor's Note: Stink weed or jimson weed is a ranksmelling, thick, short plant found throughout the state usually in livestock pens and on dumping grounds. The seed pods of the weed are egg shaped and covered with short, sharp spines. Both the seed and the plant are poisonous to man and animals.)

Dear Editor
I would like to hear from readers who have had any experience using a hydro drill. I am interested in obtaining one, but would like some advice and information on it before I invest.

Dear Editor
The Cobb County Youth Museum needs someone to donate or loan an old fashioned churn, a bale of cotton and some cotton bolls.
If anyone has these items, please call the museum at 404-427-2563.

Dear Editor. As has been discussed several times in the pages
of the MARKET BULLETIN, white powder boric acid is effective against roaches. However, it is distressing that several companies are marketing this relatively inexpensive powder under fancy-sounding brand names and charging two or three times what it should cost.
It is usually an advertisement to order by mail $7.95 plus postage and handling" for one pound. This same substance can be obtained by simply asking for boric acid powder at any drug store; if they don't have it in stock, they can order it, and for much less than $7.95.

LEAF SCORCH Leaf scorch is a common problem with dogwoods this
time of year. It usually shows up when soil moisture is limited and temperatures soar. Extension Service specialists explain: High temperatures force rapid transpiration, or moisture loss from the leaves; roots are unable to replenish the lost moisture because of limited reserves in the soil. Watering dogwoods during periods of low rainfall will help. So will mulching.

TOASTER OVENS One of the most versatile and convenient portable appliances on the market today is the toaster/broiler oven, says Ilene Dailey, Extension Service home economist in housing and home furnishings. "These little appliances are big when it comes to the number of jobs they can do, she says. "They toast, bake, broil, and roast; and some of the newer models even slow-cook." Dailey says the key to choosing a toaster oven is its usability. "What functions do you want the appliance to perform?"
SELF-CLEANING A self-cleaning oven is more economical to operate than a manual one, says Ilene Dailey, Cooperative Extension Service home economist. She explains that because extra insulation is required for self-cleaning ovens, heat is retained longer. "To take advantage of existing heat, wait until you've just finished cooking a meal to clean the oven," Daily advises. "And try to schedule cleaning time in the evening when there is less demand for electricity."
TRY CELERY Celery has only five calories per eight-inch stalk. So if you are on a diet, try munching a little celery instead of crackers or potato chips, advise food and nutrition specialists with the Georgia Extension Service.

Yo-Yo Quilts Remain Popular

The yo-yo quilt is completely different from pieced or appliqued quilts. It is an assembly of circles joined to form an airy and delicate coverlet or canopy cover.
Accuracy is very important in making yo-yos. If they are not all the same size, the finished product will not be attractive.
Cut a circular template exactly twice as large as you want your finished circle, suggested size four inches.
For perfect curves, use curved scissors.
Turn under V inch hem on fabric circles and baste; do not cut thread. Draw up running stitches tightly. Secure thread firmly and press gathered circle flat. Join circles in strips or blocks to desired size. Yo-yos require no further quilting.

This Is Georgia
Blue-green pines, Cool to the eye. Though noon day sun Sends temperatures high. From this place I marvel at clay, Orange to red, Purple to grey. Lush kudzu vines Cover and hide Mysterious creatures, All tongue-tied. Knarled dogwood Intersperses oak, Shielding a bluebird While blue/ays joke: "We've robbed a nest! Blame it on Redbreast!" (But Georgians know The "Jay" is a crow.) Vying with the cardinal Azalea, fiery-red Tell us Spring is here. Winter is dead. This is Georgia In all its glory, Where nature tells Its loveliest story.
Anne C. Cronin Atlanta, Ga.

Woodlands

trend to continue because of the attractive timber resources the state offers industry.

All 159 counties in Georgia have some pulpwood production. The top five counties were Burke - 161,752 cords; Laurens - 158,764 cords; Stewart - 128,263 cords; Crawford - 124,263 cords, and Clinch with 116,619.
Sixteen pulp mills, with a total capacity of 16,700 tons per day, currently operate in Georgia, according to Nelson Brightwell, head of the Extension forest resources department.

Georgia also is one of the leading states in sawtimber production and is the top producer of gum naval stores, providing over 80 percent of the national supply.

It is easy to see why in the last ten years, Georgia forests have managed to sup-
ply the timber needs of almost 15 million people -11 million more than the population of the state, according to the Extension service.

The Georgia Forestry Commission anticipates a decrease in forest acreage this year. This decrease will pro-bably result from the urban
growth along with industrial and residential development of existing forest land.

Last year, Georgia forests were faced with the major threat of Southern pine beetle infestation. Currently, the pest is not a major problem and only a few areas in northeast Georgia are infested.

Forest tires continue to be one of the greatest threats to Georgia forests. Since January of this year, the state has had 14,300 fires, according to the Ga. Forestry Commission. This figure is above average due to the extremely dry spring the state experienced. Debris burning continues to be the number one cause of forest fires.

Although there has been a

increase in forest fires this

year, Georgia forests con-

tinue to be the best protected

in the nation, according to

the Forestry Commission.

This statement is proven

by the fact that the average

size of forest fires so far this

year have been held to six

acres. This has been possible

due to prompt action taken

by

the

Forestry

Commission's forest protec-

tion department along with

the help of forest industries

and interested land owners.

I would like to complain about the way meat is wrapped in the super-

markets the fact that the customer can only see one side of the meat when

it is in the tray. So many times I get home with what looks like a good cut of

meat, only to find the underside to be excessively fat or contain a bone which

was not visible from the top. Can't the laws be changed so that meat will have

to be wrapped so it can be seen on both sides?

L. M.

Griffin

A store tried this once wrapping the steaks, sliced ham, etc., in a clear

plastic wrap so the customer could see both sides, but it was not satisfac-

tory, because the styrofoam trays protect the meat better and keep it from

appearing "handled." Georgia has a law stating that products cannot be

packaged in a deceptive way. For example, not stating "bone in" meat on

the package, when the meat has a bone, is against the law if the bone is not

visible to the customer. If you have a complaint about a specific store

packaging meat deceptively, let us know and we will be glad to check the

situation out.

I believe the store has added something to my ground beef to keep it red. I bought the meat on Thursday and on Monday the meat was still as bright as it was when I purchased it. The meat had not been kept in an airtight container so it would not have been sealed from air. I am returning the product to the store so one of your inspectors can pick it up. Please let your chemist run tests on it to see if any preservatives have been added.
S. R. Sugar Valley Two sulfite tests were conducted to see if preservatives had been added to the meat. Both tests were negative. According to the assistant manager at the store where you made your purchase they had recently received some lean ground beef with an extremely bright bloom. We are forwarding you a copy of a publication on commonly asked questions about hamburger which we hope you will find informative.

I have been using the same type of plain meal for years and have stored it in the same gallon jar. A five pound bag of meal does not nearly fill up the jar
as it used to. The jar seems to be 2-3 cups short. F. B. Rome
Random packages of the same type meal you use was weighed. The five pound bags our inspector weighed were between 5.06 to 5.14 pounds.

Cablegation Offers

Irrigation Option

The extensive drought conditions that have plagued areas across the state over the past three growing seasons have promoted many Georgia farmers to consider irrigation. While the number of irrigated acres continues to increase, many farmers have not been able to irrigate due to high installation and operational costs.

"Cablegation," a new energysaving, automatic surface irrigation system has recently been developed by USDA researchers. The system eventually may provide farmers with a low cost, efficient alternative to sprinkler irrigation systems.

A major cost in surface irrigation farming is the labor required for irrigation. Sprinkler irrigation systems have decreased labor requirements and increased the uniformity of water application. However, energy required to pump water through sprinkler systems generally accounts for more than half the energy used on a farm.
The cablegation system utilizes gravity in order to automatically deliver water to the furrows, eliminating high energy costs (energy requirements so far have been less than 10 kilowatt hours per year). The system also costs less to install than sprinkler systems. Current calculations estimate that the cost in establishing a cablegation system is approximately $3,580 (assuming a 400 meter headline is used).

Maintenance costs and longevity

for the system are difficult to predict.

Recent figures indicate cablegation

maintenance will run approximately

$71 a year.

In early studies, cablegation has

proven to be low in cost and labor. It

seems to offer farmers the best of

both irrigation methods

the

uniform water application of

sprinkler systems and the energy ef-

ficiency of gravity flow systems.

For additional information concerning the costs and installation of the cablegation system, contact Dr. W. D. Kemper, SEA Snake Conservation Research Center, Route 1, Box 186, Kimberly, Idaho 83341.

Contribute Decorations
For Ga. Christmas Tree
Decorating the official state Christmas tree with crocheted snowflakes and red ribbons has become a beautiful tradition at the Georgia Capitol. The handmade snowflakes are donated by senior citizens from all over Georgia.
Anyone wishing to contribute snowflakes for the Christmas tree should mail them to Liz Carmichael Jones, Office of the Secretary of State, Room 214, State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Patterns and instructions for the crocheted snowflakes are available from the same office.
The state Christmas tree is a joint program of the Georgia Building Authority and the Secretary of State's office.

Grandpa's
Garden
If you want your poinsettias to blossom for Christmas, now is the time to place the plants on a shortday, long night schedule. You should keep the plants in total darkness from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. starting in September and ending around Thanksgiving.
Ten hours of daylight each day is plenty for the poinsettia. Any artificial light coming from overhead lights, or even street lights could delay flowering so total darkness is essential. Placing a black plastic sheet around poinsettias is an excellent way to shut out artificial light for a long night schedule.
No other perennial can add so much variation of color and blossom type in the fall (after blossoming period of most flowers has passed) than chrysanthemums. Hardy mums now can be planted from containers to provide beautiful color in your flower garden this month and October.
Mums like loose, sandy soil that is neutral or slightly acid, lots of sun and good drainage. Be sure and work plenty of humus such as compost or well rotted manure into the soil before transplanting.
Give your houseplants a bath at least twice a month. House plants can be cleaned with two tablespoons of mild liquid soap added to Vi gallon of water at room temperature. Not only will this remove dust which often accumulates on houseplants, it will also discourage bugs.
If your houseplants get scale, dip a cotton swab in alcohol and rub the plant with it to get rid of them.
Do not blame bees, wasps, and yellow jackets for damage you may find in your muscadine grapes or scuppernongs. These insects do not damage sound fruit, but are attracted to the vines by fruit that has popped open due to certain weather conditions.
When a long drought is followed by heavy rains late in the season, grapes tend to build up pressure, pop open and drop to the ground.

Honor Grandparents

-Bulletin Calendar*

On Their Special Day
Grandparents are special all year round, however, September 13 has been set aside to show them a little extra recognition and attention.
National Grandparents Day, started by Atlantan Mike Goldgar, became official in 1978 after President Jimmy Carter signed a resolution proclaiming it a national holiday. The nation's "newest" holiday is observed each year in September on the Sunday after Labor Day.
This special holiday gives us the opportunity to let our grandparents know how much they are loved and appreciated.
If you are a grandparent or senior citizen with extra time on your hands, you might consider becoming involved in the Foster Grandparent Program.
The program, established in 1965, brings together grandparents and physically or mentally handicapped children. Daily, 82 volunteers in the Atlanta area, for example, provide four hours of individual attention to children at six volunteer stations including Grady Hospital, Ga. Retardation Center, Egleston, Ga. Regional Hospital, Cerebral Palsy Center, and EOA Child Development Center. Volunteers receive a modest stipend for their service.
To qualify for the Foster Grandparent Program, applicants must be at least 60 years of age and have lowincome pensions. Inquiries concerning the Atlanta program should be mailed to Foster Grandparent Program, Equal Opportunity of Atlanta, Inc., 75 Marietta St., Atlanta 30303.
If there is not a Foster Grandparent program in your area, a local church or civic organization might be interested in establishing a similar program.
READ, HEED LABEL The pesticide user has only one source of information on pesticide use that fully satisfies enforcement authorities, say Extension Service entomologists. That one source is the pesticide label. Regardless of any oral or written instructions from any individual or institution, anyone who uses a pesticide in a manner that is inconsistent with the labeling for that specific product is in violation of both federal and state pesticide laws, according to the entomologists.

Protect Ga. Wildlife Learn How to Tackle

Over 158,000 acres of wildlife habitat have been preserved by Georgians concerned about the future of our wild heritage. This land has been enrolled in the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Acres For Wildlife program.
Acres For Wildlife Cover Agents,
participants in the program, have enrolled over 340 plots for a variety of wildlife species including deer, quail, furbearers, snakes, and turtles.
Plots vary in size from an acre to several thousand acres and take the form of odd corners in backyards, beaver ponds, small woodlots fence rows and large forested tracts.
All Cover Agents are supplied with
signs to identify their plots and receive shoulder patch, certificate and an Acres For Wildlife Calendar.
If you are interested in knowing how you can contribute to the future of Georgia's wildlife and plant species, simply mail your request along with a self-addressed, stamped (business size) envelope to: Terry W. Johnson, Georgia Acres For Wildlife, Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area, Route 3, Box 180, Forsyth 31029.
