FHA Provides
Youth Energy
During a recent officers workshop, the 1981-82 state executive council selected the 1981 theme "Future Homemakers-Youth Energy Unlimited!"
Although our country may be facing many energy shortages,
Future Homemakers of America believe there is no shortage of energy in our most valuable resource youth.
Because most young people are not fully aware of their own potential, members are encouraged to look at the impact they can make on their family, school, and communities.
Our guest columnist this week is Becky
Potterson, State President, Georgia Assoc-
iation, Future Homemakers of America,
Dahlonego 30533.)__________ __
They can learn creative and constructive ways to use youth energy by replacing apathy with involvement in all phases of life, especially in FHA/HERO chapter activities.
Local chapters are encouraged to plan in-depth projects that will channel personal leadership potential and youth energy into constructive areas.
Many exciting projects were selected by the state executive council to be emphasized throughout the school year. The project I am most excited about is "FHA National Headquarters - Under Construction."
At age thirty-five Future Homemakers of America are building a new home. This permanent National Headquarters and Leadership Center will be a bold forward-moving image for Future Homemakers.
The headquarters will be built 19 miles outside of Washington, D.C., in Reston, Virginia's Center for Educational Associations. Eight top national organizations, including two other vocational youth organizations, are located there already.
This project will involve many people besides Future Homemakers

I bought what I thought to be three plain chicken breasts; however, they had ribs and split backs attached. The label clearly stated "chicken breasts". I took the mislabeled meat back to the store and was offered six breasts. I still want to know if any state law was violated.
J.C. Rossville
You were wise in noticing the meat you purchased labeled as "chicken breasts" had ribs and split backs attached, as this is against the law. If the ribs and backs are attached it should be so stated on the label. Although you did not mention the name or location of the store we will be more than happy to investigate this matter if you call us.

Successful in Georgia

While brucellosis is certainly bad news for livestock producers, there is

good news in knowing Georgia has gained headway in controlling and eradicat-

ing the dreaded disease.

Brucellosis, sometimes called

Feeding Time

Bang's disease, is an infectious bacterial disease of cattle and swine which may be transmitted to all

warm blooded animals, including humans. Called undulant fever, brucellosis in humans is usually con-

Feeding hay to pregnant cows during the evening hours may cause a higher percentage to calve during daylight hours, according to recent experiments at the University of Georgia Department of Animal and Dairy Science.
Regardless of feeding time, the preliminary studies indicate that the greatest percentage of cows calved during daylight hours (76 percent from 6 am to 6 pm). However, when access to hay was restricted from 7 pm to 7 am, 95 percent of the cows calved during daylight hours.
Despite these findings, specialists do not recommend eliminating night checking of pregnant heifers.
Using this practice may allow cattlemen to do a better job calving out cows as well as to increase percent calf crop. "If a cow is going to have calving problems, a cattleman would much rather the cow to calve during daylight hours so that he can assist should problems arise," explained Dr. Terry Kiser, professor of animal science, University of Georgia.

tracted by coming in direct contact with diseased animals. It is considered one of the most costly diseases of farm animals.
Georgia is getting closer to the
goal of total eradication. As of June of this year, only \ 10 herds had been quarantined because of brucellosis. This is a significant drop compared to 1976 figures when the state was among 12 southeastern states responsible for more than 90 percent of all brucellosis in the nation's cattle.
Last year, Georgia was cited by the United States Secretary of Agriculture for its intensive brucellosis program and significant strides towards eradicating the disease.
The state's successful attack on brucellosis is a result of intensive state and federal eradication programs including area testing, contact herd testing, quarantines, depopulation, and retesting of quarantined herds. *

Dear Editor:

Does anyone know where I might purchase whole

English peas? All I can find are split. The government

gave these peas away in the depression in the '30's

and they are delicious. For a while I could buy them

canned (they had been canned in Georgia) but I have

forgotton where.

Anyone who can give me any information on these

peas will have my undying gratitude.

'Weathering 7 the Hot Summer With Old Fashioned Folklore

Weather is a universal subject. It was once said, "everybody talks about the weather but no one does anything about it." While we certainly cannot control the weather, weatherlore gives people an opportunity to try their hand in weather prediction.

Most weatherlore developed from observations of certain signs that were handed down from generation to generation. While some weather signs have actually been proven and are worth practicing, a lot of weatherlore should simply be an entertaining pastime.
There are hundreds of weather signs and we have included just a sample of weatherlore sent in by some of our readers.
"I've heard about weather signs all my life," writes Bessie Braswell of Cairo. "One sign is, if you see lightning on Sunday night or Wednesday, it will rain nearby within three days."
"A morning rain is like an old woman's dance," she added, "it won't last long."
"Watching weather signs is interesting and exciting," emphasized Mrs. H. W. Fuller of Gainesville. She claims that fireflies can be observed in the summer to predict the weather. "If they fly freely and high into the trees there is likely to be no rain ... if they stay at lower levels, rain is likely."
"Weeds covered with misty spider webs are a sign that there will be no showers for that day," Mrs. Fuller

added. "Back in the olden days my
mother and grandmother used to say that a June bug flying close to the ground was a sure sign of rain," writes Mrs. Charlie Hayes of Rockmart.
Mr. Whitaker of Rutledge uses a handy little verse to predict the weather: Rainbow at night (late afternoon) Sailor's delight Rainbow in morning Sailors take warning
Mrs. Paul Wofford of Marble Hill shared some of her favorite weatherlore with us:
"When the family cat sees all kinds of imaginary 'boogers,' runs and catches them and has a mean look in his eyes, it is going to be windy."
"Thunder before seven, rain before eleven."
"If cattle graze during rain, it will rain on; if they wait out the rain it will soon stop. Livestock standing with their backsides turned toward the wind also is a sign that bad weather is in store."
Finally, Mrs. Wofford claims that when you hear a crow or tree frog hollering or a red bird chattering, you can expect a lot of rain.

Attack on Brucellosis

(Continued From Page 1)

There also has been excellent cooperation between state and federal agriculture officials and the livestock industry. For the past five years, additional efforts have been made to keep the livestock industry informed; as a result, livestock producers feel more a part of eradication measures.
However, the closer the state gets to total eradication of the disease, the harder it becomes, according to officials.
Currently, the biggest obstacle preventing total elimination of the disease is Georgia's interchange of livestock with Florida, which has one of the highest records of brucellosis in the nation.
The cut in indemnities paid for brucellosis affected cattle in May has had little influence on eradication efforts.
The reduction in funds has limited depopulation to only on a very selective basis, however, other brucellos-

is programs have not been hurt.
Since there is no known cure for the disease, the key to brucellosis eradication still lies in prevention.
While there is no way to tell infected cattle by appearance, symptoms such as abortion, birth of weak calves, and discharges may be strong indications of brucellosis. Affected herds can have up to 40 percent fewer calves. Decreased milk production in dairy cattle and weight loss in meat animals also may be symptoms.
If a cattleman suspects the disease in his herd, he should contact a practicing veterinarian or a Georgia Department of Agriculture official immediately and have his herd tested.
Not only will the accomplishment of total elimination of brucellosis save the cattle industry millions of dollars annually, it will also reduce the risks of human brucellosis or undulant fever, as well.

There is a store in my neighborhood that pays food stamp recipients cash money for food stamps, i.e., for 100 dollars worth of food stamps he will give you $75.00. What can be done about this?
