Limousin Breed
Growing in Go.
Limousin is currently one of the fastest growing breeds of beef cattle in the United States. The area that has shown the most rapid increase of Limousin cattle has been the Southeast.
The Georgia Limousin Association started in September of 1975 with
twelve members. In the ensuing six years, we have grown to approximately seventy members. The Georgia Limousin Association is involved in promoting the breed throughout the state of Georgia.
Limousin cattle are native to the south central part of France where

the region is rugged and rolling with a rocky soil. These golden red cattle spend the majority of their time out of'doors year round in the harsh climate of the region.
The first Limousin bulls imported to the United States arrived in the fall of 1971, but semen was available from Canada after July of 1969. In just ten short years, the Limousin breed has grown from one bull to just over a quarter of a million cattle.
More and more exhibitors are choosing Limousin cattle to show in their local county and state steer and heifer shows. And in show after show, the choice of a Limousin Grand Champion is providing strong evidence of the respect judges have for our breed. In the 1981 Georgia State Steer Show the Grand Champion in Average Daily Gain (ADG) was an 87 percent Limousin, who broke the previous record of 3.78 with a 4.22 ADG. Also, the Reserve Grand Champion Average Daily Gain was a 75 percent Limousin, again breaking the record.

Use of Ripening Agent Versatile Georgia Apples
Lowers Tobacco Value
Georgia tobacco farmers using chemical ripening agents on their crop are lowering the price they receive at the auction sales.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said the use of a chemical ripening agent to turn the leaf yellow prior to full maturity was utilized by farmers concerned with the stress tobacco was showing during the recent heat wave.
"Although the chemicals do change the color of the leaves, there is still a green tinge that buyers recognize instantly as associated with immature tobacco. Tobacco that would have sold for $1.90 per Ib. has brought only $1.50 to $1.60 per Ib.," Irvin said.
Since most of the state has received moisture and a break in the hot, dry weather, Irvin urged that tobacco farmers allow their crops to mature naturally.
"We have one of the best tobacco crops ever," Irvin said, "and buyers are going to be on hand until all of it is sold, so farmers shouldn't try to hurry the marketing process."
Learn and Teach
Gardening Skills
The Metro-Atlanta Master gardener program is a course designed to teach participants basic horticultural skills which will enable them to teach others. The 1981 program will be conducted September 8 November 5 at the North Fulton Government Annex auditorium. Sessions for the program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 p.m.
The program will be taught by County Extension staff members and subject related specialists from the University Extension service.
Enrollment for the program is limited to 205 persons. There will be a $25 materials fee upon acceptance to the program. Applications for the program can be obtained by calling the county Extension agent in your area (Cobb County, 429-3330; Clayton County, 478-9911; DeKalb Co., 371-2821; Fulton Co., 393-4670; and Gwinnett Co., 962-1480).
Ready for You to Enjoy
Apple season has arrived in Georgia. Besides being a delicious, versatile fruit, apples are an important money crop to many Georgia fruit growers. Dollarwise, the state's apple crop generated over $4.4 million dollars in 1980.
Swine Fever Threat
Prompts U.S. Aid
The Haitian government and the International Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture recently signed a formal agreement authorizing a multi-nation effort to eradicate African swine fever on the Caribbean Island. The program, funded by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, will cost over $17 million and require up to two years to complete.
Earlier this year, USDA declared an animal health emergency because of the threat of the fever spreading from Haiti to the United States.
African swine fever is a highly contagious swine disease which has already cost Cuba a half-million hogs and the Dominican Republic its entire swine population.
Harvest of apples began in middle Georgia in late July and will continue hi the state through September. Georgia is the first state with a large volume of apples on the market. More than 50 percent of the crop is shipped out of state for other markets and for further processing.
Over 24 percent of the apple crop has been harvested, according to recent Georgia Crop Reporting Service figures. This year's harvest is running ahead of schedule. Last year at this time only 18 percent of the crop had been gathered.
Georgia is expected to produce more than 40 million pounds of
apples this year. This is an increase of six million pounds compared with 1980 production figures.
Apple growers are anticipating a good crop this year, according to Dr. Maurice Ferree, educational advisor for the Georgia Apple Council. "The heat held back the size and color of apples in some areas, but it certainly hasn't influenced the quality," he emphasized.

I run a gift shop and wish to buy ferns and other house plants to decorate and sell. Do I need a special permit?
T.J. Atlanta Since you will be selling what is referred to as soft-bodied plants, you will not need a license.
What is running okra? Is it edible? J.H.
Brunswick Running okra is a southern name for Luffa, a tendril-climbing herb. Other common names include, rag gourd, dish-cloth gourd, and vegetable sponge. The fruit may be eaten when young, being cooked like squash and served in soups and stews. The young fruit is sometimes sliced and dried. Today, running okra is mostly grown for ornamental purposes. The interior of the dried fruit is very fibrous and when bleached and prepared is used as a bath or scrubbing sponge.

Grandpa's Garden
A tree loaded with apples is a wonderful sight unless the branches are so overloaded that they threaten to break.
You can remedy this problem by supporting the bough. Cut a sturdy pole a few inches longer than the height of the burdened limb and nail a strip of rubber tire on top of it. Force the bottom of the prop into the ground directly under the branch. Wrap the rubber around the branch and tie it securely in place. This sling will not chafe the tree and will help support the limb until harvest.
Ralph Amann of Brunswick claims that by using a homemade, stuffed "cat," you can keep birds and squirrels out of your garden or vineyard.
"Take a dark, old sock and stuff it with newspapers (rolled up about four inches in diameter) from the toe to the heel. Use nylon fishing line to tie the open end shut and to tie the heel where the newspaper ends. The sock should end up resembling a cat," explained Mr. Amann.
"Find a place in the top of your grapevines to hang the "cat" or hang it on a post in your garden. I use this tactic and have had no problems with squirrels eating my tomatoes or birds eating my grapes," according to Mr. Amann.
Vinegar is a useful household item which can be used in making a preservative for cut flowers. Mix two tablespoons of white vinegar and two teaspoons of cane sugar in a quart of water. Use this mixture in your vase instead of plain water.

W. C. Griggs of Pinehurst, cotton farmer, ginner, and warehouseman, grins broadly as he leans on the bale of cotton he won at the Georgia Cott on Promotion Day activities. Griggs' name was drawn from among 800 names of people registered and attending the annual event held at the Dooley County Campgrounds near Vienna.
Limousin Breed
(Continued From Page 1) breeders, and the ability of the Limousin mother cow to "bring in" a superior market animal is recognized.
The Limousin breed has a long tradition of being the butchers' animal. Limousin cross carcasses are leaner with larger rib eyes, higher dressing percentages and more yield than other crosses. With the current trend towards leaner beef that is more economical to produce, Limousin is a must in every crossbreeding program.
No matter what you read from any breed publication or any research paper, the best proof is in the production of the cows. The best way to find out about the Limousin breed is to go and talk to your neighbors who have incorporated Limousin into their herd programs.
