Varied Research
At Mtn. Station
The program of work at this Station located in Union County near Blairsville is diversified. It includes agronomy, horticulture, animal science, plant pathology, and entomology.
Research by scientists from the main experiment stations is design-
ed to serve the agricultural needs of farmers of the mountain and surrounding counties. However, some research has statewide and regional application. To further I serve the needs of the people, demonstrations are conducted by specialists from the Extension Service. The Station's programs are enhanced by support from TVA and cooperation from the local agricultural

agencies. Research information is distributed through publications, short courses, field days, exhibits, and personal requests.
Management studies of fescue include clipping height, clip frequency, stockpiling and fertility treatments. The objective of this research is to produce good yields of high quality forage with emphasis on keeping the fescue plant green.
Quality of forage is improved by growing legumes with fescue. Species and varieties of legumes are evaluated annually. Plant breeders utilize the cold winter temperatures to evaluate genetic materials for winter hardiness. Tifton 44 bermuda was selected from a mass planting of hybrids.
Corn studies include no-till plant-
ing and hybrid performance for grain and silage. Soybean studies underway are herbicides, response to lime and micronutrients and varietal performance. Sorghum investigations include varietal evaluation of grain and syrup types and breeding of lines for acid soils.

With Tobacco Cut Swine Production Benefits
Commissioner of Agriculture

Agriculture, Bob Bergland, to re-

partment of Agriculture. Irvin said it was his opinion that
both domestic and foreign market needs could best be met and the farmer could best be served through a marketing system that would put emphasis on upper stalk, higher quality tobacco.
Market needs and farmer interests would be better served if lower stalk, poor quality tobacco were left in the field and never harvested, according to Commissioner Irvin.
"As competition on foreign' markets grows stronger, we need to offer an even better quality to foreign buyers," Irvin said.
In light of conditions in the Georgia swine industry and agriculture in general, the strategies for survival and growth in 1981 should emphasize improvements in four major areas: reproduction and feed efficiency, efficiency of labor and swine facility utilization, feed costs per pound of pork, and energy efficiency in swine facilities.
These are the areas where the average Georgia pork producer most often falls short of reasonable goals. These factors also represent the greatest potential improvements in pork production economics which mainly involve changes in management and not necessarily capital investments.
In many cases pork producers could improve their financial outlook without additional indebtedness.
(feed/lb. gain) are tied very closely together. The goal is to increase the number of pigs marketed per sow maintained in the herd. This will directly reduce the sow and boar feed costs per pig marketed.
A reasonable goal for individual producers is 15-16 hogs marketed at 3.70 feed conversion. Top line producers are producing 20-22 hogs per sow per year with 3.50 feed conversion for the entire herd.

Dear Editor: When we lived in South Florida in the 1950's, many
people converted old refrigerators into smokers, for smoking fish, turkey, ham, etc.
I'm wondering if any of your readers could tell me how it is done. The information would really be welcomed.

plants tor sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are pro tected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. Varied Research
(Continued From Page 1)
Feasibility studies of overwintering steers on fescue-white clover pasture with different supplemental feeds continue with excellent acceptance by area cattlemen. Construction has begun on a swine facility which will be used to determine the economics of producing feeder pigs.
Apple work includes disease and insect control, varietal evaluation, apple breeding, growth regulators, tree training, and rootstock evaluation. A frost protection irrigation system was installed in some orchards during 1980.
Rabbiteye and highbush blueberry varieties are being selected for "pick-your-own" and roadside markets. French hybrid grapes are showing potential as a new crop for the area.
Varietal evaluations of adapted vegetable species are made annually. Vegetable species not commonly grown in the area are tested for adaptability and economic significance. Bell pepper studies include a national variety test, herbicides, ripening agents, and methods of growing transplants.
Several species of Christmas trees are being tested. This is an enterprise well suited for small and part-time farmers. Ornamental studies include fall planted bulbs, hybrid rhododendrons and wild flowers.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Quilting Small Pieces Uses
Cloth Scraps Efficiently
The six-pointed star appears complicated but actually it is a simple quilt to piece. The stars are made of twelve triangles, six print, six solid. For variety use different colors and prints in each star.
Farm Survival
(Continued From Page 1)
Producer time and labor can be directed toward those events which are more critical (breeding, farrowing, etc.) to economic success.
Most costs associated with owning and operating a particular swine facility are fairly constant regardless of the extent of use. A twenty crate farrowing house should have 20 sows farrowing in
(This is the fourth of several stories prepared by Cooperative Extension Service ex-
perts on the farm crisis.)___________
each group to reduce the fixed costs per pound of market hog.
With precise planning, excellent management and a little luck, full use of the facilities are possible. Breeding intentions must be adjusted for differences in conception rate due to season, sow-gilt differences and the existing average conception rates on a particular farm.
The movement of animals through a swine facility should be scheduled to make optimum use of existing space. Precise records are the key to smooth operation of a scheduled production system.
To assemble make one row of the star by piecing three print and two solid A units. Make another row of three solid and two print A units. Join these two rows together. Stitch a B unit to each side of this section. Join the C units to the two remaining A pieces and sew these two sections to the main part to complete the block.
Improved Feed Costs
The feed program of most Georgia swine operations is based on use of fortified corn and soybean meal rations for the major energy and protein sources.
Because of current feed costs, producers must become more aware of alternative feedstuffs which may provide more competitive costs of gain. It is anticipated that substitute feedstuffs will often result in some reduction in rate of gain and thereby some increases in fixed costs per hog. However, the potential reductions in feed costs may more than offset these fixed cost increases.
When purchasing grains or other feedstuffs, be aware of significant differences in quality or grades and avoid feeds that are seriously damaged by molds, insects or overdrying.
Barley, grain sorghum, wheat and triticale may be utilized in some phases of pork production. Various by-products may be locally available which offer potential as feed sources.
Each product should be evaluated on nutritional value, transportation and feed handling costs and the effects on price received for the market hogs.
Energy Efficiency
Many of the modern confinement swine facilities built in recent years are prime targets for trimming energy costs. Proper management of ventilation fans, heating devices and waste moving devices can significantly reduce energy costs while
still providing a desirable environment for pork production.
Over ventilation, especially in winter time, is the major source of energy waste. Proper waste management may reduce the energyrequired for removing wastes and their associated gases, humidity and odors.
These are some areas of pork production management which require little or no additional cash costs but may yield important economic benefits.
