FARMERS & CONSUMERS Tommy /rvin, Commissioner Georgia Department of Agriculture Market Bulletin Volume67, Number 1 FOR SUBSCRIPTION AND ADVERTISEMENT INFORMATION SEE PAGE 2 Wednesday, January?, 1981 Irvin Disagrees Farm Survival Varied Research At Mtn. Station The program of work at this Station located in Union County near Blairsville is diversified. It includes agronomy, horticulture, animal science, plant pathology, and entomology. Research by scientists from the main experiment stations is design- ed to serve the agricultural needs of farmers of the mountain and surrounding counties. However, some research has statewide and regional application. To further I serve the needs of the people, demonstrations are conducted by specialists from the Extension Service. The Station's programs are enhanced by support from TVA and cooperation from the local agricultural (Our guest columnist this week is J.W. Dobson, Jr., Superintendent, Georgia Moun- tain Branch Experiment Station, Blairsville 30512.)________________ agencies. Research information is distributed through publications, short courses, field days, exhibits, and personal requests. Management studies of fescue include clipping height, clip frequency, stockpiling and fertility treatments. The objective of this research is to produce good yields of high quality forage with emphasis on keeping the fescue plant green. Quality of forage is improved by growing legumes with fescue. Species and varieties of legumes are evaluated annually. Plant breeders utilize the cold winter temperatures to evaluate genetic materials for winter hardiness. Tifton 44 bermuda was selected from a mass planting of hybrids. Corn studies include no-till plant- ing and hybrid performance for grain and silage. Soybean studies underway are herbicides, response to lime and micronutrients and varietal performance. Sorghum investigations include varietal evaluation of grain and syrup types and breeding of lines for acid soils. S. De- Cooperative Extension Service, UGA partment of Agriculture. Irvin said it was his opinion that both domestic and foreign market needs could best be met and the farmer could best be served through a marketing system that would put emphasis on upper stalk, higher quality tobacco. Market needs and farmer interests would be better served if lower stalk, poor quality tobacco were left in the field and never harvested, according to Commissioner Irvin. "As competition on foreign' markets grows stronger, we need to offer an even better quality to foreign buyers," Irvin said. In light of conditions in the Georgia swine industry and agriculture in general, the strategies for survival and growth in 1981 should emphasize improvements in four major areas: reproduction and feed efficiency, efficiency of labor and swine facility utilization, feed costs per pound of pork, and energy efficiency in swine facilities. These are the areas where the average Georgia pork producer most often falls short of reasonable goals. These factors also represent the greatest potential improvements in pork production economics which mainly involve changes in management and not necessarily capital investments. In many cases pork producers could improve their financial outlook without additional indebtedness. (feed/lb. gain) are tied very closely together. The goal is to increase the number of pigs marketed per sow maintained in the herd. This will directly reduce the sow and boar feed costs per pig marketed. A reasonable goal for individual producers is 15-16 hogs marketed at 3.70 feed conversion. Top line producers are producing 20-22 hogs per sow per year with 3.50 feed conversion for the entire herd.
