Peanut Farmers
Seek Increase
The peanut industry is preparing for 1980 with cautious optimism because of the devastating price increases in the costs of production.
Although the 16,000 peanut growers in Georgia experienced ter-
rible weather during the midst of harvest season j last year, our proi ducers have neti ted a total of 852,000 tons, our third largest crop in the history of our industry.
The Georgia Peanut Commission, as representatives of our state's producers, has made a special effort through our education committee to explain to
(Our guest columnist this week is George M. Whelchel, Chairman, Georgia Peanut Commission, P.O. Box 967, Tifton 31794.)
the U.S. Department of Agriculture the plight of the peanut farmer and we've recommended an increase in the quota price of peanuts.
Peanut growers have received no quota support rate increase under the present amended law which began in 1978. During the same period, according to USDA statistics, prices paid by growers for wages, production items, taxes, etc. increased 12 percent in 1978 and 14 percent in 1979.
As a result of USDA's retaining the $420 quota support rate, peanut producers now receive 58 percent of parity compared to 71 percent in 1977.
This 26 percent increase in the costs of production will increase even more by planting time in April.
The Georgia growers in cooperation with the National Peanut Growers Group have recommended that the quota price support rate be adjusted to reflect the index of prices paid by growers during the period of the present peanut program.
This means that the $420 per ton minimum quota support rate be increased 12 percent for 1978 and 14 percent for 1979. Factored as USDA does, not counting November and December, this would be a recommendation of $502 per ton for

I was in the store last week and noticed some coffee dated December 18. I mentioned it to the store manager and it was removed. However, yesterday I noticed some other pro-
ducts with an early January date. B.I.
Decatur Thank you for calling the information into our office. One of our inspectors visited the store and the out-of-date bags were removed from sale. The regulations regarding dated food items were also explained to the store personnel.

February has been proclaimed "Egg Month" in Georgia by Governor George Busbee. The proclamation recognized the "unportance of the state's egg producers as key contributors to Georgia's overall agricultural industry." Georgia is the second largest egg producing state in the nation with egg production the third largest cash farm product in Georgia, totaling more than $201,505,000 in 1978.
Those on hand for the proclamation ceremony included [1-r] Robert Howell, Executive Director of the Georgia Egg Commission, Commission Board Member, Bob Lathem, Commission Administrative Assistant, Devita Stair; Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin; Egg Commission Board Chairman, Ed Houston, and Board Member Gene Sutherland.

I bought some regular self-service fuel the other day and after I finished pumping the gas, I noticed the price was the same for the full service.
B.T. Duluth It certainly pays to compare. There is no requirement that the prices be different for self-serve, so check the pumps before and after you fill your tank. It's rare that they are the same, but I'd certainly take advantage of it and sit in the car. ****

Soybeans Top Money Maker
In 1979 Agricultural Income
The total value of Georgia's 1979 crops was $1,3,97 million. This is a 21 percent increase over the value of the state's 1978 crops. Soybeans edged out peanuts for the first time as the most valuable crop in the state.

Choose Eggs for Economy, Nutrition and Good Eating

Don't let inflationary food costs get you down. Look on the sunny side! Believe it or not, one of nature's best foods the egg is almost as low in cost today as it was in 1951. Over the past twenty-seven years the price of a dozen eggs has risen only 18 cents, an amazingly small change when you consider the double digit increase of other foods.

The main reason egg prices are low is efficiency in breeding and raising hens, feeding and housing them, and collecting and processing their eggs. Today's huge laying houses shelter thousands of birds, at just-right temperatures with care-
fully controlled lighting and feeding. In most modern egg operations,
conveyor belts gather the eggs. Washing, weighing, grading and
packing are all done by machine. It

takes only .0006 to .0008 of a man hour or only 2.8 cents in labor to produce a dozen eggs.
Eggs are a nutritional bargain, too. The only protein considered better than the egg is Mother's milk. The only protein foods cheaper are peanut butter and beans. Eggs supply thirteen minerals, every vitamin except C, and at only 80 calories
each!

Even though prices for soybeans were slightly down, there were 23 percent more acres planted in soybeans and record high yields of 28 bushels per acre pushed production to a record 58.8 million bushels. The value of the crop was $364.6 million, a 94 percent increase over the drought-damaged 1978 crop.
Peanuts, the third largest crop in history last year, were valued at $353.4 million. It was the second most valuable peanut crop on record.
The corn crop climbed 61 percent in 1979 to total $2g7.2 million. Much of this increase is attributed to a record high yield of 65 bushels per acre. Irrigation was used more extensively in 1979 with some growers reporting a harvest of more than 200 bushels per acre.

Durocs are one of the most popular breeds of hogs in the United States. They gain weight rapidly, produce large litters and mature early.
The modern Durocs are an American breed of hogs developed from two distinct strains, the Jersey Red and Duroc. Both breeds were popular in the 1800's but breeders realized that by combining the two they could produce an animal with the most desirable qualities of each breed.
Jersey Reds were popular for their enormous size at maturity, prolificacy and rugged constitution. They were considered, however, to be a breed of lower quality with coarse bone and rough textured hair.
On theotherhand, the Durocs were a much higher quality animal and added weight at a much earlier age than the Jersey Reds. Their problem was their size was considerably smaller and compact.
The Duroc-Jersey hog produced from this union was very popular and by 1920, hog census figures showed that nearly 40 percent of all registered hogs in the U.S. were Durocs.
Durocs vary considerably in color ranging from very light gold to a dark, dark red that looks like mahogany. The animals are large with boars averaging 950 pounds at maturity, sows, 750.
First Time
(Continued From Page 1) The 1979 tobacco crop was the
lowest it had been since 1976. The value of this year's crop was $142.4 million showing a 21 percent reduction from 1978. Part of the yield and price reduction were weather related.
Cotton showed a 40 percent increase in the value of the crop over 1978. Twenty-nine percent more acres were planted and a recordhigh yield of 496 pounds per acre helped to value the crop at $51.2 million.

quota peanuts. USDA indicated to us during re-
cent meetings in Washington that a 7% price increase would be sufficient for growers and economies of
profit could be increased with an increase in production.
Figures indicate that production
has not increased significantly the past five years and we believe that
the peanut farmer should get more
than 6 or 7% because not a single production item has not increased at least 6%. Fuel is up 100%, fertilizer
30% and other items average 12%. We expect to hear USDA's response
with their announcement February
15. Export markets continue to grow
with about 560,000 tons of our 2 million ton production in the U.S., up
10 percent from last year. Cooper-
ative export market development programs sponsored by growers, shelters, the National Peanut Council and the Foreign Agricultural Service are now underway in the United
Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Japan and the Middle East.
As we approach 1980, our dom-
estic and export markets look good and are growing ... but what good

are they if the farmer can't produce at a small profit. That's why we believe that a price increase in the quota support rate for peanuts is a MUST in 1980.

Good Eating
(Continued From Page 1)
And, eggs can do so many things. Scrambled, fried, baked, poached, cooked in the shell, scuffled, omeleted, or quiched they make a great main dish. They are also essential ingredients in many recipes" - for binding, emulsifying, thickening, leavening or coating. So keep enough eggs on hand.
Remember to store them, large end up, in their original carton in your refrigerator. They will stay fresh for four or five weeks this way. Don't let inflation and meal planning get you down. Let eggs help you out!
If you would like additional recipes send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Georgia Egg Commission, State Farmer's Market, Forest Park, Georgia 30050.
