Prices Increase
On No. 2 Fuel
As many of you will remember, the spring of 197g was marked b shortages of No. 2 fuel which fected agricultural operations in Georgia as well as many other parts of the country. While it is evident that we have seen the last of bountiful fuel supplies, the availability of petroleum products will continue to fluctuate on a periodic basis.
Barring further disruption in our foreign supply and assuming adverse weather conditions do not become prevalent, No. 2 fuel supplies should be adequate through the first half of 1980. Thus, the real problem confronting us is not one of supply, but of price.
In 1979, the U.S. imported 50 percent of the petroleum we consumed from over 25 foreign countries. While we imported almost as

much in 1978, the average price for a barrel of imported crude oil has soared from $15/barrel to $31/barrel in the last 12 months.
Foreign crude oil has sold for as high as $46/barrel in recent weeks and there is every reason to expect that the average price of foreign

Commodity Vote
Deadline Slated
Midnight February 5, 1980 is the deadline for farmers to cast their ballots in the referendums currently being conducted by the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Eggs, Milk and Cotton.
These referendums are being held on the question of reaffirming the Commissions for three more years.
Producers of record were mailed ballots in early January. Qualified producers who might not have received a ballot can receive one by contacting the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 326 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, GA 30334 or telephone (404) 6563678.

Department Veterans
Named to New Posts
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin announced last week the promotion of two employees to key positions within the Department.
Jack Leard, a University of Georgia graduate from Wilkes County who has served the Department for six years, will assume the position of Assistant Commissioner in charge of General Field Forces. In this capacity Mr. Leard will coordinate and supervise the agricultural inspection services of the Department of Agriculture.
In addition, Dr. James Quigley, assistant director of Meat Inspection, has been named Associate State Veterinarian and Director of Animal Health with the Department of Agriculture. In his new job he will work mainly with livestock disease eradication and control in Georgia.
Both promotions take effect February 1,1980.

Increase in Several Areas

The Farmers Home Administration has announced increased interest rates on most loans made through their agency. According to State Director Bob
Blalock the increased results from increased cost of Treasury borrowings.

Blalock also advised that in keeping with the President's objective of reducing dependence on imported petroleum, FmHA is increasing its efforts to finance energy saving devices and alternate sources of energy with its farm loan program.
Farm ownership and operating loans may be made for a wide variety of energy related purposes such as insulation, solar/heating/drying equipment, windmills, methane generators, and alcohol stills.
Anyone interested in these energy saving techniques or eligibility for loans made through FmHA should contact their local FmHA County Supervisor.

Tobacco Growers Urged to Attend Important Meeting

The 22nd annual Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation district meeting for Georgia growers will be held February 12 at 2 p.m. in Waycross at the Ware County Courthouse.
Following operational reports for the Co-op, a brief business session will be held to elect a Georgia director for the ensuing three year term on the Stabilization board.
Director Frank Strickland from Lakeland, Georgia, has served the past two years filling the unexpired term of the late Jack Massee. Strickland will be up for re-election to represent the Georgia growers on the board.
"Flue-cured growers are urged to make every effort to attend Stabilization's meeting in order to gain a better understanding of the Cooperatives' operation," said Director Strickland.

Dear Editor: I would like to suggest that all ads in the BULLETIN
be required to name a price for the item for sale. I feel this would be of benefit to the seller as well as the buyer.
It would eliminate the seller receiving calls from persons who do not want to pay the asking price. It would probably encourage more serious prospective buyers to call if the price is within the range they want to pay.
If the price is not advertised, it discourages calls to the seller because in most cases the prospective buyer does not want to spend the price of a long distance telephone call only to find out the price is not what he wants to pay or can afford.

Dear Editor: I have double windows in 2 of my bedrooms. On the
lower half I have utilized cardboard and cut to fit each window, bending and cutting place on top of window where lower and upper sash meet.
This keeps all air out and looks like cafe curtains from outside and in. It goes under regular curtains. The cardboard could be painted or decorated.
My house is heated on lowest gas jet there is without going out. Hope this helps someone on limited income.

Ovens Meals Have you ever cooked a whole meal in the oven at one time?
It saves time no watching, stirring, turning. It saves energy everything cooks at one time
saving on utility bills It saves food little chance of burning or over cooking Get into the oven meal habit. Take advantage of all available oven space. Choose dishes that cook at about the same temperature. If the temperature varies, say 325 degrees, 350 degrees, and 375 degrees F, choose the average temperature of 350 degrees F and make allowance in time for the other dishes. Place pans so that heat can circulate freely. The pans should not touch the sides of the oven or each other. Preheating is unnecessary except for breads and cakes. Ten minutes is usually plenty of time when preheating is required. Avoid being an "oven peeper". Each time the door is opened, up to 20% of the heat is lost. Frozen vegetables can be baked right along with the main dish. To cook a 10-ounce package, place in a covered baking dish. Add 1/4 cup water, salt, pepper, etc. and bake until tender. Depending on the vegetable, allow about: 50- 70 minutes at 325 degrees F, 40-60 minutes at 350 degrees F, 30-50 minutes at 3 75 degrees F. Here are some ideas that could be combined to make great oven meals.

1 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

3/4 cup oil

2 cups self-rising flour -

1 cup nuts

1 cup raisins

Beat sugars, oil and eggs until creamy. Add vanilla and

1 cup flour and beat until well blended at medium speed.

Add other cup flour and fold in nuts and raisins. Mix well

by hand. Bake in greased oblong pan for 35 minutes at

350 degrees F. (If you don't like raisins you may substitute

with dates, chocolate chips or coconut.)

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 Toblespoons flour 1/4 cup softened margarine

2 eggs - slightly beaten 1 cup white corn syrup

(1/2 stick) 1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup small pecan pieces

Mix sugar, salt and flour thoroughly. Beat eggs slightly

and add with margarine to dry mixture. Mix. Add syrup,

nuts and vanilla. Mix well and pour into unbaked pie shell.

Bake 45 minutes to n hour at 350 degrees F. Serves 8. Laurine Deal

Green Bean-Sour Cream Casserole

2 Tablespoons margarine

2 Tablespoons flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

3/4 cup milk

2 Tablespoons chopped onion

1 (17 oz) can French-style

1/2 cup sour cream

green beans, drained

1/2 cup Swiss Cheese, shredded

Toasted bread crumbs

Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour,

salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture

is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat and stir in milk.

Return to heat and stir until thick and smooth. Remove

from heat and stir in sour cream and onion. Place green

beans in 1-1/2 quart casserole and pour sauce over them,

stirring to mix well. Top with Swiss Cheese, then bread

crumbs. Bake 20 to 25 minutes at 325 degrees F.

Wood-Burning Appliances
Due to the energy crisis, the MARKET BULLETIN will publish notices for woodburning stoves and heaters No other appliances are published in the BULLETIN except those used to heat farm buildings such as chicken houses.
Portable Sawmills
For many years the MARKET BULLETIN has had a stringent policy restricting publication of sawmills or other items related to the [umber industry. This policy will remain in force with the exception of portable sawmills which we understand are needed and widely used on individually owned and operated farms in connection with clearing land.

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. AH agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are ad vertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small
rooted cutting. __ ____

Prices Increase

crude oil will rise significantly during 1980.
The remaining 50 percent of our crude oil supplies comes from domestic production. The selling price of this crude oil is regulated by federal price controls and averages about $7/barrel. The decision has been made to remove price controls on domestic crude oil which will allow the price of this crude to rise to world prices over an eighteen month period beginning June 1, 1979.
As the price of crude oil rises, these increases are reflected in the price of No. 2 fuel. Therefore, throughout 1980, the price of No. 2 fuel is expected to rise as foreign and domestic crude oil prices increase to record levels.
It is difficult at this time to project the price of No. 2 fuel for this planting season. Present prices range from 85 cents to 95 cents per gallon which compares to 45 cents per gallon just one year ago. At a minimum, however, the price of No. 2 fuel is expected to increase 2 cents/3 cents per gallon each month throughout the season.

One of our readers told us about an anti-silverflsh method she had used for years to keep the bugs out of her books, clothes and other storage items. She advised to wrap the books or whatever in several layers of newspaper cause the ink on the paper was poison to the bugs. According to the homemaker, you should fold the paper over several times at the seam to keep the bugs from creeping in. Do not use tape or anything else with glue to seal the package since silverfish have an unsatiable appetite for glue.
Crepe Myrtle owners now is the time to prune your trees. By cutting back unsightly limbs during winter months, the tree will have time to set blooms for summer color.
This is also the best time to set out fruit trees, plant blueberries, asparagus, horseradish, and rhubarb. If you have a greenhouse or cold frame you can start vegetable and herb seeds. By the time the danger of frost has passed, your transplants will have a head start in the garden.

Rabbit Breeding

There are more backyard rabbit breeders in Georgia but there are also regulations administered by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The regulations allow up to 500 animals to be raised and processed without inspection. This allowance is made for rabbits raised and processed for personal use.
Rabbit raisers involved with greater numbers, however, are required to adhere to Agriculture Department inspection standards which require that the rabbits be processed in a federally inspected meat processing plant. Currently there is only one rabbit processing plant in Georgia, located near Augusta.
By comparison, rabbits have been raised, processed and marketed in Europe for over 1,000 years and in this country over three million pounds of rabbit meat is produced annually in California. Experts indicate that the full potential of the domestic rabbit will make major strides in the near future, particularly in Georgia and the southeast.

Often it is one small physical characteristic that helps set a breed apart from other breeds. In the case of the Berkshire, many people claim it is the ears.
The ears, because they are medium in size, stand erect and set well apart, do not flop in the hogs' eyes like many other breeds. This enables the animal to get around more easily, and graze more freely. It also makes the hog better natured.
Of course, this is not the reason breeders select Berkshires to raise. They want a hog that produces a high quality carcass, is deep and plump in the ham, long and well-balanced through the loin and has a high ratio of lean and a minimum of lard. Berkshires can supply all these desired qualities.
Physically, the Berkshire is solid black with six white points (four white feet, a white stripe in the face and white tail tips).
Berkshires have short snouts and broad faces which have given rise to the nickname "dish face". Reproduction wise, Berkshires are not as prolific as some other breeds although a sow produces an average of nine pigs per litter. At maturity, the average boar weighs 900 pounds, 800 pounds for the sow.
Historically, Berkshires came from south central England, specifically the county of Berkshire. The animal was crossbred with Chinese and Siamese hogs to produce a higher quality hog with many of the physical characteristics the Berkshires possess today.
Berkshires were first imported to the U.S. in the early 1820's and gained in popularity in the north central states during the 1800's. In the late 1870's efforts were made in Georgia to popularize purebred Berkshires but agriculture was still depressed from the War Between the States.
It was not until the 20th century that the states' swine herd improved and the Berkshires gained a foothold in Georgia.
Garden Classes Set
There are two more "Super Sundays" in the Atlanta Botanical Garden winter sessions. The February 3rd session will be an introduction into rose growing. The final session will be February loth, featuring "shaping up your shrubs." All sessions start at 2 p.m., are open to the public and free.

Changes in Ag Rules
Discussed at Hearings
Changes in Department of Agriculture policies and procedures will be discussed at several hearings scheduled in February at the Department of Agriculture Building in Atlanta.
On February 26 at 10 a.m. changes in regulations of the Department's Seed Division, particularly related to noxious weed content will be discussed. A hearing for discussion of changes in the Administrative Procedure Act is also scheduled for February 26 at 10 a.m.
The hearing set for 10:30 February 26 pertains to the rules and regulations of the Animal Health Division of the Department of Agriculture, particularly the payment for livestock purchased at auction.
At 1:30 February 26, changes in the local operating rules of the Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah State Farmers' Markets will be discussed. (Please note change in date and time from last week's announcement.)
At 10 a.m. February 27, changes in the local operating rules of the Atlanta Farmers' Market will be discussed.

The widespread participation in a series of educational rabbit seminars sponsored by the Rabbit Breeders Association of Jonesboro is a good indication of the increased interest among growers.
The Metro organization is a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association which was formed in 1910 to promote the raising of rabbits both for show and commercial purposes.
A February 16 show has been scheduled by the Jonesboro group at the Atlanta State Farmers Market. Short courses in rabbit production are also in the planning stages for this spring.
The Metro Breeders Association, along with other Georgia organizations, the AREA and the Clayton County Extension Service, are working together to provide not only basic information but to establish registration, health and a series of

A long time cotton producer from Waynesboro has received the prestigious "Presidential Award' 1 from the Southern Cotton Growers Corporation. Bobby Webster was lauded as the "outstanding cotton producer hi the southeastern United States" for his unselfish dedication to the industry. The Southern Cotton Growers organization has presented the award only five other times dur ing its 18 year history.
