Station Studies
Major Crops
In recent years the Southeast Georgia Branch Experiment Station, located in Burke County at Midville, has been engaged in row crop research of cotton and soybeans. More cotton experiments are conducted at this location than at other experiment stations in the state.
Cotton has been a good crop to Burke County throu&^ the years. We
have been keeping a detailed economic enterprise analysis on cotton since crop year 1963. Over that period of time, we have shown a negI ative return or crop loss to landI and management for only two years, 1977 and 1980. The remaining 16 years have been

profitable.
Cotton is an indeterminate plant which means it has the ability to keep growing and fruiting until frost. During periods of drought, the cotton plant continues to fruit and when rain does come, growth takes place in order to set more fruit.
Crops such as soybeans and corn must have water at the critical fruiting period or else low production will result. Our data indicates that cotton has the ability to withstand drought over the period 1963-80.
A more recent reason to continue research on cotton is high oil prices. We may be able to produce cotton for fiber cheaper than synthetic fibers from petroleum products. Cotton is one of our farm exports Which offsets U.S. deficit balance of foreign payments.
In addition to the economic research, other scientists are looking at new varieties, hybrid cotton, short season cotton, fertility, insect control, nematode control and weed control.
Current soybean research includes, variety testing, breeding, weed control, fertility, insect and nematode control.

My friend says that if you eat carrots with chocolate the calories in the candy don't count. Is my leg being pulled?

Yes, yes, yes! Believe me, when someone discovers calorie-free chocolate we'll be the first to know.

New Serum Helps Keep

Brucellosis Under Control

A reduced dosage of Strain 19 Brucellosis vaccine will soon be available in Georgia to help cattle raisers combat the disease through immunizing young
calves.

Georgia Agriculture and USDA veterinarians believe that the reduced dosage vaccinations will prove ample immunity for the calves, with fewer side effects than the high dosages previously used.
Ellen Sheerin, Senior Lab Scientist for the Department of Agriculture checks cattle blood samples
USDA regulations were amended effective October, 1980, to allow heifer calves, of beef or dairy breeds between four and twelve months of age, to be vaccinated with the reduced dosage.
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin termed the reduced dosage program a "major tool in fighting the battle and controlling the disease of Brucellosis."

Georgia pioneered a two-year accelerated Brucellosis program in 1976. There were 113 known Brucellosis infected herds in Georgia when the program began. An additional 1,255 herds were discovered during the testing period. That figure has now been cut to only 46 infected herds.
"A Brucellosis surveillance pro-
gram continues in Georgia at livestock markets, packing plants and
certified free herds on the farm to keep our cattle safe and control the spread of this terrible livestock disease, Commissioner Irvin commented. "We also milk ring test
Georgia's dairies quarterly to keep this disease from spreading."
Brucellosis, also known as Bang's Disease, has long been the object of an extensive state-federal Brucel-
losis eradiction program. The goals set for the overall project are aimed
at protecting 99.5 percent of cattle in the United States which are free from disease, while at the same time eliminating the remaining infection.
According to the latest federal figure, Brucellosis still costs cattle owners nationwide more than 56
million dollars in annual losses from reduced' calf crops and lower milk yields brought on by abortion, birth of weak calves and breeding problems.
With no state-federal controls, bsses could reach an estimated one billion dollars annually in a few years.

Rutte* Tree?
When you can't garden outdoors, concentrate on indoor plants such as rubber trees. The most common rubber tree is Ficus elastica and is native to the tropical forests of Asia.
The rubber tree plants are very popular houseplants and have been passed down through family generations in many cases. They are easy to grow, long-lived and make an attractive plant for almost any room in the house.
The leathery green leaves can measure from four to twelve inches in length. They can grow to great heights with most of the foliage clustering around the top of the plant, leaving the woody stem bare.
When this happens, if you do not want a rubber "tree" you must air layer the plant to encourage new growth. Cut the stem with an upward slant about 1/4 of the way through the stem. You may want to dab on rooting hormone to speed root growth in the cut but it is not absolutely necessary.
Tie a handful of moist sphagnum moss around the cut and then cover

the moss and wound with plastic film. Tie it carefully and securely so that no water vapor can escape. After a few months, the moss will show roots. Cut the stem below the moss and plant the hew plant in a fresh pot.
The parent plant will put out new growth and the new plant will soon establish itself as another attractive houseplant.
