Craftspeople Needed
For New Program
Two years ago the Appalachian Regional Commission out of Washington, D.C. and the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities funded a program to survey and document the craftspeople of the thirty-five counties in the Appalachian region of North Georgia.
The Crafts Program has been a huge success. They documented 465
craftspeople, set up buying and marketing co-ops, offered educational seminars and conferences, and published a catalogue/directory with a follow-up supplement.
The Crafts Program had as a goal identifying methods of linking producers with markets and helping craftspeople in

marketing and sound business practices. The economic impact of this program has been enormous and is still growing.
Now, with the help of another grant from the Coastal Plains Regional Commission in Washington and the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities, we are trying to expand the program to cover the rest of the state.
The Grafts Program knows how important craftspeople and their work are and have proven it in North Georgia. Surveys have been mailed to every craftsperson we could find in the remaining 124 counties not covered by the first crafts project. But only a few more than three hundred craftspeople have responded. If thirty-five counties in North Georgia can document 465 craftspeople, the rest of Georgia must have more than three hundred craftspeople.
The Crafts Program needs your input and help. If you produce original or traditional crafts yourself or know someone who does, please let

Nominees Compete What to Grow, Where to Sell? For Tobacco Posts Asfc Your GDA Marketing Man
Six nominees are vying for three district posts on the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Tobacco.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Area Marketing Coordinator Program is helping the state's produce growers add millions of dollars in profits to their operations.
Three will be chosen to represent Districts 2, 3 and 4 for three year terms beginning February 21.
The three members will be chosen from the nominees by ex-officio members of the Commission as provided for by law.
Farmers will not be required to vote because only two persons were nominated for each district post, and tobacco producers requested that with only two nominations for each district, no balloting process be held. The ex-officio members accepted the recommendation of the producers.
The nominees for the three posts are District 2, Kermit Mancil of Lanier County and Frank Strickland of Lanier County, incumbent. District 3, Cleve Henderson of Pierce County and Lindsey Thomas of Wayne County to replace Fred Voigt of Waycross, who is retiring. District 4, Robert Cox of Bulloch County, incumbent, and Larry Floyd of Bulloch County.
Grandpa's Garden
"My husband read that seaweed is a good fertilizer," Mrs. Phil Moore, Gwinnett County, writes. "So, when we went to Florida recently, instead, of seashells we collected seaweed in big black garbage bags and filled the trunk full.
"By the time we reached the Georgia line, we had to stop at a roadside dumpster and unload the seaweed. The hot trunk, and black bags made the seaweed smell unbearable. Tell your readers that if

The program, established in 1973, assists growers in every phase of their business, from better land usage to the location of more profitable sales outlets, to quality control, labeling, packaging and even advertising techniques.
Program coordinators discuss
with farmers crop possibilities and the best sales outlets for their produce.
The marketing coordinator's " responsibility is to advise the far-
mer., both large and small, what produce to grow that will move the fastest on the nearest market and provide the best dollar return.
Coordinators also help when farmers are "caught" with large volumes of produce they have not been able to sell, most-times finding markets for the surplus. They also work on the other end of the spectrum helping buyers find large volumes of needed products.
The coordinators not only aid in sales opportunities but, also offer

Go. Boiled Peanuts,
A Southern Delicacy
There is no firm method for cooking boiled peanuts. The shells of some peanuts absorb more salt than others, so it is best to begin with 1 tablespoon of salt per pint of peanuts. Then add more salt to taste later. The texture of the peanut when fully cooked should be similar to that of a cooked dry pea or bean.
Boil peanuts for about 35 minutes, then taste. If they are not salted enough, add more salt. Taste again in ten minutes, both for salt content and to see if the peanuts are fully cooked. If not ready, continue tasting every five minutes until they have a satisfactory texture.
Drain peanuts after cooking, or they will continue to absorb salt and may become over-salted.

Agricultural seed and
plants for sale
All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition.
Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless it is grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as McNair, Oasis, Coker, and Arthur may not be propagated for sale unless the grower is certified. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the MARKET BULLETIN office or the Seed Division of the Department of Agriculture, 656-3633.

Collards originated in the eastern Mediterranean area and were first called wild cabbage. They have been eaten for at least 2000 years and were distributed throughout Europe and eventually the New World by traders.
Records indicate that collards reached the British Isles by the fourth century B.C. and" were brought to America with the earliest settlers.
Although collards are grown in many climates, they have been most appreciated in the South. The optimum monthly average temperature is 60 to 65 degrees F. They require fertile soil and a good water supply.
Agriculturally, collards are an important vegetable crop in Georgia with our state producing more collards annually than any other state.
In the South, collards are a fall vegetable, tasting even sweeter after they have been nipped by the first frost. To prepare, they are usually boiled with salt pork after careful washing. Some folks first fry their salt pork or bacon in a skillet and then add the washed and shredded collard leaves. Cover and simmer until tender.
Safe Christmas

sure all lights are approved by Underwriters Laboratories. When using last year's lights, check for cracked sockets and damaged wiring, discarding any unsafe strings.
Fire experts say that one of the most common causes of Christmas fires is the overloading of extension cords. No more than three strings of lights should be attached to any one standard extension. All tree and decorative lights should be turned off before going to bed or leaving the house.
In decorating outside, always use weatherproof lighting.
Special precautions are necessary when using trees made of metallic material. Do not string electric lights on metallic trees, because the metal edges of the tree needles may damage insulation, electrically charging the entire tree. To safely light a metal tree, focus one or more colored spotlights on it.
Make sure that all tree ornaments are non-flammable and never use candles on or near your Christmas tree.
"Angel Hair" and artificial snow are favorite decorative methods and separately used they create no problem, but when combined the mixture becomes highly flammable.

us know. The Crafts Program is a people orientated program which can't help you if they don't know who you are.
To take advantage of the same kind of benefits which the North Georgia craftspeople have .experienced, all you have to do is fill out a confidential survey form and return it with a snapshot or two of your work. All surveyed craftspeople will be listed and some will have their works pictured in the catalogue/directory.
Our December 10, 1980 deadline means there isn't much time. Request and return survey forms to GCAH Crafts Program, 1627 Peachtree Street, Suite 205, Atlanta, Georgia 30309.

What's the difference between ground beef and hamburger?
H. O. L. Athens Technically, ground beef includes the fat that adheres to the beef that is ground; when preparing hamburger, the butcher may include beef fat from another source. In any case, neither ground beef nor hamburger may contain more than 30 percent fat. ****
My uncle sent me some tomato seeds that he bought on sale for a dime a pack. They are dated "1977." Will they sprout?
R. C. Thomson Not to your expectations, most likely. Seeds that are more than nine months old from date of germination testing cannot legally be sold at a dime a pack or any price. We'd like to know who's selling old seeds. If you'll give us a call, we will check. ,

production of produce either as a multi-cropping benefit or a full produce program on part of their farms.
Following this year's crippling drought, many farmers are seeking assistance from the program to find alternative crops.
The program encompasses everything from the establishment of roadside markets, moving surplus to frozen food processing outlets or canning plants to helping out-ofstate producers find possible markets for their products in Georgia.
To find out how the market program can help your particular operation, call the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta, (404) 6563680.

they want to collect seaweed, travel at night or in cold weather. Heat and seaweed don't mix."
Seaweed is a good fertilizer. It absorbs every mineral in the ocean and it adds those minerals to the soil. It is a great addition to compost piles or you can dig it into the soil around plants. Collecting and bringing it home, however, is a challenge.
Mealybugs are a constant problem to houseplants,- particularly african violets. Oma Jones, Muscogee County, says she mixes two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water and sprays it on her plants.
If you have an aloe vera houseplant, give it a rest this winter. Reduce the amount of light and place it in a cooler (45 to 50 degree) spot. Do not feed the plant and give it just enough water to keep the leaves from shriveling.

Genealogy Meeting
After a lifetime of fanning, Albert Long, Macon, now concentrates on his large vegetable garden where he grew this 202 pound pumpkin this year. The pumpkin was grown from "Big Moon" pumpkin seed and helped along by keeping all other pumpkins off the vine. The pumpkin is almost as large as grandson Nathan Fordham, age 4.
The December meeting of the Georgia Genealogical Society will feature a program on locating your South Carolina ancestors. The December 13 luncheon meeting is set for 12 noon at Valle's Steak House, 2575 Forest Hills Dr., SW at the Cleveland Ave. exit of 1-75 in Atlanta.
Reservations may be made by sending $10 check by December 5 to the non-profit Georgia Genealogical Society, Box 38066, Atlanta 30334. For further information call Sam Whigham, 404-255-0725.
