Raising Rabbits
Call for Vote
Has Possibilities
The number of people who raise rabbits in Georgia is gradually increasing. More significant, however, is the increase in rabbit meat consumption.
It's true that rabbit is higher in protein and lower in fat than other
meats. But, the thing that impresses people most is it's superb flavor and it's adI aptability to var| ied recipes. The | domesticated rabI bit has been a favj orite of European (gourmets for hundred of years. The Georgia Rabbit Producers Guild (GRPG) has been recently organized to present and promote the domestic rabbit as a livestock animal. We reject the idea that rabbits

Wagoner, President, Georgia Rabbit Prod-
ucers Guild, 1701 Woodberry Ave., East
Point 30344)._______________
are novelties. That attitude has kept most people from regarding rabbits in the proper prospective - as a specialty meat animal.
The GRPG is not trying to educate beginners on raising rabbits. The Cooperative Extension service has good, basic information available on request.
Our task is to work hard at following through, beyond the basics. Many Georgians have at some time raised rabbits. Most of them quit before they really got started. The reasons for these failures are many, but the big three are: (A) the lack of a stabilized market; (B) an unrealistic attitude; (C) poor management.
There are a few outlets for rabbit fryers in Georgia, but the market is not well established and is somewhat unstable. No good market will ever develop without steady production to supply it. And, no real production is likely without a reasonably stable market. These vital elements must grow in a parallel manner. There is no other way.
Since rabbits have the reputation

Tobacco sales in Georgia amounted to more than $150 million dollars in 1980. One of the largest buyers of Georgia gold leaf invited agriculture and government officials to tour their plant and see how Georgia tobacco is processed. On the tour were [1-r] Representative Henry Reaves, Chairman, House Agriculture Committee, Senator Sam McGill, Chairman, Senate Agriculture Committee, Speaker Tom Murphy, W. Earl Scott, Director, Agricultural Programs, Philip Morris U.S.A. Tobacco Co., Senator Joe Kennedy, Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin, Representative Marcus Collins, Congressman Charles Hatcher, Second District, and David Newton, Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Happy Halloween!
Following a public hearing, the Georgia Agricultural Commodity for Milk (ACCM) has voted to call a referendum from November 1 through midnight November 30, 1980 on the
question of whether to increase the assessment rate currently levied to
fund the ACCM. Under the proposal, the current
assessment rate of 8 cents cwt.
would increase to 1 percent of the average Federal Order No. 7 blend
price at 3.5 percent butterfat, for
the previous year. If approved by
the producers, the new assessment rate would become effective January 1, 1981.
Dairymen in Georgia will receive
a ballot by mail. The ACCM urges all dairymen to cast their vote on this
important question. In the event a
dairyman does not receive a ballot,
the person may contact the Commodities Promotion Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, 326 Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, GA 30334, phone (404) 656-3678.
To become effective, 25 percent of
the state's dairymen must vote on
the question and 66 2/3 percent of those voting must be in favor.

Last year Charlie Greer grew a small patch of cotton near his downtown Atlanta apartment. This year, however, he devoted his entire garden to growing "King Cotton" in an effort to keep the traditions of the South alive.
The largest cotton plant Charlie grew this year had 84 boles on one stalk. "People just don't believe that I grow cotton in downtown Atlanta. The last time cotton was grown in the 10th Street area was before the Civil War," Mr. Greer explained.
A man who came to my house selling termite control services looked suspicious. He was driving an old, beat-up car. Should I have gotten his tag number.
Mrs. H. R. Tifton
All pest.control applicators are required to prominently display their state identification number on their car or truck. If he comes back, ask to see his identification card. Meantime, we're sending you our pamphlet dealing with pest control services.

Why do some gas stations have signs advertising the price and others don't?
D.M. Douglasville Stations are not required to post such signs. However, if a station does, the posted price must be the same a*s*th*e *price charged at the pump.
I bought a can of green beans that has dark stains around the bottom. Are the contents safe to eat?
Mrs. J. S. Savannah" The risk is not worth it. The can is probably leaking. Avoid cans that are leaking, bulging or severely dented. Mention it to the store manager, too.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

What U Ragweed?
Ragweed is a
common name for
several weeds but
the most widely
recognized plant is
the one which
blooms in the fall
and causes
millions of people
to suffer from hay
fever.
Oddly enough,
ragweed's correct
name is Ambrosia
artemisiifolia. It is
also commonly
called bitterweed
and hogweed. It is
a coarse annual
,\
plant with finely
._.
divided leaves. It
v^
grows from one to
three feet tall on
roadsides and un-
tended property.
In the fall during its blooming season, it releases its pollen to the aggravation of hay fever sufferers. Unlike goldenrod, ragweed's pollen is not moist and travels freely through the air with a light breeze.
There is really no way to eliminate ragweed or its effects since on every roadside or vacant lot it grows in abundance. If ragweed does appear in your garden, pull it up before it can spread throughout your yard. For areas such as lawns or places where food is not being grown, apply 2-4-D to help eliminate the pest.
MEAT SUPPLY
What about our supply of red meat? William Thomas, Extension Service marketing specialist, says pork is plentiful, with supplies increasing seasonally. Production is close to the high rates of a year ago, and are 15 percent above the 197779 average for October. Beef supplies, on the other hand, are only adequate. The production rate is about the same as this time last year, but is eight to ten percent below the 1977-79 average for October.
In preparation for Halloween, Caroline Moore [left] shows Drew and Sam Henderson and John Lee how she plans to cut her Jack-O-Lantern. The Dawsonville youngsters are in neighbor Bill Mitchell's pumpkin patch making plans for a night of goodies and goblins. Have a happy Halloween!
Raising Rabbits
(Continued From Page 1)
of being fast producers, many beginners have an unrealistic attitude. People expect too much to soon.
Most novices invest less than $200.00 in breeding stock and equipment and expect to see a profit in a few months. This attitude isn't realistic. The margin of profit is about the same as it is for any other livestock.
Not many people are able to evaluate a rabbit. So the breeder is at a disadvantage. They often get started with poor quality foundation stock. This is the first step in bad management. Beginners should visit at least three rabbitrys before selecting their stock.
Other bad practices are improper housing and sanitation, poor feeding programs and, probably the easiest to ignore, sloppy record maintenance.
The Georgia Rabbit Producers Guild is in an information gathering and sharing phase at the present time. Our next phase will get more involved with processors regarding better production planning, improving marketing techniques, etc.
If you are interested, we will send you a position paper, recipes, markets that sell fryers, or any other information we have about rabbits.
HARVEST EARLY
The time to pick up a pecan is as soon as it drops from the tree. Charles M. Bruce, Extension Service horticulturist, says the nut is at peak quality right then.

LEAN OR REGULAR?
If you are buying extra-lean ground beef instead of regular ground beef, you may be wasting money, according to Extension Service food and nutrition specialists.
