Tobacco Farmers
Facing Problems
So far 1980 has not been a good year for flue cured tobacco growers.
Troubles began in early March with snow and a late freeze on plant beds, an excessively wet spring and late planting season followed by a two month period with little or no rain.
Extremely high temperatures in the 90 and 100 degree range have oc-
Jcurred almost I continuously sinIce early July. Growers have been hard-pressed to produce as good quality of toibacco as normally I they do.
After a fairly [good start during the early part of the selling season, much sun-baked and heat-stressed tobacco is appearing at the auction warehouses. This tobacco normally would be the best quality and highest priced leaf offered for sale. Cost-of-production in 1980 is at least 15 or 20 percent above 1979, yet I do not believe that season average prices will reach last year's average of $140.75 per hundred pounds. Deliveries to the Stabilization Corporation through the fourth week of sales amounted to 15.2 percent. This is three times the amount received during the same period last year. By the end of this marketing season Stabilization stocks probably will be the second highest in history, exceeded only by the almost one billion pounds held in 1965, prior to the beginning of the acreage-poundage program. The buying companies may be using Stabilization for a storage facility until they need this tobacco, thus saving storage cost and interest. If this is true, it would mean the eventual use of this U.S. tobacco by tobacco manufacturers and would be better for us than for them to buy from other world producing

Thanks fur following through on that gas station complaint I made. Is there an easy way to remember your 800 toll-free number in case I have
more trouble? Y.G.
Jesup Tatoo it to your wrist? Seriously, the free-for-the-calling Ag Consumer Line number is found on certification stickers that adorn every gas pump and every grocery store scale in the state. If you don't find the sticker, we need to know that, too. You might include the Ag Consumer Line number on your wallet ID.
Grandparent's Day is September 7, a wonderful opportunity to spend time with your loved ones. Walker Gosnell shares a tractor ride with his grandson Scott Loyd, age 2 in Fayette County near Brooks, Georgia. The Grandparent's Day celebration was started by Mike Goldgar of Atlanta three years ago.

Do termite control companies live underground, too? I paid $35 for an annual inspection, but all they've done is cash my check.

Corn Crop
If you are planning to add spring bulbs to your yard this fall, take an extra precaution against rodents who find tulip bulbs particularly tasty. Corine Matthews, Gainesville, writes that the berry baskets strawberries and other fruit come in make dandy cages for the bulbs. "Put your bulbs in the basket and plant the whole thing in the dirt. I haven't had any trouble with chipmunks eating my tulips since I started doing this and when I need to divide my bulbs, I just dig up the basket."
Geraldine Taylor, Walker County, says her grandmother always told her to plant daffodil bulbs around the tulips, "Cause they (rodents) know the daffodil bulbs are poison."
For the vegetable garden, now is the time to plant broccoli, cabbage, collards, lettuce, radishes and spin-
ach.
The searing drought which gripped the state this summer has left Georgia's corn crop in critical condition. The losses in value of production have been projected at more than $122 million.
Last year's production was more than 101 million bushels. This year's forecast predicts a net production figure of less than 52 million bushels.
The Georgia Crop Reporting Service says that "it is too late for the weather to have any meaningful effect on the corn situation." The situation could have been worse if not for the one-half million acres of corn under irrigation.
Even with irrigation, 350 thousand of the 1.65 million acres planted will not be harvested. In fact, most of the lost corn acreage will not be suitable even for utilization as silage or forage.
Due to the short supply of corn and the great demand in this area, some marketing specialists in Washington and Georgia are predicting corn prices, now at about $3.40 per bushel to farmers, may reach $4.00
as demand increases. Corn shipped into Georgia from
the midwest presently is costing, with shipping charges, about $3.80 per bushel. Georgia farmers with storage facilities may be able to sell their corn at this higher price to partially offset crop losses.
The low yield of the surviving corn is another dismal statistic. The projected yield has been set at 40 bushels per acre, off 25 bushels from last year's output of 65 bushels per acre.
Officials now say that even though "the book is closed" on the corn crop, the fate of Georgia's peanuts and soybeans remain an uncertainity.
Opinions differ on any possible recovery for peanuts, but most agree that a good general rainfall in central and south Georgia could turn the soybean crop around.

Dear Editor: If you have any suggestions or proven methods of getting rid of chipmunks [ground squirrel,
"porky"] please let me know. They are digging holes under just about every building and piece of shrubbery on my land.
I have had regular squirrels around my place for some time and while I would rather not have them, they are not the nuisance these chipmunks have turned out to be.

Tobacco Farmers Facing Problems
(Continued From Page 1)
countries and substituting their leaf at a cheaper price.
Changes in the tobacco program may have to be made in the near future. Growers should not be required to continue paying excessive prices for the right to grow tobacco. Yet, can growers afford to produce tobacco for sale without a price support program?
Should U.S. production quota's be lowered to produce only for domestic consumption at forced high prices? On the present market much
of the higher priced leaf goes to the export market buyers. In return large amount of foreign grown cigarette leaf is imported to the United States by domestic manufacturers. Because of reciprocal trade agreements with other nations, there appears to be little likelihood that the United States will increase import tariffs on this tobacco.
The picture is not bright. American growers are facing serious and
grave problems if they are to continue to grow tobacco. Most of these problems are not of their own making.
I think the one clear road for U.S. flue cured growers is to above all else continue producing the high quality leaf which the world has come to expect from\American growers. There is no doubt in my mind that whatever difficulty we face we will be in a better position with a stock of good usable leaf with flavor and aroma.
I hope that Georgia growers will take an active, positive, and realistic approach in helping find the right solutions for our tobacco problems. It is not going to be easy. Solutions are not going to be found by blaming others for our dilemma even though others may be partly to blame.
All segments of the tobacco industry have to work together if the right solutions are to be found.

FARM VALUES
Activity in the farm real estate market is expected to decline this year, according to USDA economists. They say the decline is due primarily to the combined effects of high interest rates and tight credit the first half of the year, the recession, and the drop in net farm income. For the year ending next Feb. 1, farmland value is likely to increase only five to ten percent. That's well below the 13 percent average increase over the last ten years.
