Georgia Grows
More Beautiful
Over two years ago, Governor George Busbee made Georgia a pilot state by the introduction of the "Georgia Clean and Beautiful Program." The purpose of this program was to involve Georgia citizens and communities in a sustained effort to reduce litter across the state.
Georgia Clean and Beautiful has been working closely with a na-
tional organization, Keep America Beautiful, Inc. to see that the goal of wide implementation of the Clean Commu| nity System concept is accomplished. The Clean Community System is a method for changing people's attitudes about waste handling practices. When Georgia Clean and Beautiful was established, thirteen communities statewide had adopted

the Clean Community System. Now there are thirty-seven cities, counties, and city/county combinations which have put this program into effect.
Presently 55 percent of Georgia's population live in areas reached by the Clean Community System. Our efforts have put Georgia far ahead of every other state in the nation in working together for a clean and healthier environment.
Georgia's outstanding example has helped others realize the potential for such programs in their area, and presently ten states are working to create programs modeled after Georgia's success. In some Georgia communities sustained litter reductions of up to 80 percent have been achieved through this multifaceted program which seeks to build cooperation between government; business and industry; schools; and civic groups.
A key to success is the work in four areas: updated ordinances, improved technology and facilities,

A typical example recently in-
volved the loss of a huge hay baler
stolen after a farmer, who left the machine under the "watchful eye"
of a passer-by, took a break. When the farmer returned, his fence was cut and the hay baler and stranger were gone.
Law enforcement officials contend that before many crime prevention programs designed for rural areas can work effectively, many of the basic attitudes of the people in those sections must change.

As the temperatures across most of Georgia continue to hover around 100 degrees heat related illnesses are more widespread and severe in their toll.
Farmers, working long hours in unprotected, sun-baked fields as well as the weekend gardener should be aware that excessive heat can affect the body hi a variety of ways causing heat stroke, heat cramps, or heat exhaustion.

What To Do With All Those Tomatoes
Small size tomatoes are good for sauces and casseroles. Mediums are usually preferred for slicing, since fewer need to be handled and the slices are still a good size for sandwiches and salads. The largest sizes are good for stuffing or when slices are served separately.
Firm tomatoes are preferred for cooking. They lend themselves to many forms, such as stewed, fried and baked. Large green tomatoes are often used for frying while small green ones are excellent for pickling.
Raw or cooked tomatoes are an excellent source of Vitamin C and A. A 3 1/2 ounce tomato only has 22 calories.
Tomato Delights

6 ripe tomatoes

1 green pepper, diced

1 small onion, dked

1/4 cup margarine

1 cup cooked rke

1 egg, well beaten

1/4 teaspoon oregano

1/4 teaspoon basil

1 cup grated cheddar cheese

1/2 teaspoon salt

6 slices bacon, cooked and

Dried parsley

crumbled

Cut tops off tomatoes. Scoop out insides. Sprinkle inside

of tomatoes with salt and drain well. Saute onion, green

pepper in margarine. Add cooked rice, beaten egg and

seasonings. Mix well. Stir in grated cheese and bacon bits.

(Save a small amount of both to sprinkle on top.) Fill tom-

atoes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and bacon. Lightly

sprinkle with dried parsley. Bake in shallow baking dish in

small amount of water for 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Serves 6.

What is 16 Siwic Quiet?
CROSSES AND LOSSES
The sixteen square quilt is an extension of the four square. The basic square is usually 10 to 12 inches which allows for slightly larger pieces.
Fold a square in half four times. Unfold the paper and you will have a 16 square grid that is adaptable to many patterns. Select the pattern of
EVENING STAR
your choice, then draw diagonal lines to form triangles where needed and horizontal and vertical lines to make squares.
Crosses and Losses is an easy pattern to make. Follow the folding steps outlined above, color in designs and cut out pattern pieces.
The Evening Star, Flower Basket and Chevron are among the most
FLOWER BASKET
spectacular 16 square quilt patterns and can be easily assembled using bright colored scraps of cloth.
If the design appears confusing, lightly draw grid lines over the top of the picture. It is easy to see how the
CHEVRON
pattern pieces are made using this system.___'_________

sufficiently lowered and the danger is decreased.
After drying the victim, use fans or air conditioners to maintain the cooled temperature. Be sure NOT TO GIVE THE VICTIM STIMULA-
NTS. Heat Cramps are muscular pains
and cramps and are an early indication of approaching heat exhaustion. The muscles of the legs and abdomen quickly are affected. To combat the condition give the victim sips of salt water, half a glass every 15 minutes, over a period of about an hour. Exert pressure with your hands on the cramped muscles, or gently massage them to help relieve the spasms.
Heat Exhaustion is a response to excessive temperatures characterized by fatigue, weakness and collapse. The skin is white, pale, cool and clammy. Victims usually complain of weakness, nausea, dizziness and perhaps cramps. Give the victim sips of salt water, loosen the clothing and lay him down with his feet about 12 inches above the level of his head.
The prevention of heat related illnesses are much easier to cope with than the treatment. People should avoid long periods of exposure to the sun particularly during the hottest times of the day and they should avoid exertion while in the sun.
For those who must work in the sun, or during the heat of the day, limited activity and frequent rest periods are recommended. Wipe the skin with a cool sponge as often as possible and drink plenty of nonalcoholic liquids.
If unusual heat problems occur a physician should be consulted as quickly as possible.
For additional information on heat related conditions contact any local Red Cross chapter.

the pressures of our tight economic times.
The sophistication of the tools of law enforcement is keeping pace with the criminals, but public awareness is still considered the weakest link in the process.
Police, from the local sheriff to the
GBI, are working diligently to keep the rural areas of Georgia safe and secure. However, the true effectiveness of any crime prevention program is dependent almost totally on the cooperation and support of the individual community involved.

education, and enforcement. These elements working together create a new consciousness of problems caused by careless waste handling as well as providing new ways to keep communities clean. Rather than being a one-time clean up effort, the Clean Community Systems and Georgia Clean and Beautiful are ongoing and sustained programs which will make Georgia a cleaner place to live.
As the program is established in communities across the state, its application expands to meet local needs. Clean Community Systems have used changed waste handling attitudes as a starting point for generating other activities in the community. Resource recovery or recycling, beautification, energy conservation, downtown revitalization, and historic preservation are all following from the work of this program in local communities.
Far from stopping with this success, Georgia Clean and Beautiful continues to grow with new communities being added to the Clean Community System network constantly. In October, the First Annual Georgia Clean and Beautiful Awards Banquet will honor those communities, organizations, businesses, and individuals who have made special efforts during the year.
The Citizens Advisory Committee of Georgia Clean and Beautiful, a 29 member organization to provide input and linkage between groups around the state has been hard at work helping to lead this unique program. Present goals include the introduction of a special "Waste in Place" curriculum in Georgia schools as well as the institution of "Clean Team" programs in Georgia's businesses and industrial sites.
Overall, this program which draws upon five state agencies (Department of Community Affairs, Department of Education, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Public Safety, and Department of Transportation) is building a strong coalition of concerned citizens, business leaders, and government officials to insure that Georgia will be the cleanest state in the nation.
You can be involved in this effort by helping your local Clean Community System if you live in an area which has started the program. If your area has not instituted the Clean Community System, find out
how you can help by contacting our office.
With everyone's help and cooperation, we can stay on the right track and Keep Georgia Clean and Beautiful.

Grandpa's
Garden
If you love collards, you should be planting them in your garden this month. If planted now, they will be ready for harvest shortly after frost has nipped their leaves and made them sweet and delicious.
Seed may be sowed directly into prepared garden soil and later thinned to six inch intervals and finally to 18 to 24 inches. Leaves from the thinned plants can be chopped and added to fresh salads for a taste treat. After thinning, a dressing of 10-10-10 fertilizer helps encourage growth.
Remember to keep your vegetable garden picked at least every three days. Crops like squash should be harvested every two days before they get large and tough. Okra grows very rapidly and needs picking often. If okra pricklies bother your skin, wear gloves when working with the plants.
