Corn Yields Prove
Plant Food Value
Outstanding corn yields are now commonplace in Georgia, thanks to the cooperative efforts of both the fertilizer industry and University extension personnel.
In 1979, sixty-nine Georgia farmers produced over 200 bushels per acre, qualifying them for the state's "200 Bushel Corn Club". Even more remarkable is the fact that over twothirds of these yields were obtained in fields of 100 acres or more in size.
This club, nurtured and sponsored by the Georgia Plant Food

Educational Society, has played a major role in demonstrating that with good, solid management programs, outstanding corn yields can be produced throughout the state.
The Georgia Plant Food Educational Society is composed of personnel from the fertilizer industry, the Georgia College of Agriculture and the State Department of Agriculture. This organization has actively promoted and endorsed improved crop production since its founding in 1951.
The "200 Bushel Corn Club", which is just one of the Society's many endeavors, was started by this organization in 1968 and since its commencement, has received enthusiastic response from growers throughout the state.
These growers have consistently demonstrated that there are four key practices which lead to outstanding corn yields. They are high fertility, early planting, correct plant population and selection of high yielding adaptable hybrids.
In comparing the 1979 practices of the "average" 200 Bushel Corn Club member and the "average" Georgia corn farmer, it clearly indicates that

Lending Programs
Prepare for Drought
The Farmer's Home Administration is gearing up to begin paying low interest emergency loans to farmers across Georgia to help offset more than $460 million in losses sustained so far as this year's disasterous drought continues.
Rivaling the dry conditions of 1977 which turned millions of dollars in crops to dust, this year's dry weather has spelled disaster for at least 149 of Georgia's 159 counties. The hard hit drought areas have been approved for the emergency money.
But, unlike 1977, no emergency money will be available through the Small Business Administration. Avenues to farmers were open through SBA then, but the methods of processing applicants proved unsatisfactory.
In addition, to FmHA loans, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service officials say they estimate disaster payments of

Rural Crime Threatens

Tranquil Farm Living

During the last several months, headlines across Georgia have spelled a grim picture of substantial hikes in major crime - but have failed to touch significantly on one primary category, rural crime.

OQ consumer line...
The gallon of milk I bought tasted like skim or low-fat milk. It was supposed to be Grade A homogenized whole milk.
E. S. Lawrenceville
Upon testing your purchase, our inspector found it to have too much water and not enough butterfat content. This is a rare occurrence, and it's highly unlikely that more than one or two gallons of this milk reached the market. However, our inspectors will be pulling additional samples at this particular plant.

Law enforcement officials say statistics indicate that crimes in predominantly agricultural communities are on a "critical upswing."
However, there are many sophisticated tools available to help solve rural crime that did not exist a few
years ago. Police say the weakest link in the
solution to many of these incidents is the lack of public awareness of what steps to take to avoid being victimized, or to help bring about quick arrest and recovery of property.
Farmers, for instance, should know that a statewide and nationwide crime information computer

Jerry Guynn of the Georgia Crime Information Center's mammouth computer section checks for stolen tractor identification numbers with senior computer operator Xanthene Carey.
Georgia's crime computer center in Atlanta is in instant contact with every section of the state, transmitting and receiving information from every coroner of the U.S. as well as constant, direct communication with the FBI in Washington.
system is at their disposal, as close as their nearest sheriff or local police agency. In fact, there are 700 computer terminals throughout Georgia alone to help keep "steps ahead of any criminal."
Police say expensive tractors and other heavy mobile farm equipment and attachments have become key targets for theft, with extensive criminal markets seeking such items for quick turn-over and huge profit.

inkle salt on potatoes. Sift flour. Cut shortening and potat-

oes into flour. Add milk gradually (more or less according

to potatoes). Mix well and roll out. Cut with biscuit cutter

or shape with hands. Bake on greased pan for 12 to 15

minutes in preheated oven. Butter and serve hot. The

dough hook on your mixer works real well in mixing this

dough.

The hexagon is one of the most popular geometric patterns used in quilting. It was particularly favored by English seamstresses because of its versatility and ability to create a unique, personal design with one pattern piece.
The most popular hexagon styled quilt is Grandmother's Flower Garden, also known as Martha Washington's Garden of Flowers or the Honeycomb quilt.
To make your pattern piece, decide the size you wish your hexagon to be, the most desirable and workable size being from two to three inches. Draw a circle with a two to three inch radius.
Fold the circle in half. Find the center of the circle by gently folding the half circle in half and marking the center point. Do not crease your pattern. Reopen the half circle size.
Fold right side of half circle over to center, then do the same with left side, crease. Cut off round bottom to a straight edge. Open up pattern for hexagon.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

(Continued From Page 1)
I hear so many horror stories about chainsaws, I'm wondering if I need a new chain. Mine's about two years old, but works fine.
G. M. Folkston The Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington esti mates that 105,000 chainsaw users were hurt last year, mostly by "kickback." Heavy users may require two new chains per year. Frequent check-ups are apparently a good idea. The CPSC is collecting data on chainsaw accidents. Their toll-free number is 1-800-638-8326.
I bought a washing machine for $299.99, but the total bill came to nearly $350. The posted sign didn't mention "extras," like handling, delivery, installation, sales tax, etc. Why not?
T. P. Milledgeville Only the exact retail price is re quired. However, it's always good to take into consideration the bottom line price when buying.
Readers may write Consumer Services, Room 300, Georgia De partment of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 for information on areas regulated by the department. Toll free calls may be placed via the statewide Ag Consumer Line at 1-800-282-5852. In the metro Atlanta area call 6563645.

between $20 and $30 million dollars through ASCS.
FmHA State Director, Bob Blalock says the loan procedures have been tightened, particularly concerning farmer pay out of the funds. He says payments made with the loan money by farmers in many cases will be closely monitored.
In fact, Blalock said, counter signatures by a FmHA official and specially established bank accounts for the loans will not be uncommon.
Exactly how much money will be needed from all emergency fund sources to offset the drought can only be a projected estimate at this point. The real impact of the disaster remains an unknown factor until full harvest is completed in the fall.

Rural Crime

(Continued From Page 1)

The first line of defense in pre venting such thefts is adequate se curity, a complete knowledge and record of manufacturer identifica tion markings and numbers, and in case of theft, the quickest possible request to the nearest police agency that all available information be provided to the nearest crime infor mation computer outlet.
Walter Boles, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Information Center, says the system has worked extremely well with automobile recovery, primarily because most of the public is aware that such identification is available and necessary for an incident of auto theft. But, he said, it is "many times surprising" that owners of farm, garden and even lawnmower equipment do not have all necessary information readily available to aid police in a quick recovery.
Boles says even if certain equip ment does not have a manufac turer's ID number, various identi fication programs for "owner ap plied" ID markings are available at most sheriff's offices and local pol ice agencies. Go to your local sher iffs office for more information and assistance.
The official says rural property crime in Georgia each year amounts to millions of dollars in losses ... los ses which can be drastically cut, and crime which can be dram atically reduced ... if the law en forcement "tools" are properly uti lized by all those involved in a spec-
