Alumni Interest
Encourages Others
The Agricultural Alumni Association of the University of Georgia has an impressive track record since its beginning in 1914. It was active until 1935 but was then dormant until 1955.
The purpose of the association throughout the years has been to
I support strong ^programs of i teaching, exten[ sion and research ! in the college, to jbring about a closer spirit of fellowship and coI operation among [students and faclulty of the College of Agriculture and to guide agribusiness toward developing a sound and profitable agriculture in Georgia. Through the leadership of many talented and unselfish people this organization has been successful.

From the windows of beautiful Conner Hall atop Ag Hill, the highest elevation of the University, one can gaze in all four directions and count the many accomplishments of projects that received the support of the Ag Alumni Association.
To name some: (1) construction of the Science Center, (2) Agricultural Engineering Center, (3) the Coliseum, (4) Plant Sciences Building and (5) the renovation of Conner Hall which houses the office of the Dean of the College of Agriculture as well as the office of the Ag Alumni which is staffed by our most capable secretary, Jean Towers.
Other important projects and activities include tuition scholarships for worthy students, sponsorship of the Georgia Agribusiness Council, recognition awards to outstanding youth in Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, 4-H recognition awards to the faculty for

One of my friends told me to dust the inside of my house to control insects. I have had a time getting rid of all this powder. Is there an easier way?
R.S. Toccoa There is a better way. First, the insecticide you used is not recommended for indoors. The type of control will depend on the pests. However, it is IMPORTANT that you follow label directions. Concentrations and uses vary. Do not rely on your neighbor's experiences.

Tomato Disease Takes Toll
On Favorite Garden Plant

Blossom-end rot is considered one of the most troublesome problems home gardeners face. Tomatoes which appear healthy suddenly develop brown, leathery sunken areas near the blossom end of the tomato. Once the fungus has reached this stage, there is nothing you can do to salvage the tomato.

The Georgia Pecan Growers Association has honored Ray livingston for his 2o years plus service to the industry. Livingston has worked with county agents and growers to keep them up-to-date on latest research results and cultural practices in pecan production.
Known throughout the south as a pecan specialist, Livingston joined the'Georgia Extension Service as a horticulturist in 1957 and became head of the horticulture department in 1959. The pecan growers group presented him this plaque upon his
retirement earlier this year.

Blossom-end rot is caused by a calcium deficiency and is aggravated by any kind of drought stress on the tomato plants.
Although you may lose a few tomatoes, there are some remedial steps you can take. Pick off all infected tomatoes and destroy. Apply adequate irrigation water to keep the soil moisture as even as possible.
Add a good mulch around the tomato plants to conserve moisture and keep the soil cool. Finally, apply a calcium chloride spray every seven to ten days. Usually three to four applications will be necessary to prevent a reoccurence of the disease.
If you use 95 percent calcium chloride, add four tablespoons per gallon of water. If you have 78 percent calcium chloride, add five tablespoons.
The best remedy to blossom-end rot, however, is prevention. Next year before you plant your tomatoes, add calcium chloride (agricultural lime) to the plant hole. Then be sure to water your tomato plants consistently so they won't dry out.

Protect From
Unscrupulous Buyers
The MARKET BULLETIN and the Department of Agriculture have received several reports from people who have accepted large personal checks for livestock or agricultural items only to find the checks worthless.
We strongly urge people to check the validity of a personal check or, better yet, accept only cash or cashier' s check, particularly if the transaction amounts to more than $100.
If you must accept a personal check for payment, verify it with the bank on which it was drawn before releasing your merchandise. The cost of a phone call may save you a lot of problems.
We recently received a report from a lady who had sold her horse one Saturday afternoon. She was eager to complete the sale and accepted the customer's personal check for $1,200. When her bank returned the check marked "account closed" she not only had lost her horse but also had to make good checks she had written based on the $1,200 deposit.
If this happens to you, report the situation immediately to your local sheriff's office. If you have tatooed your livestock or marked your farm machinery with identifying numbers, authorities will have a better chance to recover your goods. Without, these identifying signs, however, chances of recovery are practically nil.
Senior Citizens
Voice Opinions
The second annual silver-haired legislature for Georgia citizens age 60 and older will convene November 17-21. But those wishing to take part must act soon. Petitions to become a candidate are due in Area Agency on Aging offices by July 24.
The legislature's purpose is to give elderly citizens the opportunity to meet, discuss, debate, and let their concerns be known
If you want to know more about the silver-haired legislature, or where your particular Area Agency on Aging office is located, contact Mrs. Barbara Clankscales, DHR Aging Section, 404/894-5342.

Dear Editor: This is to ask readers of the Bulletin to watch for
trees that might be helpful in a "Feeding Pigs From Tree Crops" project. The project proposes feeding pigs on acorns, persimmons, and similar hog mast during the fall and early winter at a profit. It's not easy, but it has considerable potential.
I would like to extend the mast feeding period back into July and August, but don't know of suitable foreign or domestic trees. Perhaps BULLETIN readers may know or learn of a persimmon, oak, chestnut, or other mast tree that drops ripe fruit in July or August.
And, I'm always on the lookout for SeptemberOctober mast trees that bear 500 or more pounds of fruit in their year of heavy bearing; Trees that bear smaller crops but annually would also be of interest.
If readers should know of such trees, I'd appreciate a letter, card, or call. If anyone should be interested in further information on the project, send a self addressed stamped envelope.

eorgia Cooking

Georgia Cookin Vegetable Time Summer brings an abundance of fresh vegetables. Since they cannot be prepared to be of higher quality than they were at the time of purchase, it is important to select vegetables that have a plump, unblemished and crisp quality. Except for potatoes, onions (all but green onions), and winter squash, fresh vegetables should be kept in the hydrater drawer of your refrigerator. The exceptions should be kept in a cool, dry place.
Prior to cooking they should be washed thoroughly. A stream of cold water from the faucet is the most efficient way of removing dirt from fresh vegetables.
Boiling is a method suitable for preparing almost all vegetables. Follow these tips when boiling vegetables.
DO -bring water to a boil before placing vegetables in the pan.
-boil just until tender enough to be cut with a fork. -cook frozen vegetables according to the directions on the package
DON'T
-boil canned vegetables, only reheat until they are hot throughout.
-overcook vegetables, they will loose nutrients, color, and flavor.

Broccoli Stuffed Georgia Sweet Onions

6 medium Georgia sweet onions 1 pound fresh broccoli

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise

2 teaspoons lemon juke

2 Tablespoons butter

2 Tablespoons flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup milk

1-3 ounce package cream

cheese, cubed

Peel onions and remove about a 1 /2 inch slice from the

top. Par boil until crisp-tender in salted water. Remove

centers leaving 3/4" shells. Chop center portions to equal

1 cup. (Save any remaining centers to season soups or

stews.) Cook broccoli in salted water until tender, drain

and chop off tops only. Mix chopped onion, chopped broc-

coli, parmesan cheese, mayonnaise and lemon juice.

Spoon into centers of onions. Melt butter, blend in flour

and salt; add milk and cook until thick, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and stir in cheese. Spoon sauce over

onions. Bake in an uncovered casserole dish at 375 de-

grees for 20 minutes. Serves 6.

Grandpa's Garden
Judy Coburn, Athens, has found a use for her old aquarium water. "When I clean out my fish tank, I save the water for my houseplants. My philodendron has gone 'crazy' since I started its fishy diet."
"My son loves to fool around in the kitchen while I'm cooking and the other day while I was making spaghetti he 'borrowed' a clove of garlic and started an experiment," Mrs. Paul Kilpatrick, Hall County, writes.
"Tommy stuck toothpicks into the side of the garlic clove and placed it in a glass of water with the root just touching the water. In a few days pretty green sprouts appeared which I 'borrowed' back to add to our salad. Delicious."
lames R. Brown says he has found a way to protect his melons from falling off the vine before they are ripe. "Mama cuts up an old sheet into squares and ties knots in the corners. I slip the cloth under my muskmelons and tie twine to each corner and lay the melon in the sling. Then I tie the four corners of the sling to the top of my fence the melons are growing on."

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Alumni Interest
(Continued From Page 1)
teaching, research and extension, distinguished service awards and sponsorship of an annual College of Agricultural Career Day by the Young Ag Alumni.
The Ag Alumni News, published quarterly is mailed to approximately 10,000 alumni and businesses around the world.
The association established the Hall of Fame in 1972 for the purpose of giving appropriate recognition to carefully selected persons who have rendered outstanding service and leadership to the College of Agriculture and the agricultural development of the state. Space has been designated in Conner Hall for the portraits of Hall of Fame members.
In 1973 the association established the Eterna Club. This is made up of alumni members who have made a one-time contribution of $100. or more. Only the interest is spent from this fund for projects selected by authority and approval of the board. Its members now total 1137.
It is easy to see the physical accomplishments of the Ag Alumni Association yet I feel that probably some even greater ones have been the knowledge and sharing that these Ag graduates have given mankind in his continuous struggle for food, fiber and shelter.
PESTICIDE SAFETY
Never discard empty pesticide containers where children may come in contact with them, advise safety experts with the Georgia Extension Service.

OQ consumer line...
(Continued From Page 1)
The red color or "bloom" is a re sult of exposure to ah*, which does not reduce the quality. The inner portion of the package not exposed to the air, escapes the "bloom" and is sometimes brown hi color.
When I purchase pre-packaged meats at the supermarket am I paying for the wrapping?
B.T. Moultrie No, you pay only for the meat. The packaging or "tare" weight is not included. The term net weight indi cates the weight of the food product.
Readers may write Consumer Ser vices, Room 300, Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 for informa tion on areas regulated by the de partment. Calls may be placed via the statewide Ag Consumer line at 1-800-282-5852. In the metre Atlanta area call 656-3645.
PONDS OR LAKES
Georgia ponds, Georgia lakes which hold more water? More than 55,000 farm ponds have been built in Georgia through Soil and Water Conservation District programs; they include more acres of water than the state's six major lakes.
