GWHS Promotes
Equine Enjoyment
The Georgia Western Horse Show association was formed to promote horse shows as moneymakers for sponsoring organizations and showcases for the members to exhibit their horses.
It is the goal of the association to be helpful in promoting the larg-
est, best, most I profitable, family
oriented horse shows possible.
During the year, Georgia Western sanctions about 20 or 30 horse shows, making it an 1 integral part of the equine industry in the state of Georgia. When Georgia Western sanctions a show, it supplies all of the

Soybean ACC
Vote Continues
Georgia soybean growers have given overwhelming approval for the continuation of the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Soybeans.
Of the eligible ballots returned, 87 percent were for approval of continuing the commission efforts in research promotion and education for another three years.
Members of the commission expressed their appreciation for the producers support and pledged to continue the commission programs for the benefit of Georgia soybean producers. They also reminded the producers that their ideas and input are very helpful in development of programs each year.

Georgia's interest in horses continues to increase with the economic impact on the state now estimated at $2o-million annually. There are approximately 90 thousand horses in Georgia with growing activity hi every phase of the industry including breeding, horse shows, pleasure and purebred mounts, horse patrol and equine health.
Advertising hi the MARKET BULLETIN reflects the trend. A decade ago
each edition published an average of 2o horse related ads. That number has increased more than five times.
The training of thoroughbred race horses, almost unheard of in Georgia just a few years ago, is growing across the state. Dogwood Farm, near Greenville, is a good example. Dogwood's top rider, Jimmy Grizzard, on the rail, and Steve Dunn give two of the farm's thoroughbreds a trial-run workout.
Mutual Respect With Your Horse
Important Part of Exciting Sport
The popularity of owning a horse is at an all time high in Georgia. Most folks
are familiar with the characteristics and personalities of their horses but some
owners, particularly if this is their first animal, need to spend time getting
acquainted with their horse.

Tobacco Sales
Opening Soon
The Georgia Flue-cured Tobacco Advisory Committee in a meeting at press time Friday, June 27, recommended to Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin that Georgia tobacco markets open Monday, July 21.
This opening date will allow Georgia markets sixteen sets of buyers for the first three weeks of sale.
After the initial three opening weeks, the number of buyers will be reduced to eight sets. Markets will sell tobacco on the regular Monday through Thursday schedule throughout the selling season.
By opening tobacco sales on July 21, Georgia has the benefit of 12 full selling days with 16 sets of buyers.
"Georgia tobacco farmers need these extra buyers to insure the sale of a large volume of leaf before some of the buyers begin moving to the more northern belts."
"Tobacco is one of the most important crops we grow in Georgia. We must have an orderly marketing season with an adequate number of buyers," Irvin said.
Horse Show Edition
Horse shows for July, August and September are featured on page 3 of this week's MARKET BULLETIN. Save this listing for future reference.
Also of special interest to horse owners in this week's paper are "Horses At Stud", "Boarding Facilities" and "Equine Everything Else".
The next scheduled horse show edition will be published October 1. This edition will include listings of shows for October, November and December, 1980.
Hearing Slated
A hearing has been scheduled July 29 to present and receive comments regarding proposed changes in sweet potato weevil quarantine rules and regulations.
The meeting starts at 1 pm in room 201 of the State Agriculture Building, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. SW, Atlanta.

Dear Editor: I always try to do right by my customers and send
them a little extra when they are good enough to order from me. But last month I got sick and was kinda slow sending my orders out and I got this real nasty letter from one lady saying that if I wasn't going to send her what she ordered by return mail, I shouldn't be allowed to advertise. I wrote her back right away but she hurt my feelings.
Now I want you to tell me what is the normal length of time it takes advertisers to send stuff they get orders for. I want to do the right thing.
Mrs. Luella King [Editor's note: Advertisers should make every effort to send their orders as soon as possible and by the satisfied reports we receive from our readers this is usually the case. If the advertiser experiences an unexpected delay, such as illness or receiving more orders than he expected, a post card advising the customer of the delay is a good idea.
By all means, we feel an advertiser should ship the order or contact his customer within two weeks after the order is received.
The Federal Trade Commission requires that shipments be made within 30 days unless the buyer is contacted and consents to the delay.
Dear Editor: The Devereux Center in Kennesaw is starting a
therapeutic riding program for emotionally disturbed adolescents. We are looking for sound, gentle horses for either a summer boarding program or on a permanent basis.
The Devereux Center is a private, non-profit organization, and any help you can provide availing materials to get this program started would directly benefit a number of children.
For information contact Lesu Tubbs, Coordinator, Horsemanship Program at 427-0147, or 953-2741 after 5pm.

What A Melon, Watermelon Watermelon is a refreshing change from fruits eaten year round. It's found abundantly in Georgia during the summer months and is our largest commercial fruit. Watermelons usually have a deep green skin except for a patch of lighter color where they rest on the ground while growing. The
flesh, pink or red, is crisp in texture with a delicate, sweet flavor.
Watermelon is an excellent choice for any dieter. It yields only 115 calories for a 4x8" slice (about 1/16 of a whole one) and is also a source of some important vitamins and minerals. It is 92% water and therefore a good thirst quen-
cher in hot weather. Though it is preferable to keep watermelons refrigerated
before serving, they will keep comfortably cool by surface evaporation at room temperature. Remember also, they will
continue to ripen after picking. What To Look For
In cut melons: firm, juicy flesh with good red color, free from white streaks; seeds which are dark brown or black.
In whole melons: A relatively smooth surface that is
neither shiny nor dull; ends that are rounded and filled out; and creamy colored underside.
What To Avoid Melons with pale colored flesh, and white streaks or
"white heart", whitish seeds (indicating immaturity.) Dry mealy flesh or watery, stringy flesh are signs of overmaturity
or aging after harvest. Of course the best test is tasting. Besides being good
served by their lonesome, watermelons are good in salads,
fruit cups, punches and sherbets. They are a must for any July 4th celebration.
Watermelon Cocktail Balls
1 large watermelon
Gingerale
Watermelon allowed to soak several hours in gingerale
makes a very tasty fruit cocktail. Using a melon-ball
scoop, remove all the meat from the watermelon. Soak
watermelon balls several hours in refrigerator before ser-
ving. Serve in pre-chilled cocktail cups.
Diet Potato Salad
2 or 3-10 ounce package frozen 1/2 pod of green bell pepper,
cauliflower (1-10 ounce package chopped
equals 1 1/2-2 cups fresh
3 Tablespoons prepared mustard
cooked)
1 teaspoon parsley flakes
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire
2 teaspoons lemon juice
sauce
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 teaspoon dried onion flakes
Artificial sweetener to equal 2
teaspoons. Sugar rf desired.
Cook cauliflower according to directions, drain. Mash well and add remaining ingredients. Chill several hours. (The less cauliflower, the tangier the salad will be.)
Mrs. BillTate LaFayette, Georgip
Pickled Peach Sand
1-3 ounce package lemon gelatin 1 cup pickled peach juice
1 cup 7 Up
1 cup chopped peach pickle
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Bring pickle juice to a boil and pour over gelatin; stir un-
til dissolved. Add the 7 Up and chill until slightly thicken-
ed. Add chopped pickle and nuts, pour into lightly oiled
one quart mold. Chill until set. Unmold and garnish with
parsley. Serves 8.

Correction In last week's Pepper Jelly recipe the instructions failed to mention when you should add the pectin. For clarity the complete directions are printed below:
Pepper Jelly Grind peppers and combine with sugar, vinegar and lemon juice. Boil for 10 minutes stirring constantly. Strain into another pan. Add pectin and boil one minute. Add food color if desired. Remove from heat, put in jars and seal. Makes about 4 - eight ounce jars.

Horses, mules, ponies

People who are buying and breed ing horses should ask to see the re gistration papers before leaving pre mises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin sh ould have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Midsummer Gardens Provide
Most Vegetables Up to Frost
Have you watched with envy the lush vegetable garden growing in your
neighbor's back yard, wishing you had planted a garden this spring? Or, were your intentions good but defeated by the torrents of spring rain that flooded much of the state during planting season?
In either case, it is not too late to plant a mid-season garden and enjoy most of the summertime vegetables. There are, however, a few steps to take to insure the success of your garden.
Gardens planted in mid and late summer have more of a bug problem than spring gardens. And, if there is too much rain, disease will also infect your plants.
As a prevention, experts recomm-

Mutual Respect With Your Horse
(Continued From Page 1)
The horse should be kept standing until the rider is properly seated in
the saddle or has dismounted. Proper tension always should be maintained on the reins, avoiding either a tight or dangling position.
One of the most important basic rules when handling a horse is to keep your hands and voice quiet. Avoid loud laughing and never scream no matter how frightened or excited you may be.
Never slap a horse with the ends of the reins. It is not necessary and is in poor taste.
Don't jump on your horse and ride. Warm him up first by walking, then jogging slowly. The reverse is true in cooling him off after the ride.
When riding along public roadways, keep to the right along the shoulder, never allowing the animal to wander. Keep him moving when a car passes. If you stop he may shy into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Walk the horse across bridges, through underpasses over pavements and slippery roads.
The rider must anticipate any distractions such as cars, stones, loose paper, trees, bridges, dogs, children and unusual noises.
Learn to keep the horse under control at all times. If you should find yourself in a "runaway" situation, try to stop him by sawing the bit back and forth in his mouth so as to break his hold on the bit...this will
break his stride. If riding in an open area, pull one rein hard enough to force him to circle.
The relationship between horse and rider can, and should be, one of mutual respect. The riders' responsibility is one of firmness but at the same time love and understanding of the animal.
Add a good health program and proper general care and your horse will reward you with fine friendship and an exciting sport.
end a spray treatment of the garden every ten days with a mixture of Malathion and Manab mixed together. One will kill the insects, the other will discourage disease.
Also, plants will appreciate a mulch such as pine straw or hay to keep roots cool and retain moisture during hot steamy days. Remember to water faithfully if summer rains do not provide the needed moisture.
MEN'S CLOTHES
Men like their clothes to fit properly and feel comfortable. Extension Service clothing and textiles specialists say a coat collar should fit close around the neck, with about one-half inch of shirt collar showing. And regardless of the man's height, the coat length should cover the seat of the trousers.

WATER GARDEN
Most home vegetable gardens need one to one and a half inches of rain each week. If you have to water your garden, remember that thorough waterings are better than light sprinklings at frequent intervals.

Grandpa's
Garden
"My dog ran into a skunk!" writes Mrs. Hardy Andrews. "We thought we would have to move away from home until a neighbor came to our rescue. She told us to give our dog a tomato juice bath."
According to Mrs. Andrews, the bath took almost six cans of tomato juice but it was an expense she was happy to pay since it worked and kept them from having to leave home.
When you get discouraged pulling weeds from your vegetable garden remember the old saying "one year's seed, seven year's weeds". Pull harder. If those weeds go to seed you are inviting problems for years.
Charles Grisom shared is method of keeping rabbits from his garden with us. "Take two pounds hydrated lime and one pound chalk (calcium carbonate). Mix these together and sprinkle powder around the base of plants that the rabbits eat."
Garden Needs
Attention Now
The early days of July are an excellent time to examine your garden maintenance program and make sure your gardening efforts are bringing about the desired results.
This is the last opportunity to prune azaleas before late next spring. Watch for "dryout" caused by their shallow root system. A two to three inch pine straw mulch will help.
July is also time for the last summer fertilization of your landscape plants. Use a tablespoon of a general fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, per foot of plant height. Distribute evenly around the plant.
There are a couple of pesky pests to watch for on your crepe myrtles. A white powder-like substance on the leaves indicates powdery mildew. Treat with the fungicide Karathane.
Aphids can be a problem. These are small insects that usually attack the young tender growth of crepe myrtles. A consistent spray program using a general purpose insecticide helps.
Roses should be sprayed weekly with a good fungicide; every other week add insecticide to the spray.
For your annual beds fertilize with one teaspoon of general fertilizer per square foot every month during the growing season.
Don't mow your lawn as close during a dry spell. Taller grass is more tolerant of dry weather.
The next Horse show edition will be published October 1 and will include shows for October, November and December.

Back Yard Farming
Popular Beekeeping
Valuable in Many Ways
Keeping a few colonies of honey bees has become very popular in recent years, partly because of producing honey, a natural food. Also although not immediately obvious, the pollination of various fruits and vegetables by honey bees is of greater value than the honey they produce.
Colonies can be kept in all areas of Georgia. The largest amounts are produced in South Georgia where gallberry bushes are plentiful and in the northern or mountainous region where sourwood and tulip poplar trees grow in abundance.
With a good location and good management, one to three shallow

supers or 25 to 75 pounds of surplus honey per colony can be produced by a hobby beekeeper.
The Italian strain of bees is the most common one used by commercial and hobby beekeepers. These bees are hardy, industrious, relatively gentle, and yellow to brown in color. Three kinds of bees are found in a swarm or colony.
Although there is only one long slender bee, the queen, she is the most important. The colony depends on her laying up to 2,000 eggs each day from which all bees develop.
Several drones or male bees are usually present but are not essential unless you are rearing queens. They do not gather nectar and pollen.
Most of the colony is composed of sterile female worker bees that care for the queen and brood and collect nectar and pollen. The literally work themselves to death, living about six
Miss Yvonne Delle Spinks, a 16year-old Columbus High School junior representing Muscogee Coun ty, has been named Miss Georgia Forestry for 1980-81. Miss Spinks is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Spinks of Columbus.

weeks during a honey flow. Start with at least two colonies be-
cause something may happen to one while the other would develop and do well. Having two or more colonies for comparison will help you learn more quickly about caring for them.
Standard eight or ten frame equipment should be used. The moveable frames in this equipment make beekeeping more enj oyable.
In addition to your hives you should obtain a bee-veil with hat, a bee-smoker and a hive tool. Some people also prefer bee-gloves to keep from being stung on the fingers.
Most honey bees are gentle but you may occasionally get a sting or two. Wear light colored clothing and work with the bees only during warm, sunny weather, preferable when there is a honey flow underway.
Bees are usually mean during cloudy and rainy weather. Dry, pine needles or shavings make a good smoker fuel.
One way to get started with bees is to buy two or three colonies from a neighbor or friend. This would also be an opportune time to ask some questions about care of the bees and get an idea of the honey producing possibilities in your area.
Publications on beekeeping are available from your County Extension Agent and other sources but it would also help to visit and talk with established beekeepers who live near you.
Many people get started by buying or making equipment during winter months and then ordering a three pound package with a queen for each hive during April, May or June.
Establishing a package during the spring or early summer should allow sufficient time for the colony to develop during the first summer and

then produce surplus honey the second year. Instead of buying a package, you may have an opportunity to hive some swarms during the spring.
Hives should be located away from where people work or play so the bees can fly freely without harming people or becoming a nuisance. They also should be fenced away from farm animals to protect the equipment. Cattle often will turn over the hives or damage them. If you live in a town, check the local ordinance to be sure where they can be placed safely.
Working with your bees, watching them bring in pollen and nectar and producing honey can be a very relaxing and rewarding hobby for both young and old. Honey on the
table from your hives can be a proud and exciting accomplishment.
