Youth Potential
The Future Homemakers of America is one of the largest vocational youth organizations in Georgia. Georgia's 17,500 members unite with over 500,000 members across the United States in helping youth of today assume their roles in society as leaders of tomorrow.
The goal of Future Homemakers is "To help youth assume their roles
I in society through I home economics leducation in I areas of personal [growth, family I life, vocational f preparation, and I community involIvement."
Our motto, '"Toward New Horizons," reminds members that their contributions to home life today will influence the kinds of homes

they have tomorrow; that the family life of members will influence the community and the world.
Youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Future Homemakers place challenges through group involvement and projects. Many projects are planned so that everyone's interest is met. In-depth projects that dig deeper into activities by helping to identify concerns and problems make up a large part of our local program of work.
We are preparing realistically for the future, adapting selectively to changes, striving for relevant projects, and making sure we're not overloaded with worn-out traditions that will make our program become obsolete.
Some of our concerns include "Energy Saved - Energy Earned" to encourage the members to conserve energy, and "Golden Years Deserve Golden Treatment" which is designed to emphasize to young people that older people need understanding and compassion, and deserve respect for the rich heritage they have to share.

Back Yard Farming
Growing Small Fruits in Ga.
Brings Pleasure and Profit
The first thing that generally runs through the minds of hobby gardeners when they think of planting fruits is to plant apples and peaches. If space permits, and the gardener doesn't mind hivesting money in an expensive sprayer, tree fruits should do well. However, the greatest potential for both profit and
success where space is limited lies in growing small fruits.
Beef Cook-off
Winner Named
Mrs. Willie Hendrix from Waycross is the winner of the third annual Georgia Beef Cook-off. The contest was held recently at the Rock Eagle 4-H center where the top five contestants, selected from 118 entries, prepared their dishes for judging.
Mrs. Hendrix's recipe for "Savory Braised Short Ribs" wins her the opportunity to represent Georgia at the National Beef Cook-off in Arizona later this year. See page five for her recipe.
Other finalists in the state contest were Theresa S. Huiras,'Savannah, Susan Swanson, Chickamauga, Mrs. M. B. Shivery, Leary and Hugh Poole, Conyers.
Due to a lack of locally available fresh small fruits, U-pick growers generally find themselves covered up with more customers than they can supply with fresh fruit.
By far the most popular local market fruit or vegetable crop is the strawberry. It is not unusual for people to drive 50 miles to pick a supply of strawberries for fresh eating and freezing.

New varieties such as Cardinal and relatively new varieties such as Atlas and Apollo, if properly cared for, will yield 10,000 to 15,000 pounds per acre per year, which can gross over $5,000 per year.

Georgia dairy cows are 'Very Important Animals' during June. There are approximately 128,000 cows in the state which produce 113 million gallons of milk annually. June dairy month is an excellent time to enjoy dairy products, one of our state's major commodities.
Heavy MH 30 Use
Hurts Tobacco
Export Markets
Despite a 10 percent increase in price supports to an average of around $141.50 per hundredweight, the outlook for tobacco farmers this year just doesn't look too bright.
To have a really excellent year, a record crop of high quality leaf and strong foreign market demand are necessary and under present circumstances, neither of these appear likely.
Adverse weather conditions during the plant growing and transplanting season, current drought conditions and the continuing plague of blue mold all point to less production and the possibility of less than desirable quality. Coupled with the highest production costs in history, it all spells trouble.
Market wise, prospects are for a much larger U. S. crop this year and stronger competition from developing nations on world markets. Africa

Pulpwood Leader
For the 14th year in a row, Georgia is the nation's leading pulpwood producer". Georgia has been the leading pulpwood state in the South for 31 years. The state's 8.9 million cords in 1978 was a production record. The previous high was 8.3 million cords in 1977.
All 159 Georgia counties reported pulpwood production in 1978, and ten counties produced 100,000 or more cords of round pulpwood during the year. The top five counties were Ware, with 150,340 cords; Laurens with 126,727; Wayne with 123,353; Burke with 121,300, and Coffee with 115,383.
Roundwood accounted for about 68 percent of Georgia's total pulpwood output. Residues chips and sawdust made up the remainder. Pine is the main species used for pulpwood in Georgia. Eighty-eight percent of the production is pine and other softwoods.
Fifteen Georgia pulp mills currently operate in the state, and their total capacity is over 15,400 daily.

IRRIGATION UP
It's going to cost Georgia farmers considerably more this year to operate their irri gations systems. Ed Brown, farm management specialist with the Extension Service, says equipment costs, interest rates and fuel are up. Brown says most irrigations systems in the state are powered by diesel, and diesel fuel has doubled in price during the past year.

Most people recognize the value of a compost pile to recycle organic wastes from their kitchen and yard but Mildred Queen, Albany, has found that by planting tomato plants around the edge of her compost bin she can produce large tomatoes, stake them to the walls of the bin and "feed" them all at the same time.
According to Ms. Queen, "Plant a tomato plant at each corner of the compost bin. If it is large enough, you can put another plant in betw een the ones on the corner. The roots of the tomato plants will reach into the compost pile for nutrients and feed themselves."

raspberries, blackberries and blueberries with somewhat lesser dem and for grapes.
To date, none of the conventional erect raspberries common in the northern states have done well below the extreme north Georgia mountain area. The Dormanred raspberry, a trailing variety developed hi the South, has done well in all of Georgia. The big draw back to Dormanred is trellising.
Recent developments in black berries have led to the introduction of three erect varieties, Cherokee, Cheyenne and Commanche. These

The blueberry varieties grown in Georgia are highly productive, and the berries produced are of excel lent quality. All of the varieties re
grape varieties that do best include Fredonia, a purple fruit, and Niagara, a white grape. These two varieties are commonly eaten fresh or used to make juice.
The French Hybrids are grown for wine making. The varieties that have performed best include Villard Blanc (white), Seyval (white), Chelois (red), and Chancellor (red). Seedless varieties such as the Thompson Seedless are not adapted to Georgia. One seedless variety, Interlaken, has done fairly well in Piedmont Georgia.
Evaluation studies have shown numerous small fruit varieties to be adapted to Georgia. If the required cultural practices are carried out on a suitable site, then success should be forthcoming.
