Beekeeping Skills Southern Pine Beetle Leaves
Farm-Made Energy
Answer to Problems
Ten years from now scientists hope farmers and ranchers will be able to create as much energy on the farm as they use to grow and harvest all the food and fiber they produce.
That's the goal in establishing two national agricultural energy re-
isearch centers, lone of which will fbe at Tifton.
The research work at Tifton will seek new and better methods of I generating energy Ion the farm and [better ways for [farmers to put that energy to work.
In addition to research into the direct use of solar energy, ways to produce and harvest biomass and ways to convert biomass into useful energy, the Tifton center will coordinate additional research programs at three out-of-state research stations studying wind energy for heat and environmental control and wind energy research for irrigation.
At the Tifton site itself, one research group will develop equipment and methods to harvest, store and process biomass on the farm. Sources for such biomass could include farm crops, trees, aquatic plants, crop residues, prunings, unmarketable crops and animal wastes as well as new crops specifically grown for biomass.
A second group at Tifton will seek ways to unlock the energy in biomass by using it to generate methane gas, turning it into alcohol, converting it chemically with heat or simply by burning it. The work will include methods of using biomass energy in conventional devices such as crop dryers, motorized farm equipment and equipment for farm and home environmental control.
While these two teams are at work on biomass, a solar applications group will seek new methods and equipment to collect, store and use solar heat for crop drying,

Taught in Course Many Tree Casualties Behind
The annual beekeepers short course for beginners and more ex-
perienced beekeepers will be held June 7 at the University of Georgia in Athens.
Eighty-nine Georgia counties currently are experiencing southern pine beetle problems. Forty-four of these are considered epidemic. A county is considered epidemic if it has one or more beetle spots per 1,000 acres of pine.
Topics and demonstrations will include honeybee biology and behavior, bee diseases, management for honey production, colony division, honey house operation, queen finding and requeening, instrumental insemination of queen bees and package bee installation.
The course fee is $20.00 per person. Advanced registration is requested by June 5,1980.
Requests for additional information, program and registration forms should be addressed to Dr. Alfred Dietz, Department of Entomology, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602 or telephone (404] 542-2816 or 542-8711.
Peanut Course
The annual Peanut Seed short course is scheduled for May 29 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton. Registration begins at 8:30 am.
For more information contact Harvey C. Lowery, Extension Agronomist, Seed Certification, 925 West Whitehall Rd., Athens 30605.
Back Yard Farming
Not a pretty sight... but, one that is graphically true throughout many Georgia counties. Much of the states tall timber is falling victim to the current southern pine beetle epidemic which has taken its toll so far in 89 of Georgia's 159 counties.
Dividends From Small Flocks
Need Careful Consideration
Raising small poultry flocks can be an enjoyable pastime for the entire family. Many people derive great pleasure from the activity and from the knowledge that they are producing a valuable and nutritious product for home consumption. You should consider, however the profitability of back yard poultry production.
Dr. John Skinner of the University of Wisconsin has developed a work sheet for comparing production
costs in back yard flocks with the
value of the eggs or meat produced. The examples assume that the
chickens are maintained in a clean, healthy environment and are provided with proper housing, nutrition, lighting and other aspects of good management. The calculations
are based on average values and the

The number of spots in Meriwether, Upson, Chattahoochee, Harris, Muscogee, Stewart, Talbot, Baldwin, Hancock, Jasper, and Putnam counties has decreased by 3,027 since the October 1979 aerial survey. A total of 397,659 cords has been salvaged from these counties since January 1979.
This represents 57 percent of all southern pine beetle salvage statewide. If the current trend continues, a steady decline in southern pine beetle populations in these counties will occur during 1980.
However, counties in Georgia Forestry Commission Washington and Athens Districts have shown substantial increases in beetle spots since October 1979. These are not new spots that were killed during the winter months. Instead, they are spots that were established in late

Dear Editor: When I was a child on a farm, my Daddy got the
BULLETIN. Then after I married, my husband gets it and I enjoy it very much. You learn so many helpful
things in it. I want to pass on some information to the person
who needed a cure for chicken mites. As a child, my mother used elder leaves in chicken nests. What it did I do not know though the mites were soon gone. Elder
grows in low places on creeks. Name withheld by request Danielsville, Georgia 30633
Dear Editor: My daughter is 17 years old and owns two mares, a
three year old Quarter mare and a two year old Saddlebred. She trained one horse herself and wants to train the other but was in a car wreck and is bedridden
for three months. She adores horses and reads the pony and horse
column every week. She would love to hear from people who have horses and see a picture of their horse. I am sure it would make her get well quicker.
Mrs. Anne M. Groover P.O. Box256 Jesup, Georgia 31545
Dear Editor: I usually order plants and handiwork etc. from lis-
tings in the BULLETIN until recently. I've made several calls, first the advertiser carried on a long conversation about the price of thread for afghans, etc. I asked three times for the price.
On the second call, three people asked, separately, what I wanted! Another lady I called told me the ailments of all three children, and husband and I still
didn't get any price. I want to buy merchandise, not pay for a long tele-
phone conversation. Please tell the advertisers to
state their price in the ad. Mrs. Theron Gulledge 108 Lakeshore Dr. Rome, Ga. 30161

Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breed ing horses should ask to see the re gistration papers before leaving pre mises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the sell er promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdic tion over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publi cation.
All horses offered for advertise ment through the Market Bulletin sh ould have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Egg Production
Whether you raise the pullets or purchase 20 week old ready-to-lay pullets, your cost will probably be around $2.50 per bird.
During the next 12 months, each hen will consume an average of 85 pounds of feed at a current cost of 11 1/2 cents per pound, for a total feed cost of $9.78.
Other costs include litter (6 cents /hen) and depreciation on buildings and equipment (15 cents /hen) for a total cost of $12.58 per hen per year.
During that year, each well managed, healthy egg-type hen will produce about 20 dozen eggs. Of these, about 15 dozen should be "large" or better, three dozen "medium", one and a half dozen "small" and half dozen broken or inedible.
The value of these eggs will depend on the price you would normally pay for eggs in the supermarket. If large eggs cost 60 cents per dozen, mediums 50 cents and smalls 40 cents, the total value of the eggs produced by each hen would be $11.10.
Also consider the value of the manure left for the garden (2o cents) and the salvage value of the hen as meat. Salvage value can be calculated as the weight of the hen, about four pounds, times the value per pound (8 cents) minus 15 percent for mortality and morbidity losses. This adds 27 cents per hen, for a total return of $11.57 per hen per year.
Comparing this figure with the calculated cost of $12.58 indicates that at current prices, you would lose about $1.00 per hen per year, not including your labor.
Meat Production
The cost of day-old chicks will be approximately 32 cents each, including a five percent correction factor to account for normal mortality losses. Each bird will eat
about nine pounds of feed to reach market weight, four pounds, currently worth 14 cents per pound. Total feed cost will be $1.26 per bird.
Other costs include litter (3 cents /bird), fuel (6 cents /bird), medication (2 cents /bird) and building and equipment depreciation (12 cents /bird) for a total cost of $1.81 per bird.
A four pound meat-type bird will yield a dressed carcass weighing about three pounds. If the supermarket price for broilers is 60 cents
(This article was specially prepared for the
MARKET BULLETIN by Charles F. Strong,
Poultry Scientist, Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia, Athens 30602.)
per pound, the value of the carcass is $1.80. Adding the fertilizer value of the manure (5 cents /bird) gives a total value of $1.85 per broiler for a "profit" of 4 cents per bird.
Small poultry flocks should not be considered a moneymaking venture. However, the value of the products produced will usually compensate for at least part of the out-of-pocket expenses incurred in raising the chickens. If we also consider the enjoyment, it is easy to see that for some people, backyard poultry production can be a rewarding experience .

CLEAN AND DRY
How clean and dry a garment is also has something to do with how warm it keeps you. Extension Service specialists explain it this way: The number of air pockets in a fabric plays an important role in warming; the air pockets work as insulation and hold body heat. If these air pockets are filled with soil, there isn't any room for the air to trap the heat, and the fabric's warming qualities can't work.
Oddities
Treasured Potatoes
Treasured Brazilian Irish potatoes are grown primarily as a novelty, and for this reason are advertised in the oddities column rather than the agricultural seed and plant category. Although there are reports that they do produce a tremendous number of potatoes per hill, the potatoes are very small and most people do not care to take the time needed to dig and prepare the vegetable for consumption.

A cast iron skillet or utensil needs special care, says Doris Qglesby of the University of Georgia Extension Service. It should not be scoured or washed with strong detergents.

UHwl i Aphid?
Aphids are also known as plant lice. They suck the lifeblood of plants leaving it withered and weak and susceptible to other diseases. Aphids leave a sticky residue on plant leaves which attracts ants. This residue, called honeydew, also encourages black mold and blocks sunlight.
Aphids have a natural predator ladybugs. In some biological experiments, aphids have been successfully controlled by the use of ladybugs exclusively. There are other ways, however, to discourage them in your garden.
A forceful jet of water on your plants will dislodge aphids. Be sure to spray up and under all leaves. You can also make up a tobacco water spray by soaking tobacco in warm water for 24 hours. Dilute the brew to the color of weak tea and completely spray affected plants.
Aphids are attracted to the color yellow and a bright yellow dishpan set in the garden makes a good trap. Fill the pan with slightly soapy water and empty once a day.
Winged aphids can be repelled by placing a sheet of aluminum foil under or around the plants. Apparently the foil reflects the sky and the aphids become confused, not knowing which way is up.
For chemical control use Malathion, Cygon or Diazinon according to directions on label.
For the experimental gardener, try a planting of garlic, chives, petunias and nasturtiums between vegetable rows and around fruit trees. These odorous plants are reputed to repel aphids from the surrounding garden.
Fire Show Coming

Georgia's rural volunteer fire figh ters will get a first hand look at the latest equipment and techniques av ailable during a day long seminar and demonstration May 29 at the Macon Coliseum.
The Georgia Fire Equipment show is sponsored by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Registration begins at 9 am with the opening session sched uled for 10:45.
Fire suppression, fire insurance classification and general dis cussion concerning various new bla ze battling procedures and tech niques will be among the topics fea tured.
James Turner, Chief of the Comm ission's Forest Protection Depart ment and moderator for the pro gram, said the principal purpose of the show will be to provide a "onetime, one-place concentrated demon stration of the most modern equip ment available to the volunteers and chiefs of Georgia's rural fire depart ments."

October and began to fade in Jan uary and February.
A continued increase in beetle numbers is predicted in previously non epidemic areas. A slow decline is expected in most of the counties that were epidemic in October 1979.
Salvage has made a definite im pact on decreasing the amount of southern pine beetle damage. It con tinues to be the recommended method of controlling the southern pine beetle if the measure is prope rly carried out, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Association Names
State Vet President
Dr. John A. Cobb, assistant comm issioner with the Georgia Depart ment of Agriculture, has been elec ted president of the Southern Animal Health Association.
The Association, which is an affi liation of the U.S. Animal Health Association, is composed primarily of state and federal regulatory anim al health veterinarians and techni cians from all southern states.
Cobb, who is State Veterinarian and head of the Animal Industry Di vision, has been with the Agriculture Department since 1970. He's a grad uate of Auburn University where he received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1950. He practiced med icine in Statesboro for twenty years prior to his tenure with the Depart ment.
ation to halt the spread of the beetle is the removal of all infested trees. The southern pine beetle initially at tacks the upper portion of the tree and a buffer strip must be cut to in sure removal of trees that appear green and healthy but may be infes ted and dying.
The buffer strip should be 40 to 100 feet from the last tree that shows definite signs of infestation; the buf fer does not have to encircle the in fested area, but should be made in front of the advancing beetles.
Pitch tubes, boring dust and fad ing trees are signs of the advancing path of the insect, but if a landowner has a problem in determining trees that should be cut, he should call the Commission forestry unit or an in dustry forester for assistance.
Commission personnel said cutt ing should begin on the outer edge of the buffer, with work to advance toward the infested area.
Landowners should salvage their timber while the wood is sound, but if a salvage operation is impossible the next best step is to cut the infest ed trees and leave them In the forests. The "fell and leave" method can be effective in controlling spots up to 50 trees in size.
The Forestry Commission is curr ently making an aerial survey of the beetle areas to determine the extent of the beetle spread. Landowners will be notified if any beetle killed timber is spotted on their property.

I think we are extremely fortunate to have such a massive alternate energy research effort underway here in Georgia and I know we will all be watching closely to learn more about the results of this work.
