Tax Credits Offer
Help to Farmers
Many firms, businesses and corporations including farms and agribusinesses may be overlooking or not aware of tax credits they might claim and be eligible to receive through the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit.
In this period of uncontrollable inflation, sky high interest rates and
the profit squeeze, one has to take advantage of every legal break and authorized tax reduction available to them. One of the little known about tax breaks is the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit (TJTC). The United States Congress approved a Revenue Act in late 1978 wherein employers are authorized to receive a tax credit for employing

certain individuals. The intent of the legislation is to encourage employers to hire persons from selected target groups of workers who generally experience difficulty in getting and keeping jobs.
The tax credit is an employer incentive to encourage the hiring of persons that need to be in the work force. The act permits tax credits for employers who may have persons already on their payrolls from the target groups. There are eight targeted groups i.e., Vietnamese-era veterans, handicapped persons, low income persons and others.
This tax credit provides a potential savings of $4,500 for each worker employed since September 1978 from among the targeted group. Unlike many government programs, TJTC offers a direct benefit without the burden of excessive paperwork and recordkeeping.
An employer is required only to keep a copy of the tax certification in his records as authorization for the credit. When taxes are filed, an IRS form No. 5884 is submitted and tax credit is taken.

Experts Demonstrate Ag Economics Vital to All
Farm Skills Free
A terrace building and farm equipment demonstration is offered April 16 in Madison County.
Sponsored by the Board River Soil and Water Conservation District, the day-long event will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the Dennis Moon farm on Highway 72 near the intersection with Ga. 172 two miles east of Colbert.
The demonstration and equipment show is free to the public and designed to show landowners how terraces can be built with equipment they now own.
Special tile outlet terraces will be built in one field using drain tile instead of waterways. This approach might be of interest to some land users who dislike having sod waterways in their fields. Other work includes renovation of a farm pond with equipment on hand.
The Broad River Soil and Water Construction District is comprised of Banks, Elbert, Franklin, Hart, Madison, Oglethorpe, Stephens, and Wilkes Counties. Supervisors serving on the District Board are sponsoring the demonstration to show that erosion prevention and soil saving practices can be installed by the landowner himself.
By doing this the landowner saves some construction costs, has a terrace system which permits planting right on the terrace and permits use of larger farm machinery.

Lacewings are described as "good bugs" since they feed on destructive pests and do no real damage themselves.
There are approximately 20 varieties of lacewings in the United States. Most prevalent in Georgia are the green or golden-eye lacewings. They are delicate in appearance and fly erratically.
The diet of lacewing larvae include destructive mealy bugs and aphids. They also eat thrips, mites, caterpillar eggs, scales and other bugs.
Bright lights attract lacewings at night and they can often be found smashed against automobile windshields and clinging to screen doors.
You may not be able to identify the body but if there is a slightly off odor,
Aspects of Ga. Agriculture
A major in agricultural economics offers a broad scope of options tailored to both student preferences and society's demands for specialization.
Agricultural Business and Marketing prepares students to assume responsibility in various agribusiness services. Farm supply, for example, includes
thousands of Georgia businesses each of them requiring expertise not only in management, but in the ability to recognize and keep in tune with major innovations in mechanical equipment, chemicals, feed, seed, and fertilizers.

The last time I bought gas, the pump jumped five cents before I started pumping. So I turned it back to zero and it jumped two cents. It was the unleaded self-service pump.
R.B. Macon
Thanks for calling. Occasionally the pumps will jump and you should always turn it back to zero before you begin pumping gas. However, it shouldn't jump twice. One of our fuel inspectors checked the pumps and it has been repaired.
Can you send me some information on rhododendrons?
G. T. Brooklet Yes, your brochure is in the mail.

Other Georgia firms process and manufacture food products. Nearly 2,000 companies fabricate products from Georgia's vast forestry output. In all cases, sound business practice mandates that management have thorough training in agricultural business and marketing.
Farm Management and Finance concentrates more directly on the question of farm productivity through intelligent investment practices. Students in this area learn how to obtain maximum returns on farm investments, whether handling financial matters for their own farms, or while serving as professional farm managers.
In addition, banks and other financial institutions employ specialists in agribusiness loans and mortgages, as farm finance assumes increasing importance owing to rising prices and land values.
With support from other departments, agricultural economics provides an area of concentration in community and rural development.

you can be sure lacewings were there as their odor is characteristic.
Lacewings serve a dual purpose. As adults they provide bird food and as larvae they destroy damaging pests. Their hunger for aphids has earned them the nickname "aphid lions".
The quality of rural life concerns farmers as much now as when the issue first assumed national prominence through the activities of the Grangers in the 1870s.
As the number of persons living on farms declines, we must develop methods of improving the quality of life and effective participation in institutional processes for those who remain. Improved transportation and communication have done much to alleviate the problem of rural isolation, but much work remains to be done on the efficiency of rural service.
During the past decade, many Americans first realized the importance of planning for the careful utilization of natural resources. Acutely aware of the need for objective analyses to guide responsible use of our agricultural resources, Agricul-

Ag Economics
(Continued From Page 1)
concentration in Natural Resource Economics.
Natural resource economists can develop effective and prudent biological systems for using our land and water.
Modern cybernetics mandated an option to specialize in Quantitative Methods. In cooperation with the Department of Statistics and Computer Science, the Division of Agricultural Economics emphasizes intensive training in mathematics, statistics and computer science to enable the Quantitative Methods specialist to use modern technology to help solve our pressing problems in the economics of agriculture.
The general approach permits students to obtain a broad background among the five areas, which is especially helpful to those who hope to pursue a graduate degree, as do about 15 percent of Georgia's Agricultural Economics undergraduates. Graduate enrollment in Georgia's program has risen over 50 percent during the past decade.
The economics of agriculture will continue to demand attention in the decades to come. Although problems may be more complex, their solutions become all the more rewarding as we learn to mesh the age-old problem of food supply with the constraint of efficient resource utilization.
