Watch Ag Fuel Create a Chicken Dish;
Ga. Youngsters Needs Closely You Could Win $10,000
Go Hog Wild
About 900 Georgia youngsters will go hog wild this spring. It happens every year.
Starting in late February and running through the end of March
more than three thousand young people - all of them 4-H Club and FFA members will participate in local, district and state steer, heifer and market hog shows. On February 17 there will be four district market hog shows: Statesboro, Macon, Athens and Tifton. The shows start around 1:30 PM
(Our guest columist this week is Dr. M. K. Cook, Ph.D, Extension Animal Scientist, U. of Ga., Athens 30602.)____________
and by the next day the district winners will be on their way to Macon for the state show.
Most of these young people will have spent 20 or more hours a week feeding, grooming and training their entries. They learn responsibility, fair play and hard work even if they don't win a blue ribbon.
But only the "top end" will make it to the State Fairgrounds in Macon where the grand and reserve grand champions are picked on Monday, February 19.
Beef cattle shows start a little earlier and end a little later. Four-H Club and FFA members picked out their calves last fall and they have spent most of the year getting them ready for the big shows. Just breaking a calf to a halter takes weeks of patient work on the part of the young handlers.
Once the shows start, the hard work - or lack of it - is easy to spot. The first big show of the season is at Macon on March 3 when 340 heifers, registered and commercial, in 13 different breeds compete for the trophy.
But the real elimination starts with the local and district shows. Not all counties have local shows. Those that do depend heavily on local donors and agribusinesses to help sponsor the event.
District shows start on March 30 in Tifton, Augusta and Macon. Lawrenceville district show starts the following day. More than 650

farm and all other agricultural use is still in effect. Any periods of "tight-gasoline" supplies should be watched closely.
Allocations are still based on the amount of fuel used. If that useage changes, suppliers should be informed.
Under federal law it is required that suppliers be notified as early as possible, and kept up-dated, in writing, of any anticipated increases in agricultural gasoline useage.

Georgia has received $400,000 in federal funds for emergency energy assistance to the state's poor and elderly, Georgia Department of Human Resources officials have announced.
The money can be used immediately, statewide, to help buy fuel, pay utility bills, to buy blankets or other cold weather supplies and to insulate some homes.
All the money must be committed for use by March 15, 1979. Citizens over 60 years of age and those receiving Social Security Supplemental Income will be given priority.

coming home each year and swooping and twittering make them ideal garden pets.
Purple martin enthusiasts use either natural or plastic gourds for martin houses. The houses must be clean to attract birds. If you have permanent martin gourd houses, pull out the old nesting with a coat hangar. Flush out the plastic gourds with the garden hose. If you use dried gourds, it may be easier to replace the whole houses.
Keep vines and tree limbs away from your purple martin colony. Birds get squeamish if they think cats, squirrels or other tree-climbing animals can get to them.
The company who makes plastic martin gourds is monitoring when the first 'scout' bird arrives and how soon thereafter the purple martins return. Drop them a note and let them know when you see your first purple martin. Their address is: Plastic Martin Gourds, P.O. Box 3973, Augusta 30904.
Chicken Contest Box 28158 Central Station Washington, D. C. 20005. Entry forms are not required but name, address and phone number must be written on each recipe. Enter as often as you like but each recipe must be on a separate sheet of paper.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, February 14,1979
Dear Editor:
I have some horseradish plants that have been in the ground for three years.
A couple of weeks ago I dug some small and large roots to make horseradish. I cleaned the roots, peeled them and put them in the blender, added one cup of vinegar, three tablespoons of sugar and some salt. The horseradish has a bitter taste and I don't know why. Could the roots be immature or over mature? Do I need to peel the outer layer off the roots? I need j help.

Bulletin'
Dear W., Rome: For shame! How can we answer your questions without a phone number or address. Please call our office so that we can contact you.
The plant referred to as a gourd in the Bible is actually the familiar cas-
tor bean tree which is grown by lots of Georgians.
For many years people have had a hard time imagining how a 'gourd vine' could shade Jonah (Jonah 4:5, 6, 7). It is not difficult, however, to visualize a castor bean tree with its mammoth leaves springing up overnight to shade the weary prophet.
The castor bean tree, or castor oil plant, produces several familiar varieties. The best known type is the "palm of Christ' likened unto an open hand extended in blessing.
The flower spikes of Ricinus cornmunis are dark red and contain the seed pods for future year's growth.
Castor bean trees grow quickly.
Their stems are hollow and they wither quickly with handling, as did
Jonah's shade tree many years ago.
Can you tell me what these seeds are? I found them in some canned peas I had cooked for supper.
E.G. College Park The seeds you found are buckwheat seeds and are not harmful. However, they should not be in the peas. The company has been notified and the processing problem corrected.
I received an ad in the mail about this insecticide which claims one treatment provides a lifetime guarantee. Does it really work?
W.P. Cartersville According to our pesticide specialist, the product is not registered with the department and should not be sold in the state. As to the claims that are made, it is unlikely they could be supported.

steers and 340 heifers have entered the four shows.
Only about 300 cattle make it to the state finals in Athens on April 2. The two hundred or so young people that bring them will spend night and day in the barns grooming the animals to perfection. And, it's not unusual to find a few of them curled up asleep in the hay next to their animals.
Junior livestock projects in 4-H and FFA help young people develop responsibility and character. They feed and care for their animals, thus learning about animal nutrition and veterinary science. They learn to get along with other people and to win or lose with a smile. It's all part of developing young men and women to be leaders in the future.
Imported Birds
(Continued From Page 1)
certificate obtained for the bird in the country of origin. The current limit of two birds per family would remain in effect.
Reasoning behind the proposed new legislation is very simple to poultrymen across the nation. The tragic epidemic of exotic Newcastle disease that swept across southern California in 1971-73 was a terrible loss for those producers involved. This highly contagious disease of most bird species was introduced by pet birds from South America before there were any bird import rules.
