1979Bad Year
For Pine Beetle
The summer of 1979 brought Georgia one of its most severe outbreaks of the dreaded Southern Pine Beetle. There still remains widespread evidence of the insect damage in many counties in the central part of the state.
Forest industries throughout the state have been extremely coop-
erative in buying beetle-killed timber and many landowners were able to realize some compensation from the trees t~~^jJF destroyed by the iMM^^^te bisect; however, IT^^B only about one$ flB half of the killed trees have been salvaged. Survey flights in August conducted by the Forestry Commission revealed a total of 10,628 spots state-

We are currently salvaging about 60,000 cords per month. A total of 243,444 cords has been salvaged since the first of the year.
According to Terry Price, a Commission entomologist, there will be substantial beetle broods overwintering this year to cause continued mortality in the spring of

Georgia leads the nation in exporting peanuts and is second in sending poultry to foreign markets. During 1978 peanuts and peanut oil exports from the state exceeded $116 million, putting it at the top of export commodities from

Forestry Commission demonstrations show how timber that used to be wasted can be utilized to produce energy resources. A feller-buncher, at left, pinches off trees at their base and lays them in a pile. A machine known as a chip harvester, second photo, picks up the trees with a hydraulic arm, pushes

them into grinding blades and blows the chips into a tractor trailer. In the right photo a 21 ton pile of chips is the result of 55 minutes work by the chip harvester. The chips can be burned as fuel or used to make methane gas. The
chip system is one of several new energy innovations.

OUTl INE 'MAP
SHOWING
COUNTIES

Epidemic counties. (1 or more spots/ 1,000 acres host type.) Counties with less than 1 spot/1,000 o acres host type.

Guernseys were developed on the island of Guernsey, a small Channel Island between France and England. The first records of this breed show that around 960 A.D. farmers on this tiny island imported cattle from Normandy and Brittany. When these cattle were cross-bred the Guernsey breed was developed.
Shipping records indicate that in 1830 or 1831 Captain Prince stopped at Guernsey Island and bought two heifers and one bull. He gave these cattle to his brother who was a farmer on Cow Island in New Hampshire. On this island, which was later renamed Guernsey Island in America, the breed prospered and became established.
The Guernseys have several distinguishable characteristics. The most desirable trait is the high percentage of butterfat consistently produced which makes the milk a golden color.
The Guernseys are recognizable by their medium size (800 to 1400 pounds), fawn and white colorings and distinctive markings. The muzzle is always flesh or buff colored and the switch (tip of the tail) is white. They have slightly longer faces than Jerseys with tapered horns, inclined forward.
The breed has exhibited its adaptability to extreme weather conditions. In 1933 Admiral Byrd took several Guernseys on an Antartic expedition where a calf was born to one of the cows. There are also several commercial herds thriving in tropical countries such as Puerto Rico.

DON'T OVERLOAD
Overloading a freezer with warm food slows freezing time and wastes energy. Extension Service home economists say it's a good idea to first chill cooked foods hi cold water and then put them hi the freezer.

1980. Weather is a very critical factor determining the severity of beetle activity in the spring.
Temperatures seldom dip low enough over a sustained period to cause significant beetle mortality in Georgia. Low temperatures and wet conditions influence other factors which help to reduce the beetle population.
The winter months are the best time for keeping beetle damage to a minimum. Our recommended control measures call for the immediate removal of all known beetle infested trees, plus cutting a buffer zone of 40 to 100 feet of green and uninfested trees surrounding the killed trees.
The beetle is hi a dormant stage during the cold months. This period of inactivity gives the landowner a chance to remove the infested spots which is the only real control we can recommend for the forested area.
We have observed the unnecessary removal of many trees in an attempt to control the insect. Large tracts have been clear-cut when only one damaged spot was discovered.
During the height of the Southern Pine Beetle invasion of our forests this summer, we found the pest
was killing pines in 79 counties. The infestation reached epidemic proportions in 24 counties.
For several years the Commission has made periodic flights over every section of the state to keep abreast of insect and disease activities. When significant spots of infestation are detected, the landowner is contacted by Commission personnel and advised of measures that should be taken to help prevent the damage from spreading.
Although winter months will check the activity of the deadly

O
beetle, it will not by any means mark the end of our problem with this stubborn insect. It will be back to some extent in the spring and landowners can be assured that the Forestry Commission will continue to maintain a constant vigil across the state to keep track of its activity.
In the meantime, all landowners and others who have problems concerning the Southern Pine Beetle - or any other forest pest or disease - are urged to contact the nearest district office or county unit of the Commission.
Our entomologists and foresters will provide assistance to all landowners in marking out these spots of killed trees and the buffer strip and will aid in advising on timber cutters and loggers and marketing and sale opportunities for both pulpwood and sawtimber.
During the past few years, insects have killed more timber in Georgia than have all our wildfires! We urge landowners to exert every effort to cut and remove all killed trees before spring.
