Insect Control
Key to Progress
Insects are among the most important enemies of mankind, attacking and devouring his food, fiber, and shelter. They are important vectors of disease, and have been responsible for the deaths of countless millions of people throughout our recorded history.
It is estimated that in 1977, the economic losses in the state of Geor-
gia due to insect damage was over 550 million dollars.
The Georgia Entomological Society is a professional organization of entomologists. Its membership over the years has maintained an excellent blend of entomological expertise from various

colleges and universities, state and federal agencies, and private industry.
The society presently has 578 members from 38 states, the District of Columbia, and 14 foreign countries. The well-being of Georgia residents is directly affected by the work of many of these individuals.
The society was founded in 1937 to foster studies on insects, and to promote the welfare of the state of Georgia by encouraging association, discussion, and exchange of ideas among all entomologists.
Many of the insect control measures used in Georgia today were developed directly or indirectly by members of this society. The society encourages the preparation, reading and publication of papers in order to disseminate entomological information to the general public. This latter goal is accomplished through the publication and distribution of the Journal of the Georgia Entomological Society.
Each year, our society, through the P. W. Fattig Scholarship Program, sponsors an undergraduate student in entomology at the University of Georgia. We are very proud of the young men and women who have used this program to begin their careers in entomology.

QQ consumer line... Wagon Train Brings Gold

Please clarify whether or not stores should charge sales tax on returnable soft drink bottles.
B.J. Atlanta In checking with the Sales & Use Tax Division of The Georgia Department of Revenue, we learned that where a deposit is required for the return of soft drink bottles the tax should be collected on the sales price which includes the bottle deposit. When such bottles are returned for the deposit, the amount refunded to the customer should be plus sales tax.
We have a very bad situation in our community. An outsider has rented land and is feeding cattle on the raw mash from the distillery in the very center of a thickly populated community. The flies, pollution and odor are becoming intolerable.
R. B. Albany It is not illegal to feed mash from a distillery to livestock. The other problems you mentioned, i.e., "flies, pollution and odor", fall under the jurisdiction of the local health department. Sanitarians within the department can determine if a health hazard exists. We will ask them to check for you if you like.

To Regild Capitol Dome

The shattered dome of the state's Capitol will soon, once again, glimmer with the brilliance of Georgia gold. Thanks to the efforts of the Dahlonega Jaycees, a "Wagon Train" carrying 43 ounces of the precious metal will travel the 77 miles from the Georgia foothills to Atlanta, enabling the famous dome to be refurbished.

John Wisdom's Ride
Recreated in Rome
In celebration of Rome Heritage Holidays, a trail ride from Cedar Bluff, Alabama to Rome has been planned. The ride will follow the route of John Wisdom's historic ride who is credited with saving Rome from federal troups during the War Between the States.
The ride will start October 19 at the intersection of Highways 9 and 35 in Cherokee County, Alabama. After camping out Friday night the group will leave at 8 AM sharp and ride the 23 miles into Rome, Georgia.
After participating in a parade, the riders will camp out at the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds Saturday night.
The ride is sponsored by the Rome Tourist and Convention Commission, the City of Rome and the Rome Chamber of Commerce. For more information contact Billy or Lorie Puryear, 404/232-1950, nights only.

The brilliant peak of Atlanta's skyline was first goldplated in 1958 with a similar amount of gold panned from streams which run through the Dahlonega mountains.
For sometime, the paper-thin goldleafing has been flaking off as weather and time have taken their toll on its original brilliance.
The Dahlonega Jaycees spearheaded the project to raise more than $250,000 necessary to re-gild the dome. As in the original project, the gold comes from the hills of Dahlonega by virtue of the gifts of many Georgians throughout the state.
The method of delivery of the precious metal is somewhat unusual. It will be transported by wagon train, guided and filled with Georgians of all ages and walks of life. The train for the journey to Atlanta will be formed on November 22, during the

USDA Schedules
Hearings for Beef

Pork production is one of Georgia's largest agricultural industries. According to recent figures, our state ranks eighth hi swine production in the United States. To recognize the importance of this industry, Governor George Busbee declared October 14 - 20 as Georgia Pork Week. At the proclamation signing were Valerie Fuller, Georgia Pork Queen, with her parents Mr. and Mrs.
Hughie Fuller, Governor Busbee, Fred Haley, National Director of the Georgia Pork Producers and Roger Bernard, Executive Vice President, Georgia Pork Producers.

U. S. Department of Agriculture officials have recommended establishing a nationally coordinated research and information program for beef. USDA's recommended decision is based on evidence gathered during a series of beef order public hearings across the country earlier this year.
Written comments and exceptions will be accepted through November 5. Five copies of each should be directed to Hearing Clerk, Room 1077S, USDA, Washington, D.C., 20250. All such information is subject to public review.
Under the recommended order, a Beef Board composed of producers would collect assessments on sales of cattle. Such funds would be used for research, producer and consumer information, cattle, beef and beef products. The program would be monitored by USDA's agriculture marketing service.
The project is authorized by the Beef Research & Information Act of 1976. If established, the program would be similar to those already in operation for potatoes, cotton and eggs.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, October 17,1979

In last week's MARKET BULLETIN a picture of white faced Herefords appeared with our "What is a Holstein" column. In our series on cattle breeds, this picture should have appeared with this week's
"What is a Hereford" column.

Wagon Train
(Continued From Page 1)
Thanksgiving holidays, at the Dahlonega Little League Ball Park, leaving on its journey at 8:00 a.m., November 23.
The long trek will conclude as the train parades through downtown Atlanta November 26 at 11:00 a.m., scheduled to arrive for a ceremony at the State Capitol at noon. The gold will be formally presented to Governor George Busbee during ceremonies at the Capitol,
All those interested in participating in the wagon train should contact Colonel Charles Ricketts, Post Office Box 38305, Atlanta, Georgia (404) 656-3293.

Hereford and Angus, according to most cattle experts, run about even, both in number and popularity among Georgia beef cattle. Cattlemen contend, however, that all the Herefords in Georgia slightly outnumber the other beef breeds and account for an estimated 731,000 head across the state.
Developed in England, the Hereford was brought to the United States in the 1850's, primarily as Kentucky breeding stock. However, it took another 30 years for the Hereford to become popular across the nation.
An outstanding characteristic of the breed, according to the wife of the President of the Georgia Hereford Association, Mrs. Cliff Flood, is the animals' "good disposition and docile manner." The Floods have raised and preferred the Hereford breed since

Insect Control

Our society holds an annual meeting which allows members to present papers on various aspects of their work, and to meet with other workers who share common interests and goals. Our next meeting will be held March 19-21 at the Ramada Inn in Macon, Georgia.
For additional information on this meeting, address inquiries to Mr. DonNordlund, Secretary-Treasurer, Georgia Entomological Society, USDA Southern Grain Insects Laboratory, Tifton, 31794.
they began raising cattle on their Newnan farm in 1961.
There is a separate strain of the breed known as the Polled Hereford. They are born without horns and even have their own association in Georgia.
The President of the Polled Hereford Association, Steve Roberts, says he has raised Polled Herefords since graduating from high school in 1965.
The Alapaha cattleman says he now has some 90 head, preferring them because they cross with any breed, calve easily and thrive on a grass diet.
Herefords, often called "white faces", are predominantly marked with white patches on their chests, flanks, lower legs and on the switches (tips) of their tails.
