Tech Research

Helps Farmers

Twenty years ago, research en-

gineers were seldom found on the

farm. But today, Georgia farmers

are depending more and more on

Georgia Tech's engineering ex-

pertise.

Two of the most recent ex-

amples are in the area of dairy pro-

blems. Agron-

omists have been

able to develop

highly nutritious

grasses for cattle,

but cows some-

times won't eat

j what's good for

j them. Even when

the new grasses

are made to look

exactly

the regular grasses,

cows still reject them. Apparently,

the cows can differentiate among

grasses on the basis of odor.

A Georgia Tech research team is

attempting to identify the causes of

the different odors. If the Tech team

can find out what causes the cows to turn up their noses at one grass and not another, then grasses which the cows now reject can be sprayed and made acceptable to bovine tastes.
These research efforts are but a small part of Georgia Tech's expanding work in agriculture. In fact, research for agriculture has become a major area of study at Georgia Tech during the last five years.
However, as Dr. William Flatt pointed out in a recent Market Bulletin, there has been a drastic cut in federal agricultural funding. This seems to dictate three responses: 1) Georgia farmers and researchers must do a better job of communicating needs and skills to Washington; 2) we must develop state and local resources; and 3) we must continue to prove to private enterprise that money invested in research pays off in added income.
At Tech, our energy research has been particulary profitable, as we assist farmers to find workable economical substitutes for scarce fuels such as natural gas and oil. Toward this end, Tech has conducted research in waste utilization, energy conservation and alternate energy sources.
Currently, the bulk of this work (Continued On Page 7)

Georgia leads the nation in the poultry and egg business. Cash receipts in 1978 from that segment of the state's agriculture totaled more than $825
million. There are more than 11 million chickens slaughtered weekly in Georgia for commercial use.

Innovations Help Relieve

Heat Stress in Ga. Poultry

Georgia's tremendous poultry industry has so far escaped any major set-

backs this year due to heat stress.

This is a highly favorable comparison to the summer of 1978 when long

periods of near 100 degree weather killed thousands of birds and cut egg

production as much as 15 percent.

Spokesmen in various areas of the

Ga. Youth Excels In Conservation

A week-long workshop dealing with the conservation of natural resources recently brought students throughout the state to South Georgia College in Douglas.
It was the 18th annual session for the conference and marked the second consecutive year it was held on the South Georgia campus. Some 300 students attended, representing 128 Georgia counties.
Virtually every area of natural resource conservation was emphasized including soil conservation, wild life management and forestry.
A number of this year's participants were formally recognized for

their individual achievements. Three of the students received scholarships: Troy Marsh, Statesboro, winner of a one year scholarship to a college of his choice; Tina Gross, LaFayette,

and Tim Simpson, Kingsland, who each won fufiyear scholarships to South Georgia College and $25 cash

Dear Editor: Four weeks ago I bought a four year old AQH A roan
mare from a MARKET BULLETIN advertiser. When we first looked at her we noticed she was limping a little. We were told she had been standing in a small stall and had a bad case of thrush and the vet had told him just to keep medicine on it and she would be fine.
Well, we believed this and bought her. After four weeks she was still limping so we called the man we were told shod her and he says he was never told that she was limping and she did not have thrust at all.
After checking back with the man we bought her from I was told by him, "Well, you bought her. She's your problem now." I hope other people don't have the same problem.
Name withheld by request (Editor's note: Buyer beware! If you are not an expert and suspect a problem, seek advice and opinion from a qualified, objective source. Know what you are buying.)

group since 1967." Georgia's milk production
from 1977 through 1978 was up slightly compared with the overall situation across the country. U.S. milk production for 1978 totaled 121.9 billion
pounds, down slightly from 1977's 122.7 billion pounds.
In '77 Georgia's production was one billion, 288-million
pounds, and in 1978 it topped one billion, 290-million
pounds. Government sources agree
that milk production conditions in Georgia, as well as
the U.S. overall, appear to favor expansion this year.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that total 1979 milk production is ex-
pected to range some one to

The warm summer months traditionally have been the
time of year set aside to salute the dairy farmers and related industries in our nation.
The recognition comes because of their continued diligent work throughout the year to provide consumers with an abundant supply of fresh, high quality milk and dairy products at a competi-
tive price. It is frequently boasted that
America is the best fed nation in the world.
Milk and other dairy products play a key role in that posture forming one of the four basic food groups.
Milk is a major source of high quality protein, calcium and many other essential vitamins and minerals, with this nutrition at a cost which has increased less in recent
times than all other major food groups.
From January 1978 through January 1979, the average national retail price of milk and dairy products increased by 11.7 percent. This can be compared with a 13.3 percent increase in overall food prices.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index illustrates that while milk and dairy product prices have increased over past years, they have been "consistently more stable, and have risen significantly less than any other major food

two percent higher than 1978. State officials say Georgia's production may go higher. During the first four months of
this year the state's dairy farmers had produced more than 451-million pounds of milk.
"Milk's The One" has been
selected as this year's dairy theme to help describe the many contributions of milk and the dairy industry to our American way of life.
Government officials on
every level along with numerous consumer groups agree that the warm summer months provide a natural time to pause and reflect on the "significant contributions to our health and economy made by the dairy farm families of
Georgia and the nation."

If one-fourth inch of water was measured as an average for the 15 minute period, it will require about one hour to apply one inch of water.
Do not water again until the grass needs it. Stretching the time interval between waterings to as many days as possible is good. By all means, avoid the every day h'ght type of sprinkling.
Do not apply water faster than it can be absorbed by the soil. Water running into the gutter is of no value.
ENERGY FROM WOOD
Planting fast-growing trees close together and harvesting the stems or sprouts frequently may be a new way to produce energy, according to a Cooperative Extension Service forester. Ted Walker says sycamore is a good species for this purpose. Current research in Georgia shows that eight tons of dry wood can be produced per acre per year. Improvements in genetics and cultural practices could conceivably get the yield up to 16 tons per acre.
Tech Research
(Continued From Page 1) has been hi the poultry industry. With the guidance of the Georgia Poultry Federation and with funds from the Department of Energy and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Tech's Engineering Experiment Station has been able to make real progress in the energy area for poultry farmers, and poultry and egg processing facilities.
At the Gold Kist processing plant in Ellijay, for example, an extensive effort is being made to incorporate a number of practical energy conservation techniques, The project involves a detailed study of where and how energy is used in the plant, as well as the installation of equipment to reduce overall plant energy consumption. Results to date have been extremely encouraging. For example, scalder steam consumption has been reduced by 50 percent.
Energy conservation in hatcheries is also being studied, and several areas where energy can be saved have been identified. One is by recovering the heat of exhaust air from egg incubators and using it for space heating. Projections indicate that a 5-10 percent reduction hi space heating costs is a reasonable expectation.
A Tech study of methods used for lighting broiler growout houses showed that electric bills could be reduced considerably by replacing the tungsten light bulbs used on most farms with fluorescent lights.
In another study, Tech researchers have evaluated the energy efficiency of different types of brooders used by the poultry industry. The researchers have also made a study of ventilating fan efficiency.
We realize, of course, that energy conservation can do just so much to lessen dependence on scarce fuels. Alternate energy sources must be found, and toward this end Tech is actively researching the use of solar and wood energy.
Two poultry growout houses in north Georgia are now using solar energy systems designed by Tech to supply heat. Solar energy can also

Certain pesticides, because of their human toxicity, environmental or other potential hazard, have been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] for "Restricted Use." Such pesticides can be purchased and used only by certified applicators. Pesticide products which are appropriate and effective for home use are classified for "General Use" and are available for purchase and use by the general public.

Georgia cattlemen and agribusiness leaders study agricultural production and marketing, land use and management during a week long study
sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service and C&S National Bank. Georgia Cattlemen's Association President Sam Hay, Covington [1-r], A. J.

be used for agricultural drying; we have looked at the potential of solar collectors for the drying of tobacco, peanuts and forage.
Wood is another alternate energy source which we fee] can be applied in a number of areas. It is an especially promising energy source for Georgia, because our state has an abundance of commercial forests. To date, a very successful use of wood has been made in a poultry growout house in which a Tech-designed wood-fired heating system was installed. Last whiter, this system provided almost 90 percent of the heating needs to raise some 32,000 birds.
Two other alternate energy sources are being studied for agriculture. One is animal waste material. In Gumming, for example, methane gas has been produced from chicken manure through a process known as anaerobic digestion. The other is the use of small-scale hydroelectric power on farms in North Georgia. Tech plans a feasibility study on this hi the near future.
Tech has expanded also in areas other than energy, although still primarily in connection with the poultry industry. Current or recent projects have included a study to minimize egg breakage, an effort to reduce noise levels in processing plants, improved treatment of poultry waste water, and a mechanization study to reduce losses hi processing lines.
While these projects represent a much more intensive and diversified effort in agricultural research than previously, we feel that we have really only scratched the surface of Tech's potential to address the problems of farmers and processors. As we approach the 1980's, we hope and expect that Tech will more fully utilize its extensive human and technological resources in assisting Georgia's agricultural community.

Georgia Poultry Innovation Helps
(Continued From Page 1]

after last year's disastrous situation," Mr. Thomason
explained. More efficient cooling sys-
tems for huge chicken houses along with better insulation, a reduction of the number of birds in houses and coops, and low energy diets are the major areas which have con-
tributed to fewer losses and better egg production this
year. A proper hot weather diet
for chickens is viewed as a major step toward preventing heat stress losses. Researchers are convinced that more calories from dietary fat and less from carbohydrates increase feed intake in broilers subjected to heat
stress. According to researchers
at the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, the utilization of a high fat diet is considerably more effective in a high temperature environ-
ment than under cool conditions.
A number of research projects comtinue in the area of diet as it relates to heat stress
in poultry. In another related section
of the poultry industry, Tom Hodge, a major live-hauler in the state says it was not unusual last summer to lose as much as 50 percent of a truck load of chickens due to heat
stress.

Fewer cages to a truckload, less birds per cage and overall better ventilation have helped to drastically cut back the mortality rate ''n the trucking segment of he industry.
A number of experj -, in the field say they are in pressed with improvements which have been made this summer. They encouraged c ontinued research for more ways to fight the seasonal heat battle which confronts the poultry industry in Georgia.
"It was a wait and see situation this summer," explains one poultryman. "We just didn't know what was going to work until it was tried ... most of the new innovations paid big dividends."
BETTER MILEAGE
A car that averages 15 miles per gallon gets about 21 percent better gas mileage at 55 miles per hour than it does at 70, according to Cooperative Extension Service engineers.
GOT MOSQUITOES?
If you've got mosquitoes around the house, check the birdbath or look for toys the kids may have left lying around the yard. Mosquitoes breed in water-holding containers such as these.

SPIDER MITES

ENERGY TIP

Spider mites are tiny pests that feed on the undersides of leaves of many shrubs and flowers. This feeding causes a yellow, speckled pattern on the tops of leaves of such plants as marigolds and impatiens. Entomologists at the University of Georgia Extension Service say applications of insecticides containing Kelthane provide the best control.

The cost of energy goes up with the temperature. Using vents to pull heat and moisture from attics, kitchens and laundries to the outside will help keep both down, advise Extension Service specialists.
CLEAN GLASSES
Using rubbing alcohol, ginger ale or spay-on window cleaner to clean sunglasses that are smudged with suntan oil.
DON'T MIX
Mixing ammonia or toilet bowl cleaner with chlorine bleach may be hazardous to your health. These products, when mixed, release dangerous gases.
THECAMP COOK
Makes no difference if you vacation in a tent or in a trailer camp cooks face the problem of feeding a hungry family. Extension Service specialists suggest you choose foods that travel safely without special handling. Dehydrated soups, ready-to-eat cereals, powdered instant products and canned foods present no special problems. Just do some advance planning, so you won't spend all your time in the great outdoors cooking.

Try wild chives if you want to add just a little something extra to that baked potato already covered with sour cream.
This little member of the onion family is not hard to find. It's common, not only throughout this country, but worldwide in temperate regions.
Chives are those little dark green hollow-leaf clumps of onion-scented weeds that can either be a treasure in the garden or an eyesore to the lover of the weedless lawn.
They can be cultivated, bought from garden centers, or grown from seed. Cultivated and wild chives appear very much alike, both with fluffy lavender flower heads.
Whether wild or in the garden, chives are available fresh over a long season. They can be potted in the fall for fresh herbs all winter.
Drying chives is another method of providing a continuous supply of seasoning. Clip them just above the ground, tie the stems together and wash thoroughly, snipping off any brown tips that may appear.
Untie the bunch and cut into short lengths. Place the pieces on a wire drying rack or in a colander in a dark, dry in a warm area for about a week or until they are brittle.
Chives in this form should be stored airtight, however, they can be easily frozen for later use.
Chives can be used in most any form for seasoning ... fresh, frozen or dried.
GRADE A MILK Grade A milk or cream products must meet requirements of the U.S. Public Health Service's "Grade A Pasturized Milk Ordinance." This means, according to Cooperative Extension Service marketing specialists, that the milk must come from healthy cows, be produced and processed under sanitary conditions, and be pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria.

Getting Rid of Roaches

Starts with Clean House

Roaches are probably the most unpopular household bug. They are especially fond of our Georgia climate and without consistent control, roaches will move in, breed and become a pest to your home and a hazard to your health.

There are several varieties of roaches. They are flattened, fastrunning nocturnal insects. Roaches look for warmth, moisture and food. During the day, roaches hide in sheltered dark places. At night, they look for food but will feed on bookbindings and fabrics as well.
Roaches leave an oily residue where they walk over dishes, counters and floors. The secretion comes from their scent glands and is most offensive. Besides its bad smell, it can spread germs and
disease. The single most important way to
control roaches is to keep a clean house. This does not mean that a clean house can not have roaches. Roaches creep in through cracks in flooring and windows. They are brought in with bagged produce
such as potatoes, too. However, to make roach control
methods effective, the house must first be clean. Do not leave dirty dishes, garbage or trash lying
around. Store food in tight containers,
avoid spilling flour, cereals and other dry materials in cabinets or on pantry shelves. Do not leave remnants of food on tables or in the kitchen sink overnight. Sweep up any crumbs or bits of food from the floor and keep waste materials in tightly covered garbage cans.
Roaches live in cracks around sinks, and cabinets, behind loose baseboards, inside drawers, in the motor compartment of refrigerators and on the underside of tables and
chairs. There are almost as many roache
control sprays and preparations on sale as there are varieties of roaches. Commercial preparations should contain one of the following ingredients: 1 percent Baygon, 0.5 percent Diazinon ready mixed, labeled for home use, 2 percent Ronnel (Korlan) solution of 1 percent dust, and 0.5 percent Vapona.

Do not use insecticides that are labeled for outdoor use inside the home. They will leave unsightly residues. The reverse is true for controlling pests in the garden. Do not use household sprays outside.
Many roach control mixtures contain boric acid powder or borax. Boric acid powder is very effective. It can be sprinkled directly where you want bug control, such as behind cabinets, or under the sink. For other areas, you may prefer a nonvisible spray.
There are also homemade roach preparation which are effective and cheap. The only danger is that they are often appealing to children as well as roaches. Use extreme caution.
Mix together four tablespoons boric acid, two. tablespoons flour and one tablespoon sugar. Put mixture in bottle caps or other small open containers and place them where the roaches will run across the mixture.
Remember, roach control is only effective if household sanitation is consistently maintained.
A Gardening Education
Costs Only Your Time
Have you ever wished you knew more about soils, fertilizers, pest controls, lawns, flowering plants, vegetables, fruit trees and other areas of horticulture?
The DeKalb Extension Service is offering the University of Georgia Master Gardener Program starting September 4, two nights each week, through November 2. Classes will be held at North Fulton Government Building, 7741 Roswell Road, NE (north of Abernathy Road). Reservations are required.
While there is no cost to attend the program, each resident who attends and participants in training sessions will be expected to volunteer a matching number of hours of their time to the Extension Service.
This time can be paid back in office work, assisting hi mini-clinics, gardening lectures or any other area which is comfortable for the volunteer and useful to the Extension Service.
The purpose of the Extension Master Gardener program is to train volunteers who have gardening experience and a desire to help others. For more information, application form and class schedule, call 371-2821.

PLENTY OF BEEF
Beef supplies are down from the record levels of recent years, but ore expected to continue adequate because of large supplies of competing meats. Production rates average 10 to 12 percent below year-earlier levels, and about 15 percent below the 1976-78 average for Julv.
