A Question
For Cattlemen
Cattle producers should give serious thought about the most practical and economical way to extend the productive period of bermuda and bahia grass pastures.
These summer pastures usually provide 130 to 150 days of good grazing. Another 60 to 90 days grazing can be provided by overseeding with winter annuals. Research reports indicate that 250 to 300 pounds of yearling cattle growth can be expected from a good crop of winter annuals overseeded on warm season perennials.
Winter annual grasses and legumes may be used alone or in seed mixture for overseeding. Producers

tension Service, University of Georgia Col-
lege of Agriculture Athens, 30602).____
should consider some of the basic characteristics of these crops in making a decision which is best for a particular situation.
Overseeding of bermuda and bahia grass pastures should be done in late fall. The perennial plants should be almost dormant at the time the new seedings are made. Dormancy of the established perennials will eliminate the competition for light and moisture and allow the new crop to become established.
Overseeding bahia usually requires more land preparation than bermuda pastures. One to two times over with a tandum harrow that is set to penetrate the soil 2-3 inches deep is satisfactory. A drag implement behind the harrow will aid in establishing a good seedbed and smoothing the soil surface. Deep penetration of the harrow is not needed.
Chemicals may be used to desiccate bermuda and bahia in early fall to eliminate competition from these established plants before they become dormant. Paraquat is the chemical often used for this purpose. It is usually most beneficial when a sod seeder is used for planting. A desiccant is not needed when the soil is harrowed.
Grain drills or broadcast type seeders may be used for planting the seed. A grain drill with double disk furrow openers is an ideal method of seeding on a lightly disked sod.

What causes some cucumbers to have a metallic or bitter taste?
M. A. Athens The maturity of the vegetable determines the sweetness. The younger ones are sweeter, while the older ones have a bitter flavor. It may also be a sign of long storage.
The new, open-air downtown fanners' market in Savannah is a hit. Located across from the Savannah Visitor's Center on West Broad, the multi-striped colorful canopies which highlight the facility provide a friendly welcome for consumers who take the opportunity to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at farm prices. Opened June 22, the new market is sponsored jointly by the Department of Agriculture and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
Farmers, Beekeepers
I am really not certain what to look for when buying seed. I want to make a better choice for my fall garden than I did this spring.
B.B. Nahunta All the information you need is on the label. Germination tests are run on the seed to assure you that the facts given are accurate. We have mailed you some literature which should be helpful.

Communication Vital For Farming Neighbors
Some people don't like to get dirt under their fingernails but they don't like to wear gloves either. To remedy this situation, scratch a bar of soap before you hit the dirt. The soap with any 'acquired' dirt will wash away easily.
To protect your corn from birds (and early frost) place a paper bag over the ears after they're pollinated. Also, according to M. L. Bennett (Ware County), corn worms and black beetles are prevented by applying several drops of mineral oil to the silks at the tip of the ear as soon as silks begin to dry and turn brown. Mr. Bennett cautions that if you do this before the ear is pollinated your corn will be underdeveloped.

Committee Hearing
A hearing to discuss the Agricultural Commodity Commissions is planned for August 8 at 10 AM at the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, in room 201, at 10 AM.
Georgia's beekeepers and the state's farmers need to keep in close com-
munication with each other ... particularly when a farm or garden is in
close proximity to an apiary.
The reason the routine use of a
variety of pesticides on most farms
can be harmful to bees.
Where there are plants close at
hand, bees will naturally seek them
out for pollination. Normally, that
would be an ideal situation, benefit-
ing both bees and plants.
However, the necessary use of
pesticides, in many cases, creates a
deadly situation for the bees and at
the same time breeds dissatisfaction
between the beekeeper and the
farmer.
This need not be the situation, ac-
cording to State Agriculture Depart-
ment Entomologist Carl Scott.
"With a little communication and
coordination," says Mr. Scott, "the
harm done to the bees-can be mini-
mized.

Glowed Chewy?
Ground Cherry is a plant which can be used in a number of jam and jelly type preparations, but, extreme care must be taken in selecting the proper species because some are known to be poisonous.
It is advisable to seek expert identification before eating any portion of the plant in any form.
However, when the proper species has been determined it can add an unusual delight at mealtime.
Known by a variety of names, it may also be referred to as Husk Tomato, Strawberry Tomato, Japanese or Chinese Lantern or Cape Gooseberry.
It is found in virtually every corner of the country flourishing in both moist and dry soil, in wooded areas or even on the prairies.
In addition to jams and jellies, it can be used in other preserves and many times finds its way into various pies and sauces.
The ground cherry genus contains a wide variety of species all with edible fruit. They all differ from each other in some detail, but all are alike in producing small round fruits inside papery bladders or husks that appear like Japanese or Chinese lanterns.
The ground cherry takes on numerous forms with some plants annuals and some perennials. There are varieties which are low and branching, others are erect, and some have a vining characteristic.
The leaves may be smooth or hairy, toothed or lobed, or smoothedged, and may be tiny or as much as three inches in length.
The flowers, white, yellow, or greenish-yellow, nod from slender stalks at the base of the leaves. They are so slightly lobed that they resemble morning-glory blossoms.
The fruits are about the size of small marbles and pale or golden yellow, or sometime deep blue when ripe. There are soft seeds which should present no problem in any preparation.
Depending on the location, the plant ripens from early summer to mid-November.
Once located wild, it might be desirable to replant for easy access, and continued proper identification.

A Question
(Continued From Page 1)
The best crops for overseeding are larger seed small grain crops of rye and wheat which usually produce forage quicker than small seed crops such as ryegrass and annuals clovers. More seedbed preparation is usually needed for rye and wheat as compared to ryegrass and clovers.
The arrowleaf clover grows well with rye and wheat. Ryegrass will usually establish with little or no seedbed preparation, however, faster growth will usually develop when the soil has been lightly disked.
Ryegrass, or a mixture of clover and ryegrass, usually begins to provide forage later in the winter than rye or wheat, but provides forage 46 weeks later in the spring than does rye or wheat.
Arrowleaf clover will continue to provide some forage into early summer in most situations. A mixture of 60-80 pounds of rye, 15 to 20 pounds of ryegrass and 5-8 pounds of arrowleaf clover has been a successful overseeding mixture for many producers.
Early growth of overseeded pasture requires a good fertilization program. A soil test is the best guide for lime, phosphorous and potassium needs. Adequate soil phosphorous is very critical to early plant development of winter annuals. Nitrogen should be applied at the rate of 50 pounds per acre at planting. A second application of 50 pounds in late winter will produce maximum growth during the spring.
Grazing should be delayed until the winter annuals have developed a good root system and 4 to 6 inches of top growth. Limited grazing with cattle that need high quality feed is usually the most efficient use of this high quality forage.
The annuals forage should be gazed close in late spring to allow for normal development of the bermuda andbahia.

every five or six days. If you do this three times your corn will be bug free and the silks will come off with the husk," according to Mr. Bennett.
In the flower garden, August is the time to prune back summer annuals to encourage late season growth and bloom. Remove old flower heads and discourage seed development.
Bees create a wide range of interest among Georgians and the Department of Agriculture has received numerous request for general information concerning the insect particularly about the difference .between the carpenter bee and the honeybee.
The carpenter bee is somewhat larger and known as a destructive wood borer. The pest can be found around wooden decks of houses and the eaves of homes.
The honey bee, on the other hand, never tunnels into wood, is not a destructive insect, and is considered essential to productive agriculture.
We have received many requests for old-limey garden hints. While most of these methods have not been 'research-tested' they have withstood the test of time. If you have hints to share with our readers, please let us know.

spray." In cases where prolonged periods
of chemical treatment are anticipated hives could be re-located to insure the safety of the bee colonies.
Mr. Scott says, "Common sense and cooperation can go a long way in creating a better understanding between the beekeeper and the farmer. They. can quickly become aware of each others needs if a line of communication is kept open."
The importance of a close tie between the farmer and beekeeper is recognized prominently by the Agriculture Department and is a factor brought to the forefront frequently by apiary inspectors in the Department's Entomology Division.
Apiary inspections are a major effort of the Entomology Division with beekeepers encouraged to avail themselves of the service.
Field inspectors, on request, examine hives and bees to detect indications of American and European Foulbrood disease, wax-moth infestation and a variety of other problems which could endanger healthy bee colonies.
Shippers and package bees and queen bees must have their hives inspected annually and health certificates issued to enable them to be advertised and sold as certified colonies.
This not only provides for diseasefree interstate movement of Georgia bees, but is required of all bees entering the state.

Our thanks to W. C. Ritchie, Malissie Sturges, Nellie Dale, Mrs. Daisy Williford, Geneva Drew, Mary Ponder, Mrs. L. M. Smith, P. W. Jefferson, Mattie Turner, and the many other readers who provided solutions on how to remove the rank taste from homemade lard.
The general concensus of opinion is that you should fry several pota-
toes, some say thick slices, others say very thin, until crisp. The pota-
toes absorb the rank taste from the lard making it suitable for use. The
potatoes also can be eaten after cooking.
