Ga. Ag Students
The University of Georgia in Athens provides a quality education for all its students, but the students enrolled in forestry, home economics, veterinary medicine and agriculture are particularly fortunate. These schools of the "south campus", with 3,000 plus students have joined to form the Ag Hill Council.
In the fall the Ag Hill Council introduces incoming students of agri-
culture to other students on south campus, and familiarizes the freshmen and transfer students with organizations on south campus. This is accomplished by holding a cookout with exhibits of south campus clubs and organizations. Last year over 600 students and friends attended. During the winter we turn our attention to those students who will be

graduating the following spring. The Ag Hill Council and the Young Ag Alumni Associations, along with Career Planning and Placement, sponsor a Perspective Agribusiness Careers Night.
Nearly forty different companies and government representatives come to talk with students about prospective jobs. The night is kicked off by a key note address followed by a question/answer panel discussion. Many students and employees have had great success with finding and filling jobs at this function.
The Ag Hill Council's main event in the spring is the south campus Student Awards Night at which we recognize students who have excelled in academics. The Ag Hill Council also recognizes outstanding leaders in Georgia who have contributed to the further developement of agriculture and youth organizations at the University.
Beyond these main projects, the council is involved with support of other activities promoting south campus and agriculture. South campus students are involved in all projects undertaken by the Ag Hill Council. This involvement helps increase student awareness of campus activities and other state-wide agricultural functions.

Cattlemen Conference
Start'em right keep'em healthy is the theme of the fifth annual Stocker-Finisher Conference to be held at the Holiday Inn in Perry July 31.
The conference, with registration starting at 9:00 a.m., is planned especially for cattlemen interested in stockering or finishing. It is co-sponsored by Georgia Cattlemen's Association and the Cooperative Extension Service.

As the price of a gallon of gasoline reaches for the dollar mark in Georgia new methods of pricing calculations are being pressed into service.

WHEN GAS REACHES A DOLLAR -- The figures motorists will observe on station pumps will reflect only onehalf the actual price and gallons re gistered. The half price system will be used until pumps can be re-de signed to reflect dollar-plus per gal lon figures.

The new system enables the utilization of existing pumps until new machinery can be installed to accurately reflect the higher prices.
Georgia is using a relatively simple interim method. Most pumps across the state will reflect the price of a half gallon of gasoline and register only half the total sale. Of course, to determine the exact total of both figures, they must both be doubled.
All pumps will be clearly marked in all locations where the doubling calibrations must be made.
The Georgia Agriculture Department has the regulatory responsibility of making certain that all accurate gas pump calibrations are constantly maintained.
Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said the "half total sale system is a simple, uniform procedure which is necessary to protect the consuming public."

Shipping Grain from Georgia Port

Saves Time, Moneyfor Farmers

The addition of ten huge storage silos at the Georgia Ports Authority's dry

bulk handling terminal in Savannah is beginning to pay off for many of the

state's farmers.

corn to foreign markets directly

from a home port at a lower cost

eliminating the expensive, mid-step

An example of the value of the

home port availability is reflected in

figures released by Continental

Grain for soybean exports.

Many Georgia farmers can now move their products from a home port rather than transport them to Alabama or South Carolina for ship ment. Ten giant storage silos at the Georgia Ports Authority now mean less transportation costs to state farmers ... costs that can now be-, come profit.

The U. S. House Agriculture Committee has approved legislation substantially raising ceilings on farm and rural development loans.
The action sets the guidelines for congressional authorization for certain money guarantees for the next three years handled by the Farmers Home Administration.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Thomas Foley (D-Wash) said the proposed new credit levels "are needed to help meet the credit requirements of many farmers who cannot get adequate loans elsewhere, and to provide vital facilities including water and sewer systems in thousands of small towns."
The legislation, which is expected to have only token opposition on its
way to final passage, authorizes and guarantees loans totaling up to $5.815 billion annually compared with $3.933 billion in the current fiscal year.
The loan guarantees in this legislation do not include, or affect in anyway, monies earmarked for disaster farm loan programs.

New Method
(Continued From Page 1)
The Commissioner said that although station owners and operators will be permitted to show the half-price indications on the pumps themselves, they will be required to continue to advertise their gasoline by the full gallon price in all other locations.
Officials in charge of the Agriculture Department's Fuel Oil Division point out that there are now more than 44,000 gasoline pumps in operation in Georgia with only a "small number at present equipped to display and calibrate prices in excess of a dollar per gallon.
Although Agriculture Department officials were quick and firm to point out that the state organization has no input into the pricing of gasoline, most agree that the dollar per gallon mark probably will be widespread in Georgia by Labor Day.

USE PAPER BAG
Use a heavy-duty paper bag to flour chicken or fish for frying. Just put your seasonings (a cup of flour, a tablespoon of salt and pepper to taste) in the bag; then toss in the meat and shake the bag. Does a beautiful job of coating the food. Some folks add a cup of finely-ground corn meal when they fr*y*fi*sh*.
TRYKABOBS
Sometimes precooking is necessary to make all kabob foods get done at the same time. And that is important. Extension Service home economists say you should use your imagination when you try kabobs. Besides meat, consider mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes you name it. Food on a stick looks festive, is fun to fix, and delicious to eat.

Farm Loans
(Continued From Page 1)
Several members of the House committee noted that the new ceiling levels for farmers would allow credit to expand at about the same rate as commercial lending in recent years.
The legislation covers a three year period with lending levels in each of the 1980, 1981 and 1982 fiscal years being set in separate actions by Congress as part of annual appropriations bills.
The current, three-year appropriations, would serve as guarantees for the loans availability with passage through the individual yearly appropriation legislation "a routine matter."

TENNIS ANYONE?
What you wear playing tennis is important, too. Clothing and textile specialists with the Extension Service say you should exercise your creativity in dressing for the game. They recommend practical easy -to -care -for tennis clothes. Choose cool fabrics such as terry, loose knits and crochets. And look for cotton on the label it's comfortable*a*nd* a*bsorbent.
CARPENTER BEES
Those flying insects buzzing around wooden decks and eaves of homes are probably carpenter bees. They are often mistaken for bumble bees. Carpenter bees cause damage by tunnelling into wood to build nests. Extension Service entomologists say an oil-base painted surface usually discourages them. Spray other surfaces with an insecticide (diazinon, propoxur or dichlorvos), always following directions on the label.

Wkat 9 yucca?
It would seem that when reference is made to a "Spanish Bayonet" or an "Adam's Needle" the conversation would likely concern some form of early device of war.
Not so. The conversation would be about plants ... one plant in particular ... more commonly known as the yucca. Also referred to as Bear Grass and Soapweed, much of the gangly stalk can be eaten and is considered quite delicious. Although the plant is commonly associated with the west and southwest, various species are found in most areas of the U.S., and, can easily be grown as a garden variety. According to Billy Joe Tatum's Wild Foods Cookbook, the plant's flower petals, in late spring and summer, and seeds, in late summer and fall, are readily adaptable for table use. The flower petals can be used in salads, fritters, or candied and the seeds cooked as a vegetable. The yucca is a large plant growing in the form of a rosette of stiff, spiky leaves, tightly clustered looking much like a bouquet of narrow or wide swords. The width of the blades vary with the species. The leaves of some plants have small threads trailing from their edges, while others have edges with thornlike teeth. The overall appearance of the plant is cactus-like. The flower portion appears from late spring until fall, producing numerous white or cream-colored bellshaped flowers. Tatum's book suggests that after the flowers drop off, the seed pods should be picked while they are still green, with tender white seeds inside. The seeds turn black when mature. It's at this point that the pods can be split so the seeds can be removed. And, Mrs. Tatum says food isn't all that the yucca can supply. According to her book, the American Indians in the west still gather one species for its threadlike fibers to make useful and decorative objects. There's still more. The root of the plant can be crushed to make soap, and when diluted somewhat, says Mrs. Tatum, it even serves as a "fair" shampoo.

Preserving Can Save Money
If Fruits, Vegetables Handy

Do you really save money by canning, freezing and preserving fruits and
vegetables? Some say yes, some say no. It depends on several variables such as availability of produce, energy, labor and added ingredients.

Using what you have is the key to saving money in food preservation. If your garden overflows, by all means freeze or can it. The costs of canning jars, energy for processing and/or freezing will be nominal later in the year when produce is more expensive.
Even if you don't have several bushels of tomatoes, beans or peaches to "put up" though, there are some things you can preserve without spending much money.
For instance, watermelon rind pickles are a taste treat made from the unused portion of the watermelon.
Sunbelt Preview Slated
July 17th in Moultrle
A special Sunbelt EXPO Field and Press day is scheduled July 17.
In addition to representatives from the media, county agents, growers and the agribusiness sector are invited to this EXPO preview.
It will give those attending an opportunity to examine early summer crops of corn and grain sorghum for assessing growth and yield potential.
It will also provide an early, first hand look at the various demonstrations areas.
And, because the "drain tile field day" was rained out in January that will also be included in the July activities.
It will be at the EXPO site at Spence Field in Moultrie.
Sunbelt itself, say officials, is growing bigger every day and should be of mammoth proportion by the October 9th opening.
Shipping Grain
(Continued From Page 1)
Continental handled some 6,664,000 bushels of soybeans. Ninety-three percent were Georgia grown. The beans were brought into the port during a period from October 1978 through March of '79.
Destinations for the Georgia cargo included Norway, Mexico, Spain, Denmark and Israel, with the major portion going to England and Taiwan.
Ports officials say the quantities met predictions for this year's crop. And, provided another good crop prevails, the port expects to handle 10 to 12,000,000 bushels of Georgia beans for the 1979-80 season.
The ten, 12-thousand ton silos which are making these "local exports" possible were a $4.3 million expansion ... a part of an overall $52-million improvement project by the Ports Authority.
There have been predictions that grain price income should increase 10 to 25 cents a bushel for south Georgia farmers because of the closer shipping point, effecting a cutback in overall transportation cost.

Yield: 8 cups.
A PRIZE WINNING COOK -- Being the winner of such a contest is not that unusual .... unless you happen to be 12-years old competing against adult men and women. That makes it unique. Angela King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy King of Hartwell, walked away with top honors recently in the Georgia Farm Bureau's annual recipe contest. Angela's congratulated by Farm Bureau Women's Committee Chair person Ms. Cookie McMullan and Bureau President Bob Nash. The contest is co-sponsored by the Bureau's Women's Committee and the dairy farmers of Georgia. Angela's whining entry of "Heaven ly Coconut Concoction" is featured on page 5.
Trade Fair Provides
Agricultural Stage
The Trade Fair of the Americas project, which attracts much interest in Georgia, will be held in Miami from July 21 through the 28th.
During last year's fair 15 foreign governments and 466 private manufacturing firms participated in the event. Transactions completed during the '78 fair topped some $57 million.
This year's trade show, contend officials, offers U. S. manufacturers, particularly those in the agricultural field, an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their goods in a "high demand" environment, considering Latin American's avid interest in modern agricultural technology.
