Tobacco Season Long Growing Season Enhances

Rodeo Fever
Comes to Ga.
High School Rodeo is here. This means high school students can add roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling and bull riding to their extracurricular activities.
Georgia was recently accepted as the 32nd member of the National High School Rodeo Association, making the students in the state eligible to not only compete for state honors but also for national honors in America's original sport. This is the only sport in which a high school student can compete individually for a national championship.
The National High School Rodeo Assn. was formed in 1949 with five states as charter members. It now includes 33 states, including two Canadian provinces. It is a non-profit, non-political youth organization of voluntary membership designed to develop leadership, sportsmanship, citizenship and human relations.
(Our guest columnist this week is Alfred
Trapp, State Student President, Georgia High
School Rodeo Association, Armuchee 30105.)
The high school association requires its members to meet their state's athletic association standards. The NHSRA is the largest horse oriented youth organization in the United States with the exception of 4-H. The membership now exceeds 14,000.
Each member state of the national organization holds its own state finals rodeo and the top four contestants in each event qualify for the nation finals representing their state. The 1979 National Finals will be held in Fargo, North Dakota and the 1980, in Yakima, Washington.
Based on the number of contestants, National High School Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the world. In the last four years, the number of contestants has jumped from 732 to over 1300 last year. The cowboys and cowgirls compete in a rodeo that runs seven days and includes 13 performances.
Boys compete in bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping and cow cutting. Girls compete in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, break-away roping, cow cutting and queen contest.

Opens Mid-Ju|v Vegetable Gardening Popularity

Georgia's tobacco markets will

open Wednesday July 18th. Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin set the opening date after recommenda-

Not since the World War II Victory Garden era has there been such wideranging interest in home planting.

tions from the Georgia Tobacco Advisory Committee.
The Wednesday opening will provide two selling days during the initial week, taking into consideration that markets normally operate only Monday through Thursday.
Commissioner Irvin during his announcement said Georgia will again have a full 18 sets of buyers this year despite earlier speculation that the number might be reduced.
The advisory committee reports the 1979 tobacco crop in "generally good condition". However, they did point to slight damage in some areas because of excessive rain in early

og consumer line...
When I buy chicken and meat in the grocery store, why do I have to pay for all that styrofoam and tissue in the packs? The cost is high enough without adding paper to it.
P.P. Columbus No need to worry. The packaging or "tear" weight is computed before the food is wrapped and the scales are adjusted to account for this weight. You are paying for the poultry or beef only, not the container or wrapping.

Those with their hands in the soil now for the most-part are involved in another war effort ... the war against inflation.
There are no specific figures available as to an exact dollar saving factor in food cost if you "plow your own," but some estimates, depending on garden and family size, run well past the thousand dollar mark annually for an average family of home gardeners.
One strong indication of the vital interest being demonstrated now in gardening is the up-surge in vege-

May. Most experts predict another
"exceptional year" for Georgia tobacco after an all time record sales for the state's crop last year of more than $172 million. Total sales in Georgia for 1978, including some Alabama and Florida tobacco topped the $179 million mark.

Investment Corporation. More than a dozen local and state organizations, including the Georgia Department of Agriculture, co-sponsored the session.
Emphasis of the meeting was on specially-tailored programs to help agribusiness and farm cooperatives take advantage of the growing opportunities in international markets as part of an overall drive to improve the U.S. balance of trade.
Virtually all aspects of exporting, as well as investing in such projects as feed mills and bulk handling facilities, which generate agricultural exports, were discussed.
The session was of particular interest to Georgians because of the push throughout the state to incre-

Anyone interested in the Agricul-
tural Commodity Commissions should plan to attend one of two hearings scheduled by the Georgia House Agriculture Committee. Appointment and selection of Commodity Commission members, ex-officio members and other matters of interest to the ACC will be discussed.
The first hearing is scheduled for July 5 at the Rural Development Center in Tifton at 10 AM. The next hearing will be August 8 at the Department of Agriculture in Atlanta.
If you want to make a statement at the hearings, limit your comments to five minutes. Copies of your statement must be available for members of the House Agriculture Committee.

Pokeweed is only one of many names for this delicious wild plant. It is also referred to as Poke Salad, Poke, Pokeberry, Scoke, Garget and Pigeonberry.
It can be found in a wide variety of locations . . . around farm buildings, along railroads and roadsides as well as on the edge of pastures and gardens and in open fields and wooded areas.
It is a mild plant, considered by many more delicious than most garden vegetables. However, any discussion of the Pokeweed must be accompanied by a warning about the preparation of the plant for eating.
Parts of the plant are not only edible but choice. But, other portions
the roots, berries and the fully mature leaves after the flower has formed should be avoided. They can cause extreme illness if consumed.
The edible portions of the plant include the stalk (after peeling), the young shoots when they are 6 to 8 inches high, and the leaves gathered before formation of the flower. All of this is delicious and completely safe.
The preliminary preparation of the stalks is simple just peel off the thick, purplish outer skin, and it is ready to use in any of the many recipes that call for poke stalks.
The shoots and leaves are ready to use by simply washing and trimming. However, like the stalks, they may be parboiled before use.
The Pokeweed is a spring and summer variety and can be found south of a line running from Maine across Quebec and Ontario to Minnesota, to a southern boundry from Florida west to Arizona and into Mexico.

Gardening
(Continued From Page 1)
Officials with the Georgia Agriculture Department support this, noting that the number of "quality" tests being conducted on seed and related materials has also increased.
Freshness and many times higher quality are side benefits from growing your own. Produce harvested at peak maturity from the garden generally has better flavor and higher nutritional value than that harvested and shipped long distances to the supermarket.
The initial planting season in Georgia begins in late February in the southern portion of the state and lasts through the middle of May. However, experts are quick to advise that there are varieties which can be planted now, or even well into the summer, and mature into excellent crops.
Gardens can take virtually any form from expansive acreage to small, window-box types. Any size and shape can produce good nutritional food if proper care is exercised in the growing process.
A garden can be an individual project or a family affair, and it can be healthful in many respects sunshine, and exercise as well as good food.

Foreign Trade
(Continued From Page 1)
ase foreign market trade. Even though the state's export
dollar has risen some 250 percent since 1972 (from $173-million in '72 to $483-million in 1978) it is the opinion of most officials that interest should be stimulated further in such lucrative markets for Georgia farm products.
The Atlanta session was part of a nationwide effort to acquaint the overall business community with federal incentive programs available to help the U. S. private sector improve its competitive position overseas.
Grandpa's Garden
It seems that many of our readers have devised their own way to control snakes. Although the method is not approved, it is effective according to the response we have received. Martha Parker, Tennille, wrote and said her cousin told her to distribute sulphur around the yard and especially in the places a snake would hide.
"I have done so for ten years and only one or two snakes have I seen in this huge yard during all that time," according to Ms. Parker.
