Co-Op Exports
Top Challenge
With agriculture's value to the world certain to soar in the coming decade, farm cooperatives face some major challenges to protect the economic interests of farmers. Probably our number one challenge is to build a highly effective cooperative export system.
Today, Georgia farmers, through cooperatives, export to almost every
I continent in the world. We ship soybean meal and j oil, peanut meal and oil, edible and seed peanuts, pecans, frozen poul, try, eggs and grains. But, we need to expand our foreign trade. It is difficult, if not impossible, to imagine how farmers would fare today without export markets. During
(Our guest columnist this week is William W. Gaston, President - Chairman, Executive Committee, Gold Kist, Inc., 244 Perimeter Center Parkway N.E., P.O. Box 2210, Atlanta 30301)._______________
the past three years, foreign buyers have taken about 56 percent of our U.S. wheat, 51 percent of U.S. soybeans and 29 percent of the corn produced by farmers in this section.
What is the value of these exports? - 4.9 billion dollars in soybeans, 3.8 billion in corn and 3.1 billion in wheat. If the payment for all U.S. Agricultural exports combined was put into one check, the amount would be about $27 billion in 1978.
Without our foreign markets, farmers over the U.S. could reduce wheat and soybean acreage by about 60 percent and still produce enough for our needs. They could cut corn planting by 40 percent and still saturate the domestic market.
Prices would plummet without large export markets, unless the government imposed production controls.
As food takes on new horizons, agriculture has moved from the back pages of our newspapers to the front page. Certainly, our biggest challenge is to help farmers market their products at the best prices possible. By increasing foreign trade, we can do this and protect the economic interests of farmers.

"Peaches in the Park" Chicken Cooking Contest
Comes to Atlanta Mkt. Won by Savannah Man
The Atlanta State Farmers' Market is sponsoring a series of Festival Days beginning with "Peaches in the Park" on June 16 from noon to 7 PM. Highlights of the market festival include an authentic 1900 era park with hot air balloon rides, free rides on the "Fresh Express" tram, entertainment, free Georgia peaches, and free peach ice cream.
A drawing will also be held for free gifts and prizes. In coordination with "Peaches in the Park", the Atlanta Produce Dealers are sponsoring an outdoor chicken barbecue from noon until closing. Tickets for the barbeque are $2.50 per plate.
A Savannah man who said he first learned about Georgia's annual Chicken Cooking contest from information in the "Market Bulletin" went on recently to win the competition.
Robert English took top honors with Bob's Orange Glazed Chicken
at the cookoff June 5 in Gainesville. Among the prizes he received is a

trip to the national competition in Charleston, South Carolina, later this year. A win there captures a $10,000 prize.
Georgia had a national winner in 1977 ... Mrs. Michael Costa of Atlanta.
The national competition will

Experts Say State Peanut Crop
Could Be Headed for Record
Georgia's peanut crop appears to be off to an excellent start this year ...
and, if the weather continues favorable the state could easily be in for a
"record yield." These have been comments among experts during the early
season.
Georgia Peanut Commission Coor-
dinator, Tyron Spearman says,
"good stands are reported across
the belt, with planting well ahead of
the last two years."
The 1977 drought prevented many
farmers from following the April to
early May planting then, and last
year, excessive rains during most of
April forced almost 40 percent of the
crop to be planted in late May and
June.
However, even with the heavy
rains last year during key periods
some 1.7 billion pounds of peanuts
were produced tipping the scales at
more than $364-million.
Thus far this year, weather pat-
terns have been favorable with corn
crops planted at their usual time
enabling farmers to concentrate on
peanuts ... the state's leading row
crop.
There has been one "gray cloud"
in the otherwise bright outlook con-
cerning the goober.

Gold Kist Joins
Toepfer Company
Gold Kist and other major U.S. and European farm cooperatives have joined with Alfred Toepfer, one of the world's leading commodity trading companies.
An agreement in principle has been reached where the cooperatives will acquire 50 percent interest in the Toepfer organization, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. The joint venture will put Gold Kist in a position to become more active in worldwide merchandising of grain, oil-seed products and feed materials. It will give members access to worldwide marketing information never before available.

Wh.t 9 lettuce?
Lettuce grows in a wild form throughout most of this country. It is referred to as 'prickly lettuce' and grows from two to five feet. The leaves twist and turn edgewise to the sun which has caused it to be also known as 'compass plant'.
Cultivated lettuce dates back more than 2500 years. There are records of its use at the tables of Persian kings about 550 BC. The Romans were very fond of lettuce; the British mention its use in the early 1300's; and it is advertised in seed catalogs in the 1800's listing 13 different varieties.
Lettuce is a cool season crop. In Georgia it must be planted from January through early March for spring use; in the fall, seed should be planted from September through early October.
Chicken Contest
(Continued From Page 1) move to Atlanta next year when some 50 state finalists bring their poultry recipes to Georgia.
The nationwide contest is sponsored by the National Broiler Council. The state competition is coordinated by the Georgia Poultry federation, the Georgia Poultry Processors Association, and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
THE MARKET BULLETIN
og consumer line...
Can you identify these insects for me? They have been flying all over the house.
R.T. Jackson It's going to take more than a swatter to clear the air, you have termites. The best suggestion we can offer is to contact local exterminators for esti mates and choose the one that will be best for your situation. ****
E. M., Woodberry: Please call for more information on roadside stands violating rights of
way.
Can you recommend a spray for snakes? W. S. Atlanta
No chemical poisons or repellents are registered for snake control. The best method is to make the area unattractive to the reptiles by clearing out weedy places, piles of debris and d*ec*ay*in*g outbuildings.
I have read a lot recently about properly storing milk in your home. Is this practice followed in the stores?
J.T. Athens Yes, temperature checks are made on storage facilities for milk and other perishable foods in grocery stores. Additional tests are made along the processing and delivery line before*th*e*p*roduct reaches the store.
I bought some candy that was supposed to have 100 packets in the bag, but there were only 76 in one and 74 in another. When I took it back to the store, the manager gave me a "heavy" bag with 123 pieces in it.
E.W. Albany The store manager contacted the company and had his supply replaced. Apparently there was a malfunction in the counting equipment, which has now been corrected. Thanks for writing us about the problem.
In a previous issue a reader asked for a description of a pest making webbs in his fruit trees. We responded that it was probably webb worms. It has, however, been called to our attention that webb worms are active later in the year. Eastern tent caterpillars are abundant in the spring and were most likely the insect roosting in the man's tree.
All the contestants took tune-out to pose with some of the contest offi cials. [1-r] Rosa Folsome, Hugh Poole, Ralph White, Georgia Agri culture Department, Robert English, Sandra Tint, Barbara Schroeder, Peggy Owens, Georgia Poultry Fed eration and Abit Massey, Federa tion Executive Director.
Ms. Sandra Tint of Augusta was first runner-up in the Georgia contest with other finalists including Ms. Rosa Folsom, Valdosta, Hugh Poole, Conyers, and Ms. Barbara Schroeder of Macon.
Judges for this year's cookoff were Ms. Carol Coffer with the Georgia Natural Gas Company, Ms. Gloria Tolbert representing the Walton EMC, and Ms. Linda Wall from the University of Georgia.
Mr. English says his dish is relatively easy to prepare. His recipe is featured on page five.
Peanut Crop
(Continued From Page 1)
says there has been more seed rot noted in the fields this year because of stress during last fall's drought coupled with cool spring nights that followed planting.
However, he was quick to point out that despite the seed problem, which was foreseen last fall, crop stands are off to "their best beginn. ing in the last three years."

Grandpa's Garden
Mini Markets Planned
An inexpensive treatment for fleas and ticks is Sevin Dust. A five, seven or eight percent dust is recommended with up to ten percent safe for most animals. Sevin dust is the main ingredient in commercial flea powder.
Mrs. Allene Carpenter, Gwinnett County, says, "When my garden adjoining a 15-acre "forest" began to sprout, I decided I'd have to curb the little early dawn visitors, at least until the garden became big enough to share with ol' mother bunny rabbit and her four bright-eyed, longeared little cottontails. I set my small transistor (battery) radio, in a plastic bag, between the rows with the volume low but audible to sharp little ears, and let it run all night. It worked, completely! When things aitr."e up in abundance, I will remove
Also, rabbits in particular will not come into the garden at all if a little white flour is sprinkled around, as they will not touch anything with "white" on it, according to Mrs. Carpenter.
By Church Groups
A food fair project is underway among several churches in Fulton, DeKalb and Carroll counties. The churches plan to turn their parking lots into mini-farmers markets to offer local residents and small gardeners and farmers an opportunity to buy and sell produce.
Officials of the project say the mini-markets will be open to all farmers and gardeners except truck salesmen. There will be no charge for space with sellers setting their own prices.
The schedule will allow each church participating to have the food fair on its lot one day a week. The project gets underway Saturday June 23 at the Druid Hills Presbyterian Church.
Interested farmers should contact Jack Beckford in Atlanta at (404) 284-5300 for additional information.
Future food fair dates will be announced.
