Worm Farming,
A Grubby Story
During the last few years thousands of Georgians have entered the worm business. A few started on their own. Many entered contract agreements with worm companies that sold franchises with buy back promises.
Worm sales promotions hinted at hidden markets for worms.
Worms were advertised as sources of protein, as decomposers of sewage, for foreign markets and other uses. Now the bubble has burst. The worm franchising companies have left. Franchisers did well during their short stay in Georgia. Of 25 franchisees interviewed a few months

ago, none had made money. Their average payment to the worm company was about $2300. Sales of worms back to the company averaged about $68.
Only a few of the franchisees interviewed had asked their county extension agent's advice prior to investing. Those who did, failed to heed the advice.
Small growers are now finding that fish bait is the main market for their worms. If growers live near concentrations of fishermen, they can sell bait directly to the consumer. Often it is more convenient to sell to an established bait shop.
Some worm growers sell to bait dealers who have a regular bait route of 50 or more bait shops. If there is a shortage of worms in an area it may be possible to start one's own bait route. This strategy is usually impractical for worm growers with other employment.
Mail order sales of worms are possible if growers advertise in fishing magazines and other periodicals. Proper packing and prompt shipping of orders are essential to developing repeat mail order customers.
Selling worms in bulk is much easier than putting worms in cups,

Gasoline
Sweet Georgia Onions,
Farmers Must ue to Arrive Any Day
Verify Needs
Farmers who have not already verified their fuel oil needs with their supplier should do so immediately. Failure to do so may result in fuel shortages later in the farming season.
Gasoline needs for agricultural purposes are protected. However, to take advantage of this farm allocation protection, farmers must verify their needs with their supplier. Notify your supplier in writing approximately 30 days prior to needing fuel to assure its availability.
If you have difficulty obtaining needed fuel after taking these precautions, you should contact the State Energy Office at 656-5176 for assistance.
Beekeepers Short Course
The annual beekeepers short course for beginners and more experienced beekeepers will be held June 9 at the University of Georgia in Athens. Course fee is $15 per person and advance registration is required by June 7.
Topics and demonstrations will include honey bee biology and behavior, bee diseases, management for honey production, including comb honey, honey house operation, queen rearing and package bee installation.
Write Dr. Alfred Dietz, Department in Entomology, U. of Ga., Athens 30602 or call 404/542-2816, 542-8711 for additional information and registration forms.
Wagon Train
The 'gold' wagon train is scheduled to leave Jekyll Island May 12. The train will wind its way up the Georgia coast, through eastern and middle Georgia with a scheduled arrival in Dahlonega on June 14.
The purpose of the wagon train is to raise money to regild Georgia's gold dome. Anyone interested in participating in the train, either for the complete five weeks, or any portion thereof, is invited to join in.
If you have questions regarding
The arrival of Georgia's sweet onions has become one of the most eagerly anticipated aspects of spring. The south Georgia delicacies will be on the market from mid-May through June.

Miss Georgia Sweet Onion for 1979 is Amy Holton. She will reign over the GlennvUle Onion Festival planned for May 11, 12. Mr. W. F. Durrence, President of the Glennville Bank and Trust is pictured with Miss Holton.
Do You Have
Unlike most onions, Georgia sweet onions are not dried before shipping. They are aired in the fields for several days then bagged while still green in 25 and 50 pound sacks for shipping.
Georgia sweet onions decay more rapidly than most varieties because they have a high moisture content. With proper handling, though, you can store the onions for extended use.
For long term storage, spread onions individually on a shelf in a dry, well-ventilated location. One of the most popular ways to store sweet Georgia onions is in pantyhose. Put in an onion, tie a knot, put in another onion, knot and so forth. Hang the pantyhose and cut off onions as needed.

Your License?
New plastic licenses for both private and commercial pesticide applicators have been recently issued by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. However, quite a number have been returned by the Post Office due to incomplete or incorrect addresses. Dealers are being advised not to honor the old paper license after June 1. If you have not received your new plastic license you should call (404) 656-4958 at once.

Last week in the store the butcher refused to let me see the scales where my meat was being weighed.
R.J. E. Savannah The law requires that consumers have access to scales used to weigh purchases. We have sent an inspector to talk with the store manager.

What size are jumbo eggs? I don't think they are as large as they should be.
H. C. Conyers The important factor in determining the class of eggs is the weight, not the dimensions. One dozen jumbo eggs can not weigh less than 30 ounces.
Driving north on the interstate
last weekend, I saw economy gas
advertised at a low price. When we
stopped at the station, there was a
higher price on the regular gas and
two pumps labeled economy at the
advertised price. What is economy

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Wednesday, May 9,1979
Wkat 9 Sqwwk?
Squash is a gourd fruit. The Indians called it 'askutasquash' meaning green thing, eaten green. Records show that squash was grown in Peru
over 2,000 years ago. Squash needs full sun and well
drained fertile soil. A little lime, especially if none has been added to the soil in the last three years, will
help production. It is safe to plant squash now in all
parts of Georgia. Plant three to four seeds per hill with hills about 18 inches apart. Cover with one or two inches of soil and thin hills to one plant after seeds have sprouted.
To insure continued production, be sure squash are watered once or twice a week to keep the soil from drying out. Pick summer squash when about 1 1 12 to 2 inches in diameter. Harvest zucchini when it is 8
to 10 inches long.
Worm Farming
(Continued From Page 1) although the price is lower. It is most efficient to sort worms from well stocked beds. If worms are sparse, it may be uneconomical to harvest them as the following example illustrates.
Two men each worked eight hours to sort 185 bait cups of worms to be sold to a dealer at 50 cents per cup. After deducting the price of the paper cups, peat moss for packing and delivery expenses, they found they got paid less than $4.00 per hour for their work. They could have worked overtime at their regular jobs and received more money for their labor. At such a rate it will be impossible for them to ever recover their original investment to the franchiser who set them up.
The price of red worms for bait has not changed much in the last two years.
The best time to sell worms is when fishing is popular. Now is a good time. If you find a good chance to sell worms, take advantage of it. Holding worms until the price rises is often expensive. If the market does improve production can always be increased later.
09 consumer line...
(Continued From Page 1) Economy gas must meet the same
standards as regular fuel unless it is referred to as economy unleaded. Then, it has the same requirements as unleaded. You mentioned that only two of the signs referred to the fuel as regular, the others simply said gasoline. There would have been no violation if the word regular was removed.
Readers in the metro Atlanta area are asked to use the local number when calling Ag Consumer line, 656-3645.

Farmers Urged
To Complete
Census Forms
The Census Bureau already has begun processing report forms of the 1978 Census of Agriculture. Georgia farmers who have not yet sent in their reports should do so promptly.
Farmer organizations, farm cooperatives, and many other users of agriculture census data are waiting for the new census statistics. This information is used by growers, packers, shippers and buyers in the open competitive market system that has made American agriculture, the envy of the world.
The information furnished on farm census reports is strictly confidential. Data from individual farms are lumped together to provide totals so that individual farms cannot be identified. The report form cannot be used against the farmer for tax purposes or other reasons.
