Pork Promotion
In every hog operation there are two people, a pork producer and a porkette. They share equally in the fruits of the business and they are equally concerned that the business produces a profit.
Porkettes, the women's auxiliary of the National Pork Producers,
I are organized on the national, state and local i level. Their pri! mary goals are pork education, promotion and production research.
The Georgia Porkettes have I been in existence since December, 1978. Nationally, Porkettes were organized in

1963 and now have a membership of over 12,000 in 32 states.
Hie National Porkettes, in cooperation with the National Pork Producers Council and its member states, have conducted educational/promotional campaigns to improve the images of pork to consumers, high school home economics departments and medical doctors throughout the nation. They have also worked closely with the Weight Watcher group.
The Georgia Porkettes believe in what we are doing. We know pork producers produce an excellent product. It's very nutritious, great for dieters, and provides a good change of pace for menus. Also, pork is one of today's best food buys.
Americans have been eating pork since DeSoto brought pigs to this continent in the 16th century. However, pork that consumers buy today is a far cry from what earlier settlers cooked.
Today's pig has 60 percent less fat; goes to market 30 days quicker and turns three pounds or less of grain into one pound of meat.
All of this is a result of the modern pork producer's use of better genetics and feeding programs.
Wives of pork producers, or ladies from related fields, are invited to join our newly organized group. For further information, please contact: Janice Driggers, Treasurer, Route 1, Manassas, Ga. 30438.

9 Oftta? Georgia's Peach Crop
Looks Good for 1979 Okra is considered a truly southern
vegetable. It is native to Africa and is
closely related to cotton. One look at the beautiful creamy yellow blooms will also verify its claim to kinship with
Prospects for the 1979 peach crop look extremely good, according to the Georgia Peach Commission and growers throughout Georgia. The first shipments of Georgia peaches will be made from Brooks County the week of

Growers throughout the peach production areas say that, barring
from the tropical African area which includes Ethiopia. It is referred to as growing in Egypt around the early 1200's.
From here okra was taken by traders and slaves to Europe and consequently to the New World, specifically the West Indies. By the 1700's okra was a staple in Louisiana.
Okra is a popular vegetable for Georgia gardens. Planting must wait until the ground is warm. Mid-March in South Georgia and mid-April in the northern part of the state is usually a good guideline. Seeds should be planted one inch apart and later thinned to one plant per foot of row.
Harvest okra pods when they are three to four inches long. Longer pods lose their tenderness quickly. Pick pods at least three times a week. Okra plants will stop producing if you
What to do with wastewater sludge from poultry processing plants is fiie feature topic of a one-day seminar being held May 10 by Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station. The free seminar is at the Gainesville Holiday Inn, and lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Anyone interested in wastewater treatment and poultry by-product rendering is encouraged to attend the seminar which is being sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Poultry Federation and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
The purpose of the seminar is to familiarize poultry processors and Tenderers with the problems of waste treatment handling and disposal, and to discuss solutions to these problems.
Anyone interested in attending the seminar should contact George Battaglia at Georgia Tech, (404) 894-
unforseen problems, the 1979 crop should be a full one with no shortages in any varieties. Many growers report the cleanest crop they have seen in a number of years.
The Georgia Peach Commission offers the following tips on buying peaches:
Look for a well-defined crease in all varieties.
Red is not always a sign of ripeness. The amount of blush (the red color) depends on the variety. Creamy to gold undercolor indicates the ripeness of the peach.
If fresh Georgia peaches are to be eaten immediately, select fruit that has begun to soften.
Don't squeeze the peach to check firmness. They bruise easily and decay will develop rapidly.
If you are wondering how much to buy, remember that one pound of peaches equals:
3 medium peaches, or 2 cups sliced peaches, or 1 cup pulp or puree

I am concerned about the levels of boron in the fertilizer I've been buying.

Close checks are kept on fertilizers sold in Georgia for contents and
weight. Boron additions require a red caution tag if the content is guaran-
teed at or above 0.06 per cent. Penalties are assessed for failure to comply
with the law.

Is some sort of dye used on new potatoes? When I boiled potatoes, the water turned red.
L.P. Cartersville Yes, it is Red Dye No. 40 and is USDA approved. The information tag or label information on the bag should indicate use of the dye. The practice began years ago when people thought*n*ew* p* otatoes should be red.
Army worms are making webbs in all my fruit trees. Is there anything I
can do to stop them?
B.W.
Griffin
From your description of "black, caterpillar-like" insects which spin
webbs, it sounds like you have webb worms. You can spray with sevin dust
if the insects are out of the nests. However, the dust will not penetrate the
webb and it may be necessary to use the liquid form. PLEASE FOLLOW LA-
BEL DIRECTIONS.

Treated Posts
Insure Long Use
Pressure treated wood means just that! Powerful, long-lasting preservatives are driven deep into the wood in pressurized cylinders. After treatment, sufficient pressure treated wood to construct a 500 square foot deck (20' x 25'} will contain ten times the preservative found hi a similar quantity of wood that has been dipped, and nearly forty times as much protective preservative as would be present if the preservative had been brushed on.
Treatment by brushing protects only the surface. Dipping allows penetration to only 1/32 of an inch.
Long-lasting protection is provided when the preservative is deep in the wood. Pressure treating puts the right amount of protection where it is needed.

A small grain field day will be held May 16 at the Georgia Experiment Station, Bledsoe Farm, Pike County. Emphasis will be on small grain produc tion and its use in double-cr opping and no-tillage systems.
The event is a joint effort of the University of Georgia Ag ricultural Experiment Station, Georgia Station and the Coop erative Extension Service. The Bledsoe farm is on High way 362 (Williamson Road), approximately 12 miles west of Griffin.

held for a few days. To ripen further, place fruit on the kit chen counter for a day or two.
Never buy green or shriv eled peaches since they will not ripen.
When buying peaches, know what you are getting. They are customarily classifi ed as freestone or clingstone. A freestone peach is just what the name implies. The fruit parts readily from the stone or pit. The clingstone is a more solid fruit and is more difficult to separate from the pit. Clingstone peaches are used primarily for commerci al canning.
There are at least 50 to 61 varieties of peaches produced commercially in Georgia and harvest usually continues un til mid-August.
