Trees Meet
Many Needs
Forests and woodlands play a very important role in our lives. Land covered in trees is land protected against soil erosion from wind and water. This land is, in a sense, well-preserved for other activities like crop production while at the same time providing a source of income for landowners.
Recognizing this, Georgia's Soil and Water Conservation Committee
and Districts are taking part in a statewide effort to enroll hundreds more landowners in the "American Tree Farm System".
Through the American Tree Farm System, owners of forest lands are nominated for an assessment of the

management system in effect on their lands. When all criteria are met, the land is designated a "Certified Tree Farm" and listed with the national system. Guidance in managing the tree farm is provided by private and government foresters.
For the Committee and Districts, this becomes another of many new directions demanded by modern soil and water conservation. They have had to deal with new mandates in non-point pollution control and provide state leadership in erosion and sediment control.
Land use, loss of prime farm lands and the adaptation of conservation practices to new agricultural production methods are now matters of serious concern to a soil and water conservation program. The Committee has recently added responsibility for inventorying and categorizing dams around the state under the Georgia Safe Dams Program.
Underlying all the new challenges lies the vital ongoing program of providing technical assistance in conservation to tens of thousands of landowners on millions of acres.
Among the practices offered by the Districts are several dealing

I have been buying bread for a number of years and thought I was saving by buying the longer giant loaves. However, last week I checked the weight

against the king size and noticed that the weight was the same. B. T.

Atlanta

The difference is in the thickness of the slices and the giant size does

appear to be longer. Because the loaf is referred to as large or giant rather

than the weight being called king size, the practice is permissible. When

comparing products, check the weights as this information should be clearly

visible on all labels.

****

The hog supplement I have been buying makes some claims that sound

impossible. Can you check out the facts for me? R.W.

Columbus

We checked with the company and a mistake was made in calculating the

proportions. New labels are being printed and we certainly are glad that

you were concerned enough to brin*g *th*e *matter to our attention.

I purchased some flower seeds in regular and pellet form. The regular ones are sprouting beautifully, but the pellet seeds aren't doing anything.

R.S.

Decatur

Seeds encased in pellets do take longer to germinate as the covering must

dissolve. According to our records, tests were run on the seed in question in

February and you should have a lov*el*y*flo* wer bed in the near future.

In buying baby food, how can I tell which products have the most meat? E.G.
Savannah

Knowing the established standards for meat products can be very useful in planning a menu. The percentages for baby food based on the fresh un-

cooked weight are as follows: high meat dinner, at least 26 per cent meat;

meat and broth, at least 61 per cent meat; vegetable and meat, at least eight

per cent meat.

We are having some problems with flies and mosquitos in my area. Is there anything that can be done?
R. G. Waycross

Control of bisects that could be considered hazardous to human health are administered by local health departments. You should check with these sources to see what help they can offer.

Stop Sale on
Tons of Fertilizer
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has placed a stop sale order on the largest single shipment of fertilizer in its history. The shipment totaled almost one half million pounds.
Last week, Department of Agriculture inspectors discovered 100 pound bag fertilizer shortweighted an average of three to five pounds per bag. The fertilizer was labeled Champion Brand 16 percent Nitrate of Soda.
Most of the fertilizer was being warehoused in Cordele with deliveries to retail outlets from there. Additional bags were withheld from sale in Blackshear, Waycross and Augusta.
Since the stop sale went into ef(Continued On Page 8)

Good News Chickens Warmed by Wood Heat

For Canners
The cannery at the Atlanta State Farmers Market will be open this summer. Previously, the Georgia Department of Agriculture had announced that the cannery would be closed due to low revenue last season.
New operating hours are hoped to increase usage of the facility and make it financially feasible to operate in future seasons. The cannery is tentatively set to open June 11. Watch for more information soon.

Proves Less Costly Fuel Works

Wood-heated chicken houses could be the latest thing on the agricultural scene. Wood provides an excellent alternative to the conventional fuels now

used to heat poultry growout houses.

Propane, a non-renewable and sometimes hard-to-get resource, is the predominant fuel presently used to heat buildings for raising chickens. Due to rising fuel costs and the resulting lower profit margins for farmers, the search for an alternate fuel was the subject of a research project at Georgia Tech's Engineer-

ing Experiment Station. This past winter provided the first
cold weather test for a wood-fired furnace that was installed last summer in a growout house in Carrollton. The wood heating system was a success.
Two flocks were heated with

During extremely low temperatures the wood fur nace had to be backed up with propane. However, re searchers think that by add-' ing insulation or caulking to the building, gas won't be necessary even at the really low temperatures.
The success of this experi ment with wood energy is particularly important for Georgia because of the avail-

with woodland management. It is hoped that this new pro gram of emphasis will bring about greater landowner in volvement in protecting this mighty resource.
Planting forests, managing their growth, harvesting wisely and replanting the best reminds us that forests and woodland minimize soil ero sion, maintain water quality and provide homes for many, forms of wildlife.
We must remain aware that forests are an extremely important component - but just one part - of a total system of living things. It must all be treated wisely.

What U Cucuwtet?
Cucumbers are members of the gourd family and have been a staple of man's diet for thousands of years. Indians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans made reference to cucumbers up to 4,000 years ago.
Charlemagne experimented with cucumbers in the 8th century on his French farm. The English did not start growing them until' about the 13th century.
During one of his trips to the Caribbean, Columbus planted cucumber^ in Haiti in the 14th century. From here Spaniards brought them to our country in the early 1600's. Although cucumbers are not native to our country, they have been grown here since the first colonies were established.
Cucumbers are native to southern Asia. The name 'cucumber' comes from the Latin name cucumis.
There are many different types of cucumbers, from three inch long fruits to mammoth two feet long cucumbers. The Russians prefer a brownskinned cucumber; the French lean towards the long white cucumbers which are prized not only for their taste but their cosmetic qualities. It is said that cucumbers whiten and soften the skin.
Growing cucumbers in home gardens requires a few initial steps to insure good production. Cucumbers like a 'sweet soil.' Add a little lime to your garden soil especially if none has been added in the last three years.
Cucumbers are a warm weather crop. They will not tolerate any cold soil and will be wiped out by the first frost.
If you are going to let cucumber vines trail, allow considerable room for them to run. If you are limited on space, cucumbers will grow on a trellis. Sow seed one inch deep, three to five seeds per one foot of row. When plants are up but still small, thin to one plant per foot of row.
Quarantine Areas
The Department of Agriculture has announced its intention to change quarantine areas for sweet potato weevils and tobacco plants. Any interested party may appear at 10 AM, May 23, Room 201 at the Georgia Department of Agriculture to present their views concerning these amendments.
The Cotton Pickin Arts and Craft Fair is planned for May 5 and 6, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Gay. The center of fair activity is around a cotton warehouse, seed cotton storage house, corn hammer mill, cotton gin and other old buildings reminiscent of another era.

Sharpen Shopping Skills

Grocery shopping requires more effort these days. Most people can not afford 'shopping mistakes'. Taking time to familiarize yourself with stand ards, grades, nutrition levels, etc. helps you make the smartest buy for the money.
To help make these important decisions you need to know as much as you can about foods, label information and storage, to name a few. For ex ample, carbohydrates are the main source of quick energy and can be found in cereals, breads, corn, potatoes, stem vegetables, sweets and more.
You should also know how to read a label. Nutrition labeling must follow a standard format listing what you can expect nutritionally from the pro
duct. Familiarize yourself with the basic four food group. Do you know how
many servings of meat, milk, vegetables, fruit and breads your body requir es daily? The basic four food chart is the basis for good nutrition and health.

feet, the 100 pound bags of fertilizer have been relabeled under the De partment's direction. Corrected bag labels should read 96 pounds and prices for the fertilizer should have been proportionately reduced. After the labels were corrected, the 96 pound bags were released from the stop sale order.
Weighing of bagged fertilizer is a routine part of the Department of Agriculture's inspection program. Warehouses and retail outlets are checked regularly to be sure that bagged fertilizer, as well as other commodities, are accurately weigh ed and labeled.
Department inspectors are check ing retail outlets throughout the state for other shipments of Cham pion Brand 16 percent Nitrate of Soda. The shortweighted shipment, however, was detected at the ware house and it is doubtful that the fer tilizer ever reached the consumer.

Mr. H. R. Canterbury, Floyd County, says his tomato plants lost all their blooms until he started add ing epsom salts to the soil. (Epsom salts actually helps relieve a magne sium deficiency).
"Work a handful of salts into the soil around the plant and then water good. You can also put a spoonful of salts in a couple of cups of warm water and spray on some plants like pepper plants."
Next to plastic milk jugs, old coffee cans are one of the most use ful helpers in the garden.
You can start seeds in them (punch holes in the bottom); store seed packets (seal with tape and put the plastic lid back on); watering gauge (put one pound cans out as far as your sprinkler reaches to see how
much water those plants are actual ly getting); and to hold cantaloupes and small watermelons off the ground. Push can into ground about
halfway. Lay the melon gently on top
