Is the tomato a vegetable or fruit? By cultivation and use it is a vegetable; botanically it is a fruit. As a fruit, it is a berry because it is pulpy and has one or more seeds that are not stones.
Tomatoes are the most popular inclusion in home vegetable gardens. And yet, 100 years ago few people in America had ever tasted a tomato.
Tomatoes are not native to our country. Historians say that tomatoes are from the Peru-Bolivia-Ecuador area of the Andes. As they were introduced into the United States they slowly attracted attention as a new vegetable.
But popularity came slowly. Tomatoes were identified as a member of the deadly 'nightshade' family and only brave adventuresome souls would risk eating a tomato.
By the late 1800's tomatoes had overcome the bad publicity and people began to enjoy the fruit/vegetable. Soon tomatoes were part of every garden.
For successful tomato gardening, it is better to have a few well-cared for plants than bunches of straggly untended ones. Tomatoes need sun, well-drained soil and lots of water.
Dig a deep hole when you plant your tomatoes. Mix in compost or rotted sawdust for extra nutrition.
It is safe to plant tomatoes when all danger of frost has passed. Stake tomato plants two to three feet apart and mulch. The mulch will keep the roots cool, conserve moisture and help control weeds.

Historic '79 General Assembly

Passes Several Agriculture Bills

The 1979 regular session of the Georgia General Assembly ended Tuesday, March 27. Several bills and resolutions were passed which affect Georgia farmers and consumers. Following is a brief summary of these bills
awaiting the Governor's signature.

Council Elects
New Officers
The Georgia Agribusiness Council has elected A. B. Carlan, DeSoto, president of their organization for 1979. Mr. Carlan was elected to the post at the annual meeting recently in Atlanta.
Other officers named for 1979 are: Vice Presidents Fred W. Greer, Jr., C&S National Bank, Atlanta and Hugh Craig, Jepeway-Craig Company, Dublin; Treasurer, Preston Collins, Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph, Atlanta; and Secretary John T. Jenkins, Livestock Breeder Journal, Macon.
Four new board members were also elected: W. C. Pulliam, Gold Kist, Inc., Atlanta; Bill Baisley, Peterson Farms, Dalton; Robert L. Nash, President, Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, Macon; and W. Ted Evans, Farm Systems, Inc., Watkinsville.

Senate Bills
Senate Bills No. 135 and 136 strengthen our state's weights and measures laws by making it possible for the Commissioner of Agriculture to hold hearings and punish violators under the State Administrative Procedures Act.
Senate Bill No. 112 amends the State Buying Services Act by requiring buying services, buying clubs or similar business enterprises to be licensed and bonded at each place of business.
Senate Bill No. 166 provides there shall be no implied warranty that cattle, hogs or sheep sold by a licensed auction company or agent are free from disease. (Not applicable to brucellosis reactors detected by state tests.)
Senate Resolution No. 61 urges producers of peanuts, cotton and tobacco to form producer organizations so they might have a more direct hand in nominating officers for the agricultural commodity commissions representing these three farm crops.

Is it legal for gas stations to sell fuel at a price higher than the ceiling

price posted on the tank?

R. F.

Athens

No. Ceiling or maximum lawful selling prices are regulated by the federal

energy office. It is the responsibility of the individual station to compute and

post the maximum ceiling price based on the price of their last delivery.

Violations should be reported to the Economic Regulatory Administration at

1-800-424-9246. The Georgia Department of Agriculture inspects for fuel

quality and properly adjusted equipment, but has no jurisdiction over

prices.

What size are jumbo eggs? I don't think they are as large as they should be.
H. C. Conyers The important factor in determining the class of eggs is the weight, not the dimensions. One dozen jumbo eggs can not\veigh less than 30 ounces. ****

Dear Editor:
In pricing the items we wish to sell in the MARKET BULLETIN, we try to consider the finances of others
and make our price just as low as possible. Recently I advertised a quilt and received two dozen orders for the same quilt. By the time I sent the checks back to the people, I really didn't make any money on the quilt.
If people would just send a stamped addressed envelope when they order it would help so much. We could return their money if the item was sold or send them a note that the item was being mailed.
