In Beekeeping
I The Georgia Beekeepers Association (GBA) is promoting one of the Oldest and most interesting occupations which exists today, ... beekeeping.
The GBA consists of over 400 members throughout Georgia and its primary purpose is three-fold: to promote beekeeping in the state by making the public aware of the importance of the honeybee; to promote products and services of the honeybee industry such as honey, package bees, queens, beeswax, and pollination; and to keep our members iniormed of up-dated methods and products concerning bees.
The importance of honeybees is

recognized by few. Many people have heard the saying that agriculture is the backbone of the nation when, in fact, beekeeping is the backbone of agriculture.
Authorities estimate 85 percent of the pollination task required for certain fruits and seed crops is accomplished by honeybees. The USDA reports that at least 90 agricultural crops are either dependent upon honeybees or yield more abundantly when bees are plentiful. Tests and experiments have proven that yields of fruit and seed are more than doubled when honeybees are used in cross pollination.
Based on information obtained in a recently conducted survey by the GBA, the dollar value of the beekeeping industries in Georgia is conservatively estimated at $10,550,000. The value of bees to agriculture, as estimated by the USDA, is considered to be twenty times the actual dollar value generated through bees. Using these calculations the value of bees to Georgia agriculture alone is over 200 million dollars annually.
The total dollar value to our nation generated by the bee in 1977, as reported by the USDA, was 10 billion dollars. It should be noted that our state is the largest producer of queens and package bees, in the United States and that our bees are supplied annually to other nations

Referendum Vote Food Canning Facilities

May Soon Settle
Assessment Query
A peanut referendum, if approved, will allow Georgia peanut farmers to decide the outcome of a proposed additional $1 per ton Peanut Commodity Commission assessment now being considered by growers.
Information meetings have been planned across the state in the peajiut belt, to inform farmers how the additional funds will be utilized. Meetings will occur Jan. 22 in Blakely, Jan. 23 in Plains and Tifton, Jan. 24 in Statesboro and Jan. 25 in Dublin.
After the information meetings have been completed, a public hearing will be held in Tiftor with representatives of the Attorney General's office to submit a public recommendation for the referendum. If approved, the referendum will be held March 2 through April 1, allowing farmers 30 days to make their decision on the increase.

Located Throughout State

The state of Georgia has over 70 community canning centers which help

make possible the preserving of foods without investing in expensive can-

ning equipment. As inflation and upward spiraling food prices increase,

more and more families are looking for ways such as this to reduce the food

budget and hold down costs.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Wednesday, Januarys, 1979

Dear Editor:
I want to thank you for the letter you printed in your 'letters to the editor' column from Stephen Maness. He has been with me only three months. I was surprised by the letter especially because I had to tell him and his brother there would be no Christmas.
Three people answered the letter. I would like to thank all of those people. They don't know how happy they made me with the seeds and the plants.
Just the other day the boys rabbits got killed. I sure would like to get away from this place. The boys want to live on a farm real bad and I would like to be a caretaker. I believe this would make the boys real happy.
Thank you again and thank all the nice people who read the MARKET BULLETIN.
Mrs. W. Maness 189 Mills Street Atlanta, Georgia 30313

Tanning Hides
(Continued From Page 1)
The hide must now be salted again if necessary. If most of the meat and membrane were removed for the first salting, then another salting after "fleshing down" is unnecessary.
Next comes the pickling or preserving stage. Both sulphuric acid and oxalic acid are relatively easy to come by in drug stores. Sulphuric acid is recommended, but exercise extreme caution in use, because it will cause severe burns.
Mix two ounces of sulphuric acid and one pound of salt to each gallon of water used. The skins need to be completely and freely immersed in the solution.
Room temperature should be maintained from 70 to 80 degrees. Deerskins should be left in the solution for approximately seven days and cowhide will take even longer. Leave the skins in the solution until they turn white completely through and through. This means they are thoroughly pickled and preserved.
After pickling, take the skins out, rinse them in water until all salt, solution, etc., has been removed. Place them in a vat or tub of bicarbonate of soda solution with 1 1/2 cups of bicarbonate of soda per 5 gallons of water. Allow the skin to soak in this for 24 hours and remove and rinse them again.
Let each skin drip almost dry on a rack of some sort. Before they get completely dry, neatsfoot oil must be rubbed into the bare skin or flesh side of the hides. The oil should be diluted with water and warmed on a stove, etc., before use.
After the oil has been thoroughly worked into the skin, let it dry completely. Then the task of softening the leather begins. At this stage, the skin must be pulled, twisted, tugged and needed consistently all over in order to break up the hardened fibers.

tt/kdl 9 Aloe?
The Bible mentions two aloe plants one in the Old Testament and the other in the New. The plant of the Old Testament was commonly called 'Paradise Wood' or 'Shoot of Paradise' and was thought by ancient scholars to be the only tree that descended to man from the Garden of Eden.
All thy garments smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. Psalm 45:8.
The Old Testament lign aloe is actually a tree. Its Latin name Aquilaria agallacha refers to another common name "eaglewood". The tree is native to tropical Asia and is large and spreading. In its inner core, the tree contains a dark-colored substance which has been prized for its fragrance for many centuries.
The succulent aloe, Aloe succotrina, is the plant of the New Testament. Botanists say this is the true aloe which is a strikingly beautiful plant with fleshy leaves.
The gelatinous substance which can be squeezed from the leaves has long been esteemed as a balm or salve for the skin. In the days of the New Testament it was used in preparing the dead for burial.
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight. John 19:39.
The aloe of the New Testament was a large plant which grew freely in the Mediterranean countries. The most well-known aloe today is called aloe vera which is a pot plant but contains the same soothing and healing substance which has been valued for centuries as a skin balm.

Can you tell me when kudzu was introduced in the United States? Also where can I find some farkelberry plants?
B. L. Atlanta According to our sources, kudzu was first introduced in the United States in 1876 at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Farkleberries are related to blueberries. They grow wild in south Georgia, but we are not aware of a retail source. As far as we know, they aren't even sold in the Market Bulletin.
