Produce Dealer
A Unique Link
Produce Dealers Associations have through the years worked with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and other promoters to build, maintain and operate better facilities to market farm produce.
The produce wholesaler and distributor is a vital and unique link
between farmers and consumers. Practically every meal served in American homes, restaurants and institutions is dependent, to some degree, upon these marketing professionals. The wholesaler and distributor is the segment of the produce industry

that enables the farmer to reach the greatest number of available markets and insures that he realizes his fullest profit potential.
Georgia's largest organization of wholesalers and distributors is the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association. The Produce Dealers Association maintains a full time office which is located at the State Farmers Market. Major emphasis is placed on providing unified support to all agricultural interests and to participate in activities at the local, state and national levels.
The Atlanta Produce Dealers Association is also a moving force in civic and educational activities of the community. Specially planned events bring thousands of potential customers to the Atlanta State Farmers' Market each year and the Atlanta Produce Dealers Association takes pride in its participation and joint sponsorship of these events.
The Association is a traditional part of the Annual Watermelon Day celebration at the Atlanta Market, as well as the Paintin' and Pumpkin Art Show. These two events attract almost 100,000 persons and give farmers a wider market potential.
Additionally, a full tuition scholarship is given to Clayton Junior College, by the Association to be presented to the recipient of the

Can used mattresses or boxsprings be sold commercially?
E.A. Douglas Yes, mattresses can be recycled. However, they must be sanitized and tagged to indicate they are secondhand. The name and address of either the seller or the agency responsible for treatment must be included on the tag.
Can you have a moisture barrier sprayed under your house? We have a problem with mildew and wood rot.
J.R. Mineral Bluff According to our entomologists, you cannot spray a moisture barrier. The moisture barrier is created lacing polyethylene sheets over 80 percent of tbe area under ome in the crawl space. You cover the dirt, leaving about inch space between the edge of tbe sheet and tbe wall.

Both Inside Hungry Mouths & Out

Several months ago only a handful of people knew anything about rooster pepper. Now, due to White House notoriety, everybody wants to know what rooster pepper is and where they can buy it.

Rooster pepper came to fame when President Carter sampled a gift of sausage flavored with rooster pepper. 'Rooster pepper sausage' was suddenly the talk of the town and people wanted to know more about the mysterious seasoning ingredient.
After searching our files to no avail, we asked our readers for help. "What is rooster pepper? Where does it grow? What does it taste like?"
According to Mrs. Nellie Cardwell

from LaGrange, rooster pepper is grown as a houseplant. She knew it as rooster comb because "it grows like a rooster's comb".
Mrs. Vera Patterson, Rincon, said it was a hot pepper plant with little peppers which are shaped like rooster's spurs. The colors change from

Eubanks Receives Fine
In Truck Scales Misuse

Rooster pepper 'spurs' are small but a little goes a long way.

A. C. Eubanks, who leases the
service station and truck scales on the Atlanta Farmers Market, has been fined $1,000. Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin imposed the fine as a result of the use of the truck scales by a non-certified public weigher to falsify truck weights. The investigation originated with a
CBS-TV program on alleged corrupt practices between public weighers and regulated public carriers. Five hundred dollars or the $1,000 fine was suspended conditional upon Mr. Eubanks' strict adherence to state weights and measures laws and a one year probationary period as a certified public weigher.

Dear Editor,

There seems to be a lot of confusion on how to spell a

certain breed of cattle. I am referring to the breed "Brah

man." I have seen many different spellings but it is spell

ed as shown above by the American Brahman Breeders

Association so I believe this would be the accepted spell

In the Bible there are many refer ences to lilies but the plant to which the verse in Luke pertains is thought to be the anemone. Consider the lil ies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Luke 12:27.
According to Biblical scholars, Je sus addressed the crowd and gave this message near the plain of Gennesaret. This district of Palestine was particularly noted for its brilliant flow ers - the most outstanding being the anemone, often called the windflower.
Anemones can be planted in early spring or fall. The seed should be sown in rich, well-drained soil with partial shade. The plant will grow about six inches tall.
Anemones are native to southern Europe and will do well in our Georgia climate.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Rooster Pepper

green to yellow and finally red (hot). The peppers can be eaten plain or made into hot pepper sauce.
"I used to have some three years ago and they are not for eating. You can only use them as a hot sauce. They are too hot! Put in a shaker bottle with white vinegar and shake over greens," according to Dan Church, Martinez.
Horticultural Specialist W. L. Corley, Georgia Experiment Station, checked the world collection of peppers for ornamental use and found two rooster peppers.
One plant is called the rooster spur. It is a low, spreading plant with small elongate-conical pods. It is an excellent bedding plant and potted specimen.
The other rooster pepper is called cockscomb and is slightly larger. It too is an excellent bedding plant but is somewhat leggy as a potted specimen.
Although most seed houses do not sell rooster pepper seed, occasionally it is advertised in the MARKET BULLETIN.
Seed Quality Looks Good
For Soybeans/Peanuts
Foundation soybean seed quality should be good this year according to the Georgia Seed Development Commission. The Commission reported all nine varieties harvested without any rain on the seed during the harvesting season.
High quality foundation peanut seeds should be in good supply also for the 1979 planting according to officials. Most of this seed was also harvested without rain during the harvesting season.
Correction
The November 29 edition of the MARKET BULLETIN incorrectly stated that the pecan industry in Georgia generates more than $25 million in revenues for the state each year. The correct figure is near $55 million.

Grandpa's
Garden
Although Christmas poinsettias do not need much special attention now, the time is coming when you will have to show them special care. For the time being, they will bloom if watered daily with lukewarm water. Keep the plants away from drafts and in a sunny window if possible.
When the blooms start to fade, cut back on watering to give the plants rest. Some leaves will drop but this is natural. When the leaves start to drop, trim the plants back to approximately six inches above the soil line.
Water sparingly and soon new shoots will appear. It is a good idea at this time to replant the poinsettia because more than likely the plant is rootbound from the previous year's growth.
Feed the repotted poinsettia once a month with a balanced plant food but you will probably need to cut the plant back again to the six inch level in mid-summer.
Next October you need to start a daily ritual if the plant is to bloom around Christmas. The plant needs 14 hours of complete darkness every night. Put it in a closet, put a cardboard box over it - whatever is necessary to give it complete darkness for the required length of time. Watch for the blooms to set and when the color begins to show, bring your poinsettia out of hiding for holiday enjoyment.

Georgia Land
Fourteen percent of Georgia's land is in grass, 17 percent in crops and 34 percent in woods, according to College of Agriculture researchers. That leaves 35 percent for roads, suburbs, wasteland and miscellaneous uses.
Pork Fat?
Many people think all pork contains a lot of fat. This is not true, according to USDA meat specialists. They say some pork cuts are lower in fat than either beef or lamb.
Fire Won't Burn
When the fireplace fire dies or burns poorly, there may be a lack of combustion air because the house is sealed too tightly. Open a window. If the fire revives, this pinpoints the trouble as a lack of air.
