Special Efforts
By Ag Students
The International Agricultural Students Association of America (IASAA) is a youth organization for agricultural students all over the world. IASAA seeks to encourage the interchange of ideas in all fields of agricultural education and the practical application of agriculture.
As a further goal it seeks a mutual understanding and cooperation among agricultural students all over the world. It promotes a common interest in making it easier to solve the agricultural problems we will meet in the future.
IASAA is composed of member colleges of agriculture from the United States and Canada and is an arm of the International Association of Agricultural Students which serves in European, South American, East Asian and African countries.
At the national conference in August, I represented the University of Georgia and was elected vice-president of the national organization.

The theme of this year's conference in Missouri was "Feeding the World". During the week we heard seminars on "Population Growth in the Developing Nations of the World", "Policies and Politics of International Trade", and more.
The 86 delegates from 16 universities in the U.S. and Canada toured the Kansas City Board of Trade, Farmland Industries, Allis Chalmers, Ralston Purina Research Farm, and Monsanto Company while in Missouri.
In February 1978, Georgia hosted the IASAA regional conference. Seven southeastern colleges and universities attended the weekend meeting in which former Secretary of State Dean Rusk was the keynote speaker.
Next year's conference will be held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, August 12-17, with a conference theme of "Conflicts in Land Use". Through continued efforts in the Association, hopefully many of the problems facing the agriculture profession will be diminished in scope.

lion in revenues for the state each year.

By finding out how many cattle and calves are in Georgia, our poultry population, the number of hogs
and expected farrowings in early '79, and the number of acres farmers put in wheat this fall, statisticians can predict trends which will influence agriculture's future.

Estimates will be based on survey results from mail questionnaires as well as telephone and personal interviews with farmers and ranchers. Reports on hogs and wheat will be released December 21. The pomegranate is referred to many times in the Bible. It was a valuable fruit in the arid climate of the mid-east because its seedy center was full of juice.
Pomegranate literally translated means 'apple with grains!
The pomegranate was widely used in decorations in Biblical days. Temples were embellished with pomegranates, pillars were carved with the fruit and pictures of the fruit and flower were embroidered on the robes of high priests.
Throughout the land, pomegranate trees grew and their flowers and fruit were well known. "And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron ... "I Samuel 14:2.
Pomegranates are the source of a syrup made from its seeds known as grenadine. The first sherbert supposedly was made from pomegranate juice mixed with snow. And, in olden times, apothecaries used the blossoms to make a medicinal concoction to treat dysentery.
The pomegranates of thousands of years ago are just like the pomegranates we know today although improved varieties have been developed which are more dependable. The small tree is usually no more than ten to twelve feet high. It produces shiny green foliage which remains on the tree in milder climates throughout the year.
In Georgia, pomegranates can be successfully grown as they adapt to a variety of soils and enjoy our relatively mild climate even though the tree can survive at temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees.

Livestock and birds often feed around pecan trees contaminating the husks and shells which also provide a medium for molds and other microorganisms. Commercial processing cleans away these impurities in the initial stages and softens the meats so that they come out of the shelling phase intact instead of broken into
pieces. Water and chlorine are used to
strip away molds and bacteria and soften the meats. Present PDA regulations also require that sufficient heat be applied in the conditioning treatment to destroy any coli bacteria that may be present.
The sanitized or conditioned pecans then advance to the cracking, shelling, grading and sizing machines. There, batteries of mechanical machines divide the shelled meats into the various grades and sizes to be packaged for sale.
The tender crunchy texture and appetizing flavor have caused Georgia pecans to become highly popular as a food ingredient. Through care-

There is no easy way to shell walnuts. However, here are a few hints which may be helpful in attacking the task.
The greenish-black outer husk must first be removed. The easiest way to do this is to pour the nuts on the ground and drive over them with a car until the husks are knocked off. You can do it in the driveway but the husks will stain the concrete.
Gather the husked walnuts into a tub and cover with water. Stir the nuts around with a hoe and change the water. Do this two or three times over several days. The bad nuts (those with dried nut meat) will float to the surface and can be removed.
Now put all the clean walnuts in a burlap bag and hang on a sunny outside wall to drain and dry. This will take about a week.
Crack the walnut shells with a hammer and place the cracked walnut shells in a paper bag. The next day the nut meats will have shrunk enough to fall out of the shells. Shake the bag good and pick out the nut meats.
