Drought Hurt
Soybean Future
Two years of intense drought and heat have really hurt Georgia's soybean potential. The 1978 drought was 1,750,000 acres worse than the 1977 drought. On August 1st, of 1978, it appeared that prospects would bring in 250 million dollars for Georgia's soybean growers. But dry and hot months of August and September really scaled down the actual harvest and income.
How will this affect the future of soybeans in our state? The crop is
a good one for Georgia and has few to no alternatives for much of the state's cultivated acreage. The potential for bean production is still good with moderate weather conditions. The markets are there and continue to grow each year irrespective of increased production in South America. Prices for soybeans have been at or near parity for the past several years which cannot be said for other

general crops. The principal reason for this fact is increased usage and utilization. This hasn't just happened by chance. Market development programs in 72 countries by the American Soybean Association are increasingly creating the demand for more and more beans.
The 1979 budget for this work is approximately 8 million dollars with U.S. growers furnishing two and one half million dollars of these funds. The balance is furnished by the Foreign Agricultural Service and third party cooperators in the countries where market development is carried on.
Approximately 40 percent of the Georgia check off funds are used in helping fund these programs overseas. The remainder of the check off funds are funding research and extension programs in Georgia. A thorough examination of these programs in our state will give any grower confidence that we have as good a soybean program as any state in the

During this Thanksgiving season, I urge all Georgians to make this holiday not only
a day of rest from their labors but also a day for '* thought and re flection. Let us be thankful for the
strength to work, the minds to plan and for hearts to appreciate the good things of life.

Holiday Season Incomplete

Without Turkey To Gobble

Georgia is very well known for its outstanding achievements in the area of
poultry production, but it usually requires the Thanksgiving season to remember the chicken's big cousin, the turkey. Preliminary figures released
by the Georgia Crop Reporting Service indicate that over 1,861,000 of the big birds will have been produced in the state by year's end.

In comparison to other turkeyproducing states, Georgia is underdeveloped regarding this holiday delicacy. Minnesota leads the nation in production with over 22 million turkeys, and California and North Carolina are second and third with 17 million and 16 million respectively.
Nevertheless, the Georgia turkey producers play a big role in making the holiday season complete. There

Turkey production hi Georgia used to be basically a seasonal business. However, new trends hi meat production such as "turkey hams", etc., have increased demands for this holiday delicacy.

Market Cannery
Too Expensive;
Must Be Closed
The public cannery at the Atlanta State Farmers Market will be closed permanently. The move is one of several steps being taken to cut expenses and increase revenues on the Market.
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin said the cannery was operated this summer at a cost of $34,905, with an income of only $6,460. He said the equipment will be sold and the building will be leased as soon as possible.
In another economy move to put the Market on a self-sustaining basis, a new lighting system has been installed and sheds rewired to include metering electricity to small dealers who operate power equipment. Georgia Power has projected that the new lighting and metering network will pay for itself in 2.7 years and save approximately $36,000 a year in electrical costs.
Since its construction some 20 years ago, the Atlanta Farmers Market has been operated under a state authority concept. It is now the intent of the Legislature to retire the remaining bonded indebtedness on the market and operate the facility on a line item budget basis as are other state agencies and facilities.
"We realize that closing the can-

THE MARKET BULLETIN
rowftwoffWffffi^^

Wednesday, November 22, 1978

Mft&lMJMMflMi^^

Dear Editor: As a taxpayer I have always felt that the MARKET
BULLETIN was a very good investment concerning
our tax money. It has not only helped the farmer but
Georgians throughout the state. I do not consider "dogs" as something that should
be advertised as free concerning the taxpayer money. The head of the advertisement reads "Stock Dogs for Sale", but in reality these registered and purebred dogs possibly are not any more a stock dog than a "Heinz 57" or just a plain mongrel, depending on their
training. In this day and time, it is impossible to compare the definition of "stock dog" as in the past and
the! ruses. Most people who live on farms are more concerned
with owning a dog rather than a purebred dog. The advertisements shown in the BULLETIN show things
that breeders cannot tell when it is a little puppy nor how it will turn out, whether for stock or security or if
it will be any good at all. I ask that you discontinue advertising stockdogs for
sale in the MARKET BULLETIN.
B.J.Holland 927 Billy Me Gee Road
Lawrenceville, Georgia 30245 [Editor's note: The decision to advertise stockdogs in the
MARKET BULLETIN was made after many farmers wrote us and explained how they used stock dogs more than
ever in their farming operations due to increased labor costs and limited availability of farm labor.
We advertise only those dogs which are working farm
dogs. Advertisers must include breeding and/or special
training or ability which qualifies the dog as a stock dog.]

People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints oi people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

MEASURING WOOD
Wood volume measurements are confusing, says Extension Service Forester Ted Walker. He explains that the standard cord is the accepted unit for measuring wood. A cord is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, and a typical stack is 4 feet high and 8 feet wide, with the sticks 4 feet in length. But most fuel wood is not cut 4 feet in length; so se-

Some of the oldest plants known to man are those which are recorded in the Old and New Testament of the Bi ble. Biblical verses refer to trees, food, herbs and flowers which were widely used when the scriptures were written.
Although many names of plants are different today, in most cases a ge neral description of the plant and its uses are available which leads to a rather accurate identification of the plant according to today's standards.
The legend of plants as well as their origin not only provides a history lesson but makes the plant more uni que and special. Plants such as nar cissus, dandelion, cucumber, castor bean and willow were of special im portance during Biblical days. Their value in the home and temple were unique to their time but can help us understand the nature and character istics of the plant today.
In the following weeks, a plant of the Bible will be featured in this co lumn along with information about growing the specimen in Georgia.

THE MARKET BULLETIN
eg consumer line

I'm having problems with larvae-like bugs in the flour I buy. This has happened several times within the last few months.
P. R. Decatur Well, we called to get the brand and code information from you and will be checking in the grocery store to see if the problem originated there. Meanwhile, we have mailed you a brochure on pantry pest control. Once the insects infest your cabinets, they ar*e*di*ff*icult to remove.
Can you give me some information on ridding my Chinese chestnuts of these worms?
F. R. Dalton They are chestnut weevils for which no control measures are available at present, although the experiment st*a*tio*n*s are working in this area.
Say it isn't true! A friend told me that her sister told her that her uncle had heard his brother-in-law say that there are earthworms in my favorite fast food hamburger. Please say it isn't so!
D.A.P. Atlanta It isn't so, it isn't true. Ronald would sure like to know how this rumor got started. We can find no basis for it whatsoever. In the first place, in many parts of the world earthworms are considered a delicacy and sell for about $12 a pound. They are rich in protein too. But, there are no worms in any hamburger meat that we know of in the state of Georgia. We promise. ****
I do not like chili with beans and try not to buy it. Last night I got home with some chili without beans for supper. But, when I opened it, the can was full of beans.
A.J. Columbus Thanks for including all the necessary information. An inspector has checked several cans from that lot and found an apparent error in labeling during processing. The product was removed from sale and we appreciate you letting us know about the probl*em* .* *
How much ground meat should I get from a hindquarter? S. H.
Fort Stewart That depends on the original weight of the carcass. Based on an initial weight of 1,000 pounds, a hindquarter would total around 138 pounds, of which 84 pounds would be usable and 54 pounds would be waste. The cuts you receive depend on the agreement made between you and the butcher.
****
I have sampled three sausages and made a comparison. The labels are enclosed. One does not seem to be pure pork. Can this be checked?
R. H. Nicholson You are right, the sausage is not pure pork. We got the information from the label. All additives are listed on the package. If you prefer one brand over another, you should buy that product.

Soybean Future
(Continued From Page 1)
South and better than most. The basic idea of American
Soybean Association's market development program is one of creating demand and not the actual selling of beans. If the demand is there, the product will move to fill the need. The results of twenty-two years of this work are the ever increasing acreage and production that finds a good market.
Our personnel in offices around the world are real specialists in teaching and promoting soy usage whether it is in feeding animals or use in human nutrition. Many of them are skilled in public relations and the ability to deal with governments that are directly involved in purchases and imports.
With a little luck and some favorable weather, we still believe that soybeans can be the number one crop in the state.

Duck Hunters Must Have
License & Hunting stamp
The 1978-79 duck hunting season in Georgia will be from November 22, through December 2, 1978, and from December 13, 1978 through January 20, 1979. Shooting hours are one half hour before sunrise to sunset, daily.
Bag limit on all ducks will be five daily with a possession limit of ten. Exceptions to the rule are woodducks, (two daily and four in possession), black ducks, (one daily and two in possession), and either one canvasback or redhead daily or in possession.
In addition to the required state hunting licenses, all hunters sixteen years of age or older are required to possess a valid Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp if they plan to hunt ducks. These stamps are available at most U.S. Post Offices.

Grandpa's
Garden
To grow a winter herb garden, plant herb seeds in shallow pans placed near a south or east window. When the plants are a couple of inches tall, transplant into individual pots. The best herbs to grow indoors include rosemary, chives, parsley, dill, sage and lavendar.
Although herbs usually do not need much fertilizer, a mild cow manure tea will produce excellent results. To make the 'tea', fill a coffee can with dried cow manure. Pour a cup of water through the manure and collect the water as it seeps through holes in the bottom of the coffee can. Use about one tablespoon per plant per month.
Although Sue Morris of Bibb County thinks saving seed from one garden to the next is a good idea, she uses her surplus seed to feed birds in winter.
DMR Bans Open Fires
A ban on all open fires has been ordered on all sites operated by the Parks and Historic Sites Division of the Department of Natural Resources. The ban went into effect November 4 and will continue indefinitely ... at least until a period of substantial, prolonged rain.
