The Georgia Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers is a professional organization of trained men devoted to the management of farms and the appraisal of rural real estate.
The purpose and objectives of the organization are to develop the
professional members by establishing sound standards, principals, and procedures for farm management and rural appraisal and to encourage members to abide by these standards. Periodic meetings offer members the opportunity to learn from recognized authorities and from each

other, as well as to update knowledge of unique and progressive farming operations.
Presentations on subjects ranging from tax law to grape culture form the program for a winter meeting held annually in mid-January in Ma con, Georgia. A summer meeting is usually held in one of Georgia's diverse agricultural areas, where farm visits give members firsthand opportunities to update their professional skills.
The Georgia Society was organized on July 1, 1959, at the Southeast Georgia Branch Experiment Station in Midville. During its first year of operation, membership totaled 29. This year, when the Society became an official chapter of the American Society, Georgia's 106 members became a part of the national membership, numbering about 2,000.
Major categories of membership include: (1) professional members who are actively engaged in farm appraisal or farm management; (2) academic members who devote a major portion of their time to the teaching, research, or extension, of professional farm management and/or rural appraising at the un-

For Antifreeze Protection
With the cold weather moving in, motorists across Georgia will again be adding antifreeze to their automobiles for protection through the winter. This year marks the third consecutive year requiring registration of all antifreeze brands in the state with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The following brands have been approved by the Department as of October 13:
soybean yields is 6.0 to 6.5. Soils with 5.5 to 6.0 pH are considered marginal, and those with pH less than 5.5 are considered to be in critical need of lime.
According to Dr. Earl Elsner, Extension soybean agronomist and member of the survey team, as much as 35 percent of the fields in one portion of the state are showing critical limestone needs.
If lime is needed, it should be applied in the fall and mixed into the soil so that it will have time to react

Begins In Compost Heap
The fall season is obviously not the time of year to plant a garden, but it is the right time to begin preparing a very important material to be used the following year in the garden and elsewhere around the yard compost.
Peat moss, manure, well rotted sawdust or decomposed grass clippings and leaves all make great organic materials to use. These substances improve soil aeration and drainage, replace lost nutrients and increase the water holding capacity of the soil.
However, when actually needed, these organic materials are not always so readily available or economically feasible to buy. With a little
pre-planning, organic matter or compost may be easily and cheaply produced and stored until needed. One simple method is a compost bin.
Several types of bins are commercially available through plant nurseries and hardware stores, but with a little time and energy, one can also be built.
The bin should be four to five feet high and four to five feet wide. It should be constructed of galvanized hardware cloth (wire), attached to four treated wood or metal posts. One side should be removable and may be constructed of exterior plywood or masonite set in two grooved corner posts.
U^~i-
Once the bin is constructed, the first layer of the pile should be made of organic leftovers such as dead leaves or grass cuppings piled about twelve inches deep. Grinding this matter prior to putting it in the bin will greatly reduce the time required for composting.
Next, one cup of 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 fertilizer should be sprinkled over the pile and watered thoroughly. Add an inch of soil over the organic matter and fertilize again. This process is repeated for each additional

with the soil before soybean planting season. No lime should be added without a soil test, as it is possible to add too much and cause more harm than good.
Once the lime has been applied, it normally takes approximately six months for the reaction to take place. Dolomitic limestone should be used since it also supplies needed magnesium and calcium.
To determine the pH level of a soil, a soil sample should be taken from random locations within the field and sent to the Soil Test and Plant Analysis Laboratory located in Athens. This service made available through the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service is free to all Georgia residents.
A soil sample bag may be obtained at the Extension Agent's office located in each county. The time spent obtaining a sample now may be the most valuable time spent for the 1979 soybean season.

Horses,
mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. Hie MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

Agricultural
seed and plants
for sale
- All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

Gloxinias are one of the most popular pot plants for gift-giving. They are beautiful, available and relatively inexpensive.
Gloxinias are members of the African violet family better known as Gesneriads. The plants have velvety leaves and blooms and the colors are some of the most intense violets and reds known in the plant world.
These plants are native to Brazil. In their natural habitat they grow in humid jungle conditions with heavy rainfall. However, they also experience a dry season which needs to be duplicated for them as houseplants.
While the gloxinias are growing, they thrive in bright light and even moisture. Don't let them get soaked and then dry out. They like a constant humidity.
After gloxinias bloom, either dig up the tubers and store them for a few months or put the whole pot and tuber in a dark area for one to three months. Gloxinias will let you know when they are ready to start growing again by sending up short fuzzy leaves. When this occurs, bring the plant out into the light and provide adequate moisture.
If you want to try your hand at propagating gloxinias, you can do so either by seed or leaf cutting. For a leaf propagation, cut a healthy leaf and dip in rooting powder. Insert in shallow soil mixture. Water the cutting from the bottom so that the plant can take in water as needed. Tubers will form in about six months.
Grandpa's
Garden
One of the best ways to keep birds out of your fruit trees, according to J. B. Young, Albany, is to paint white spots on an old garden hose. Hang the hose in the tree and birds will think there is a snake in the tree.
One of the easiest plants to grow is a sweet potato vine. Suspend a sweet potato half in and half out of water. Within a week little sprouts start appearing and within a month a beautiful lush green vine will decorate your kitchen window. (P.S. This is a great indoor children's project for winter.)
When your collards are ready to pick, remember to let the first six to eight leaves develop to full size to sustain the plant. Never harvest the central growing plant if you want it to keep producing. The flavor of collards is greatly improved by frost and mature plants can withstand freezing temperatures. If continuous sub-freezing temperature persist, protect the plants with straw.
You can leave turnips in the ground until the ground begins to freeze solid. The greens are the most tender when no larger than the size of your hand.

seeds of the plant as good luck charms. Yes, the mature seeds, sprouts and young leaves are poisonous.
Last week in the grocery store, I noticed some packaged sausage meat that had an expired date. Why was it still being sold?
R.V. Thompson The date on the sausage was a suggested sale date provided voluntarily by the packing company and not an expiration date. According to the regulations now in effect and enforced by the Department of Agriculture, the food is inspected for wholesomeness. However, our inspectors have no authority by law to pull these products from the shelf unless there is some
doubt as to the safety of the produc*t. * * *
Readers: Ag Consumer Line is always glad to refer you to the right office for your
questions and complaints if we cannot offer direct assistance. In the past few weeks we have received several questions regarding problems with private water sources. Your best bet is to contact your local health department. If the situation invokes a public water supply, you should notify the: Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Compost Heap

layer until the bin is filled. The pile should be watered daily
to encourage micro-organism growth, but don't overdo it. If the pile stays too wet, the decomposition process slows down considerably.
Three to four weeks after the pile has been started, it should be turned. This mixes the slower decomposing material on the outside with the swifter working material on the inside to even up the decomposition.
Composting is a fairly slow process, but if started this fall, the pile should be ready for shrubs, flower and vegetable garden use by the next spring.
A swifter method which can be used to produce organic matter during the summer months will deliver an amazing facsimile of cow manure with all of the nutrients normally extracted by the cow's digestive system.
Decomposition time with this method takes approximately one month in the hot summer sun and has excellent possibilities as a good use for kudzu which has been overwhelming the state since its importation to the U.S. in 1876.
Large plastic garbage bags are the secret. Dump torn-up weeds, grass clippings, shredded leaves, chopped kudzu vines or any other naturally juicy waste vegetation into the bag and add water if necessary to dampen the mass.
Tie the bag loosely, not tightly, shut. If tied tightly, the decomposing materials will cause methane gas to build up inside the bag until it expands and bursts. Set the bag out where it mav receive direct sunlight and let nature do the rest.
The combination of moisture from either the natural juices or added water plus the heat from the sun that the blact bags soak up and the absence of fresh air inside the bags hasten the decomposition. In thirty to thirty-five days, open the bag, spread the results on your garden and watch it grow!

The FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN will again provide its readers with a "Pick Your Own" list. The MARKET BULLETIN office has recently received many requests for the locations of persons with "Pick Your Own" sweet potatoes, apples, pears, pecans and Christmas trees.
There may be many farmers with even a small garden, orchard or stand of these produce items who would like very much to tap this ready and waiting market for sales. If you do, let us know.
All lists of "Pick Your Own" locations will be published in the November 15 edition. In order to be included, all lists must be in the MARKET BULLETIN office by 12:00 noon, November 8.
If you have produce available, please contact the MARKET BULLETIN office by writing "Pick Your Own", FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN, Capitol Square, Atlanta, 30334.
Health Factor Stressed
At Douglas Hog Event
The 1979 National Winter Hampshire Type Conference will be held at the Ag Arena in Douglas, on January 4,5, and 6 and is expected to attract breeders and commercial pork producers from all parts of the country.
