Brahman Cattle
Popular Stock
A group of cattle producers met on August 7, 1976, to organize the Georgia Brahman Breeders Association. The purpose of the Georgia Association was to promote Brahman cattle in Georgia through advertising, field days, shows and sales.
Anyone interested in breeding or cross-breeding Brahman cattle is eli-
- gible for membership in the association. However, officers and directors must be bona fide purebred Brahman breeders. Our organization has been officially recognized and affiliated by
the American Brahman Breeders Association.
(Our guest columnist this week is L. M. Tucker, President, Georgia Brahman Breed
ers Association, Route 5, Box 221, Tifton
31794.)____________________
Future plans for promotion include a regular advertising program, a bull and heifer sale in November 1978, and an exhibit of Brahman cattle at the state fair in Macon.
In 1979, the Georgia association, along with the American Brahman Breeders Association, plans to sponsor the first sanctioned purebred Brahman show ever to be held in the state of Georgia. This will be a showcase of the best Brahman cattle available.
The popularity and expansion of the Brahman breed has seen new registered herds appear throughout Georgia. Ten years ago there were three purebred Brahman breeders in the state of Georgia. Today, there are more than thirty breeders.
More and more people have realized that if you are involved in cattle, you need some Brahman influence. The Brangus, Braford, Simbrah, Bramental, Beefmaster, Bramaine, Brahmousin, Charbray, Santa Gertrudis and others have a percentage
of Brahman blood. Brahman is crossbreeding's common denominator.
In all likelihood a neighbor or someone in your general locale can supply your Brahman needs. Our association has a list of breeders available on request.

Farmers Eligible For
Drought Relief Loans
All of Georgia's 159 counties have been declared drought disaster areas by the Farmers Home Administration. Under the provisions of the disaster relief program, farmers may apply for low interest federal emergency loans if they have suffered drought related production or physical losses.
The continued drought that has plagued Georgia since the first week of August has resulted in heavy crop losses for Georgia's farmers. Soybeans, pastures and peanuts are the hardest hit but other crops have also been severely affected by the continued dry weather.
Georgia farmers have until June, 1979, to_jipply for physical losses and until December, 1979, to make applications to offset production damage.

The first Southeastern No-Tillage Systems Conference will be hosted by the University of Georgia, Department of Agronomy at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin, on November 29.
No-tillage farming is an efficient method of crop production in which a new crop may be sown right into the stubble of a recently harvested crop, eliminating the time consuming process of replowing and developing the land.
In addition, the method has been found to be a worthwhile and effective method of crop production in most cases, while virtually eliminating soil erosion and conserving energy.
The conference is not expected to be highly technical in nature.
For more information, contact Joe T. Touchton, Georgia Experiment Station, Experiment, Georgia 30212, or phone 404/228-7272. A $3.00 fee is requested to cover lunch for those who wish to attend. Registration deadline November 1.

Of Continuous Crop Increases
Cash receipts from farm marketings and Government payments slipped 1 percent to $2.2 billion in 1977, according to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service. This slide broke a string of 24 years of continual increase and was a
direct result of the sharp decrease in income earned from the sale of crops.

Why are the ingredients listed on some items of food and not listed on others such as mayonnaise?

I want to sell some plants that I have rooted. Does a state inspector have to check them first?
R. V. Savannah
Cash receipts earned from the sale of livestock, poultry and pro-
ducts were up 6 percent, while Government payments were 423
percent above 1976, due to heavy
disaster relief payments following drought induced crop losses.
However, these increases were not enough to offset the 12 percent
drop in money earned from crop sales. Output of many crops was well below 1976 due to the severe drought during the summer of 1977.
Commercial broilers continued the reign begun in 1956 as the lead-
ing source of farm income in Georgia. Peanuts were the second most important money earner in 1977.
Sales of livestock, poultry and their products earned farmers

Dear Editor:
I have been trying for such a long time to locate a pattern for a quilt called Star of LeMoyne. I saw a picture of this pattern in a MARKET BULLETIN many years ago and have been trying to locate it ever since.
If anyone has this pattern I would certainly appreciate them notifying me so I may obtain one.

USE THE ASHES Ashes from fireplaces and wood-burning stoves can be used as a fertilizer supplement in the garden. Just remember that their value is limited. According to Cooperative Extension Service specialists, wood ashes usually contain about 45 percent calcium carbonate (a form of lime), 5 to 10 percent potash, and about 2 percent phosphorus.
Prevent Rust You can prevent rust from collecting on unused garden tools iy covering them with a thin coat of oil.

Lime-Fertilizer
Lime, which is used to correct soil acidity, is also a fertilizer, say Extension Service agronomists. It contains calcium and if dolomitic lime is used magnesium as well.
****
Speed It Up To speed up decomposition of any woody material that you add to the compost pile, shred it with a rotary mower first, suggest Extension Service horticulturists.
****
Water Early
Watering your garden and other plants in the morning will allow the foliage to dry before nightfall, and this cuts down on the risk of diseases, according to Cooperative Extension Service specialists.
Horses, mules, ponies
for sale
People who are buying and breeding horses should ask to see the registration papers before leaving premises. The MARKET BULLETIN has received numerous complaints of people who buy a horse with the seller promising to send papers later and the papers never appear. The MARKET BULLETIN has no jurisdiction over such instances. A smart buyer and or person breeding a mare will ask to see the papers first.
In order to qualify to advertise horses, horse farmers should have had the livestock advertised in their possession 60 days or more before offering it for sale through this publication.
All horses offered for advertisement through the Market Bulletin should have a negative coggin test within the past 60 days.

All agricultural seed must have a current germination report not more than 9 months old. All agricultural plants are required to be inspected to assure disease-free condition. All agricultural seed and plants must be produced by the individual advertiser and not purchased for resale.
Blueberry plants which are advertised as 1 to 2 year old plants are on the average 8 to 12 inches tall. Horticulturists advise us that it takes an average of 3 more years before the blueberry plant will produce enough blueberries to make a pie. There will be a few berries the first year on the small rooted cutting.

Can you tell me what the federal or state regulations concerning expiration dates on frozen foods require? Also, several times while eating out I have foreign materials in my food.
M. D. Trenton No expiration date is required on frozen foods. Some companies print the information voluntarily. Department sanitarians regularly inspect the frozen food sections for quality to assure you that the food you purchase is safe. Regarding the problems you are having with restaurants, we suggest you contact your local health department as the Department of Agriculture has no jurisidiction in this area.
Can you tell me what sodium erythorbate is? A rumor is circulating in our area that it is another name for ground earthworms.
B.T. Rome Sodium erythorbate is NOT the same as ground earthworms. It is a pickling agent used in meats, breads and other food products. If worms were in your bologna, the information would be on the label.

$1,238,830,000 in 1977 and accounted for 54.9 percent of the total. Crop sales returned $960,290,000, accounting for 42.8 percent of the total. Government payments, at $51,166,000, accounted for 2.3 percent of the total.
Production Expenses
Production expenses continued to spiral upward. The 1977 estimate for production expenses was $2.0. billion compared with $1.9 billion in 1976 or a rise of 4 percent.
Realized Net Farm Income
After deducting production expenses from gross farm income, Georgia farmers had a realized net income of $451.5 million in 1977. Income from a large liquidation of livestock numbers and grain stocks from 1976 production plus Government disaster relief payments helped maintain this level which averaged $6,450 per farm.
Cash/Production Value Ratio
Value of production is the amount produced times seasonal average price for that commodity. The value of cash farm receipts from that commodity during a calendar year is based on the amount sold times unit price during the calendar year.
Let us take corn as an example. A portion of 1976 corn production from storage was marketed by the farmers during 1977. That portion became part of the value of cash farm receipts for corn during calendar 1977.
The effect of a low production year will effect the cash farm receipts for the next year. In most "normal" years the value of produced corn far exceeds the value of cash farm receipts for corn because about 50 percent of the year's production is fed to livestock and poultry on farms where produced.
The cash farm receipts for livestock and poultry reflect the use of the corn. If the value of production for corn produced and fed to livestock and poultry was counted as cash farm receipts plus counting cash farm receipts from livestock and poultry marketed we would be double counting cash farm receipts.
Usually the cash farm receipts amount is less than the value of production for most crops. As pointed out earlier, only those commodities marketed for dollars during the calendar year are included for calculating cash farm receipts.
Those crops fed to livestock and poultry on farms where produced are not included for calculating cash farm receipts, but are included in value of production.

A mother and her baby chicks ..... an unusual name for a plant but it is so appropriate. The large rosette is surrounded by tiny baby plants which when separated and planted form their own 'family'.
Hens and chicks, houseleek, liveforever and old man and old woman are common names for sempervivums. They are low growing plants which are easy to grow in protected locations outside or in planters for the house. Failures in growing sempervivums usually result from one problem -- drowning. They will not tolerate soggy soil.
Hen and chicks and all other sempervivums are imports to this country. Many originated in the alps of Europe where the summers are cooler and shorter. During winter, they survive under a protective covering of snow.
Sempervivum means always (semper) and living (vivum), and ac cording to historical legend, sempervivums have lived through many cen turies and civilizations.
The Romans called it beard of Jupiter. European ruler, Charle magne, ordered every house roof planted with sempervivum as a deterent to fire, lightening and evil spirits. Many old cottages still have hen and chicks living in cracks of stone walls and on tile roofs.
There are many variations of sempervivums. Some are grey/ green, others are tinged with red, yellow, pink or purple, depending on the variety. The.most unusual variety is the arachnoideum -- a cob webby hen and chicks. [Continued in next week's MARKET BULLETIN]

Useful, Multi-Shaped Gourd
Survives the Ages Thru Man
The ever useful gourd has been associated with man since about 3,300 B. C. and is one of the oldest cultivated plants known to exist today. Gardeners and farmers through the ages have maintained an enduring passion for the fascinating plant which depends entirely on man for its survival since it has never been found in a truly wild state.
Gourds are easy to grow provided some attention is given to all phases of production. These plants have the same general growth pattern as pumpkins, squash and melons and should be given similar treatment.
Planting should be accomplished as soon as the soil warms up in early spring. Gourds perform best when grown on trellises similar to those used for grapes, and will continue to produce fruits until killed by frost in the fall.
A fertile loamy soil in full sunlight is best for growth with organic matter or compost added when necessary. The soil should be worked to a depth of eight to sixteen inches with rotted manure, fertilizer and lime mixed in to the full depth.
A good fertilization program consists of 1000 to 2000 pounds per acre of 5-10-10 prior to planting with lime applied to adjust the pH of the soil to 6.5. The soil should be analyzed to determine nutrient requirements as well as soil pH.
Gourds require a great deal of growing room. All types may be grown on trellises with a bamboo stake placed near the growing mound and tied to trellis wires to help train the plants upward.
Cultivation is necessary to keep down grass and weeds until the vines have become well established. Insects and diseases will also cause extensive damage and must be controlled with a spray or dust program. County agents may be consulted to ascertain the best possible program for individual areas.
Gourds grown in Georgia include the Cucurbita, Lagenaria (Martin), and Luffa. All gourds should be harvested by cutting the stem end at the

Georgia produces an abundance of gourds which may be put to a var-
iety of uses by a person with a little
imagination. Mr. W.S.B. North of
Fort Valley makes jack-o-lanterns, ladies pocketbooks and a variety of
other novelties out of his gourds.
vine with sharp clippers or shears. They should not be twisted or pulled from the vine as the stem enhances the decorative value.
Cucurbitas mature in August and should be harvested as soon as they become hard. Lagenarias may be left on the ground or trellis until late fall but should be harvested as soon as they turn brown and begin to lose weight. Luffas should be treated similarly.
All gourds should be handled as gently as one would eggs, in order to prevent the slightest bruises which may serve as an entrance for rot organisms. Clean containers with smooth inside surfaces should be used for transporting gourds from the field and to storage.
Man has used the gourd mainly for ornaments and various types of utensils such as waterjugs, dippers, spoons, ladles, salt and sugar containers and numerous other* adaptions such as bird houses.
The Luffa gourd has gained wide attention due to its large yellow fruits which are up to thirty inches in length, giving them a greater ornamental value. Also, the fibrous interior of the Luffa has been used in oil filters on diesel engines, upholstery, life preservers, hats, dish cloths, sandals and many other items.
One of the best methods of cleaning and curing gourds is to wash them in a strong solution of sulphonaphthol or any other nonbleaching disinfectant. A soft brush is ideal for removing dirt, dust and other foreign matter when washing.
After being cleaned thoroughly, the gourds should be placed in a cool, airy location in the absence of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause the gourds to lose their color.
When the gourds have dried completely, they may be waxed with a liquid floor wax or varnished and at this point are ready for use as decorations or any other purpose to which they might be suited.
Well cleaned and cured gourds generate a great deal of interest in their bright colors and varied shapes, and carry a heritage all their own, right back to the days before Christ.
